As we mentioned at the start of this article, buying a new mattress is one of the most difficult and confusing purchases you will make. With so many stores and products to consider, it’s totally normal to be overwhelmed by choice.
A buyer’s guide in 2023
Below is a compact buyer’s guide for anyone looking to buy a new mattress in 2023. If you want to dive even deeper into this process, you can view our complete and comprehensive buyer’s guide.
How much should I spend?
Generally speaking, you can get a very good mattress for between $1,000 – $2,000 (queen size). As noted though, this is a general guide and getting the right mattress will depend on your individual situation, not just price.
As you might expect, there are also some excellent products in the $2,000 – $3,000 range, but our team does not believe you have to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to get a great mattress.
You can read more about pricing in our article linked here.
What bed size is best?
Deciding on the size of your bed (and mattress) is a critical part of the buying process. It is important that you measure your bedroom to ensure that the bed size you desire fits nicely into the space.
Australian bed (mattress) sizes in 2023
There are certainly advantages to sleeping on a large bed (e.g. king size) but again, this must be considered in context of bedroom space as well as access space (doors and stairs).
Most mattresses are available in queen and king sizes, with many also available in single, king single, and doubles sizes. Long single and super king options are far less common.
You can read more about Australian bed (mattress) sizes here.
Room size vs bed size
Below is a list of room size recommendations for each bed size.
Please note that these are general recommendations and choosing a bed size (based on room size) will depend on your personal situation and personal preference.
BED SIZE | ROOM SIZE |
Single | 2.5m x 3.0m |
Long Single | 2.6m x 3.2m |
King Single | 2.6m x 3.2m |
Double | 3.2m x 3.4m |
Queen | 3.0m x 4.0m |
King | 3.2m x 4.2m |
Super King | 3.5m x 4.5m |
Room size recommendations will also depend on additional furniture (bedside tables, benches, chairs, sofas etc) that you wish to include in your bedroom.
The configuration of the bedroom in terms of wardrobes and windows will also influence what bed size is suitable.
Should I buy in-store or online?
Buying a mattress in-store involves you walking into a store, deciding on your mattress, and making your purchase. It is the traditional method of shopping that we are all familiar with.
Buying online means that you can purchase from the comfort of your own home. Although you may not be able to try the mattress before you buy, this method comes with several important benefits.
Firstly, many online mattresses offer incredible value when compared with retail store mattresses. This is possible as online companies don’t have the overhead costs that traditional retail stores do.
Many online mattresses offer incredible value when compared with retail store mattresses.
Additionally when you buy online, the mattress typically comes with a trial period (e.g. 100 nights). This means that you can return the product for a refund if you are not satisfied.
You can read more about the pros and cons of each purchasing method in our article linked here.
What type of mattress should I go for?
There are 3 main types of mattresses on the market today. These are:
- Innerspring mattresses
- Foam mattresses
- Latex mattresses
Innerspring mattresses contain a network of metal coils (springs) as the main structure of the mattress. These are the most common type of mattress on the market, and are often more supportive and durable than foam or latex mattresses.
As the name suggests, foam mattresses are made entirely of foam components. Foam products typically have a dense, spongy feel, and may have less partner disturbance than some innerspring mattresses.
Latex mattresses are made predominantly from latex – a naturally occurring substance that is often used in bedding products. Latex has a characteristic bouncy feel, and is used in bedding products quite often.
To read about the pros and cons of each main mattress type, you can jump to our article linked here.
What firmness is best?
Deciding on the correct mattress firmness is specific to each individual. With this in mind, we are cautious about applying general guidelines when recommending firmness levels.
Many people have a sense of what firmness they prefer (e.g. firm or soft), but firmness recommendations often relate to sleeping position/s.
For example, a side sleeper may be better suited to a softer mattress, whereas back sleepers often prefer a firmer mattress. We have found though that a ‘medium’ or ‘medium-firm’ feel are popular firmness options, as they provide a nice balance of comfort and support.
To read more about firmness levels, jump to section 7 in our Complete Buyer’s Guide in 2023.
What about a bed base?
If you’re looking to buy a new mattress, you may also need a new bed base. Your bed base is a very important part of your bed system, so this must also be considered carefully.
Sleep Republic Mattress on the Sleep Republic Pro Base
There are several different types of bed bases (e.g. ensemble base, bed frame, adjustable base) but we almost always recommend that the slats on the bed base are ‘rigid’ (not flexible).
Rigid slats provide a much stronger foundation for your mattress and should increase the performance and longevity of your product. It’s worth noting also that flexible slats (also called posture slats) will often void the mattress warranty.
Is my new mattress non-toxic?
It is quite normal for new products (e.g. furniture, clothing, carpet) to have a ‘new smell’. Some people may be sensitive to these odours, in which case we would recommend airing them out (e.g. opening windows) to release the new product smell.
Many mattresses today possess non-toxic certifications. These certifications indicate that the product has undergone independent testing for harmful chemicals, and has been deemed safe for human use.
Similarly, many mattresses hold eco-friendly certifications. These reflect that the product has been assessed and certified for its minimal environmental impact.
You can read more about the major mattress certifications in our article linked here.
Delivery times and costs
Delivery times will vary greatly depending on the product you buy, your location, and stock availability.
Some online companies (e.g. Koala) offer an impressive same-day delivery, whereas retail store mattresses may take 4-6 weeks to arrive.
If you buy online, delivery is often free of charge, whereas retail stores have a typical delivery fee of $100.
Finance options
A new bed is a considerable expense and is not something that is budgeted for.
If you are not in a position to buy a new bed in full, most bedding companies offer finance options to help you manage the cost of your purchase.
Some of the popular finance options offered by bedding retailers include Afterpay, Zip, and Humm. Here is our summary of the major interest free payment options available in Australia. Be sure to check with the relevant company to see what finance options they offer.
As always, we recommend that you use finance sensibly. Please check the terms and conditions before you use a finance service.
Warranties
Almost all mattresses will come with a warranty that should cover faulty workmanship or materials. A typical length of a warranty for a mattress over $1,000 (queen size) is 10 years.
As we mentioned earlier, many warranties will require a certain type of bed base (e.g. with rigid slats) for the warranty to be valid, so make sure you check the details of the warranty before buying.
It’s worth noting that warranties won’t usually cover you if you decide on an unsuitable product (e.g. too firm or too soft). This emphasises the importance of taking your time when when making your selection in-store.
A few expert tips
Here are a few handy tips from our experts, once you have purchased your mattress!
- Use a mattress protector – this is possibly the best thing you can do to keep your bed clean.
- Rotate your mattress every 3-6 months – this may help to increase the longevity of your product.
- Use a doona/quilt that is the next size up – e.g. if you have a queen size bed, use a king size doona.
