DuuDuu Quokka Mattress
Recommended ✅
$1,400 (Queen)
Launched in 2024, DuuDuu offers a small collection of bedding products that includes the superb DuuDuu Quokka Mattress. This impressive mattress takes a worthy position in our Top 12 list in 2025.
After initially only offering delivery to WA, the DuuDuu Quokka Mattress is now available Australia-wide, a big feat for a young online company. Delivery times and fees are very reasonable.
The top comfort layer of this mattress consists of a quilted cooling fabric that sits over a blend of foam layers and a layer of natural latex. This comfort layer offers a smooth and comfortable, medium-firm feel that should suit all sleeping positions.
This mattress uses a 3-zone, high coil count spring that feels strong and responsive. Based on the quality of this spring system, we would be confident in saying that it would accommodate people of all sizes.
One of the stand out features of the DuuDuu Quokka Mattress is its edge support. So impressive is this Guardian form edge system, we would go as far to say it is the mattress perimeter out of all the beds in a box we have tested. So, users will be able to use the full surface of the mattress, without the fear of rolling off the edge.
The DuuDuu Quokka Mattress is a beauty and an excellent all round mattress. It comes with a 100 night trial period (conditions apply) and a 10 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship.
When buying a mattress in a box online, it’s important to be aware of the details of this type of purchase.
Here is some handy information to keep in mind!
What is a mattress in a box?
A mattress in a box is simply a mattress that has been compressed by heavy machinery to fit (rolled or folded) into a box.
This compression method makes storage and transport more economical, and it may also make it easier to place the mattress into your home.
These products can be conveniently ordered online and will be delivered to your door, often within days. Once you unpack your mattress, it will decompress to become just like any other mattress.
Keep in mind that there will be a substantial amount of packaging (cardboard and plastic wrapping) to dispose of. So, you will need to do some forward planning in terms of bin space.
Are they any good?
The short answer to this question is yes, and no.
There is a huge range of quality in the mattress in a box market – good and bad. Whether you’re looking in a retail store or online, there is inevitably going to be some great products, and some not so great products.
For example, let’s compare the And Sleep Prime and the Kmart Bonnell Spring Mattress.
Both of these are beds in a box, but there is a significant difference in quality, comfort, support, and price.
The And Sleep Prime has premium quality comfort layers and a sophisticated spring system that offers high levels of comfort and responsiveness.
The Kmart Mattress uses cheap materials and a flimsy spring system and will likely not provide adequate comfort for regular use.
So, rather than generalising mattresses in a box (being good or not), we encourage each person to find a mattress that suits your needs and preferences, regardless of the product type.
Why are they so popular?
Mattress in a box products and have significantly changed the way that Australians shop for mattresses. This concept has become so popular in Australia that there is now a mind-boggling number of options.
Check out how many brands and companies offer these products today!
There is no secret as to why the mattress in a box craze has exploded in Australia. They’re affordable, delivery is usually free, and some companies even offer ‘same day delivery’. This is a far cry from a common 6-8 week wait when you order from a retail store.
Another major reason why this method of mattress buying has become so popular is the ‘free trial period’. This means that if you are not satisfied with your mattress, you can return it for a refund.
Price
The average price of a mattress in a box in Australia is around $1,100 (queen size). This is far less than the average price of a retail store mattress which sits up around the $3,000 mark.
As you can see from our list above, there is some variation in pricing which is not surprising when you consider the vast number of options available.
We have assigned our award-winners above with category titles (e.g. Best Comfort) to help with your decision. We always encourage shoppers to choose a mattress that considers your needs and preferences, rather than on price alone.
Trial periods
As we mentioned earlier, the vast majority of mattresses in a box in Australia come with a ‘free trial period’. This means that you can return the mattress for a full refund if you aren’t satisfied.
Free trial periods give customers the ultimate peace of mind, knowing that you won’t be stuck with a mattress that you don’t like.
Buying a mattress online has become a normal and popular method of bed shopping in Australia.
A typical trial period for a bed in a box is 100 nights (just over 3 months) but there are conditions that apply to trial periods.
For example, the mattress must be in pristine condition to be eligible for a return and refund. Customers in rural locations may also be responsible for delivery of the mattress to a local charity location.
So, make sure that you are clear on trial period conditions before you buy. You can do this by checking the FAQ (frequently asked questions) section of the respective company. Or, you can contact the company directly with any questions.
Foam vs. innerspring
There is a popular belief that all mattresses in a box are foam mattresses. This is certainly not true, as the majority of beds in a box sold in Australia are actually innerspring mattresses (around 54%).
As you might expect, there are plenty of foam options too (43%) and a small number of latex mattresses (3%).
How long does it take to decompress?
Once you have removed all of the packaging, you will notice that your mattress will quickly expand and gradually regain its normal shape.
In some cases, the mattress can pop out quickly of the packaging, so care should be taken during this unpacking process. We always recommend two people be on hand to unpack a mattress in a box.
Once you have removed all of the packaging, we generally recommend leaving the mattress for 24-48 hours before sleeping on it. With that said, most beds in a box will be ready to sleep on after just a few hours of decompression.
Warranties
Almost all mattress in a box products come with a warranty that should cover any major defects. A typical length of warranty for a mattress in a box is 10 years, but understandably this will vary.
It’s worth noting that some warranties will only cover indentations (body impressions) beyond a certain depth measurement (e.g. 30mm). Furthermore, some warranties don’t cover mattresses when they are used with an unsupportive bed base (such as a bed base with flexible slats).
Make sure you check to see exactly what each warranty covers. This information is often located at the bottom of the website, or in the FAQ (frequently asked questions) section.
