The Koala Plus Mattress is an innovative foam mattress that makes up part of Koala’s popular mattress range. This collection also includes the entry level Koala SE Mattress and the iconic Koala Mattress.

The Koala Plus Mattress allows you to adjust firmness levels by flipping the comfort layer. This mattress also has a flippable seasonal topper that is designed to regulate sleep temperature throughout the year.

Purchase and delivery

As with other mattress in a box products, you can order the Koala Plus Mattress online (through the Koala website), and it will be delivered to your door.

Due to the design of this mattress (with the seperate topper and comfort layer), this product comes in two boxes.

Delivery of the Koala Plus Mattress is free and the mattress can be delivered to almost anywhere in Australia. Koala offers an impressive ‘same-day delivery’ to major metro areas. Please see delivery times below in our Delivery information section further down.

Due to the 2 box delivery system, removing the Koala Plus Mattress from its packaging takes a little longer (15-20 minutes) than single boxed competitors. As always, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box.

The Koala toy was a nice touch, and removing the plastic wrapping peels fairly away easily. You won’t require a knife or scissors to remove the plastic.

As per our standard testing process, we gave the mattress 48 hours to decompress before we conducted our testing.

In terms of aesthetics, the Koala Plus Mattress presents nicely with a modern, natural style. It uses a white and dark green colour theme, and its brand name label gives it a nice finishing touch.

The brand label on the zip puller is also a fine example of Koala’s attention to detail.

Mattress construction

The Koala Plus Mattress is essentially a foam mattress that is made up of 3 main components.

1. Seasonal Flippable Topper

This 2cm thick, innovative topper allows you to choose to sleep cooler or warmer depending on the season. The strong zipper makes it easy to remove and flip.

The ‘Summer Side’ (cool side) uses ticking made of 81% Polyester, 19% Polyethylene. The ‘Winter Side’ (warm side) is made of 35% Organic Cotton, 13% Polyester, and 52% Recycled Polyester.

2. Kloudcell™ Comfort Layer

This double-sided Kloudcell® Comfort Layer, gives you the choice between medium-firm and firm comfort. Simply unzip and flip the comfort layer to find your preferred firmness level.

3. 5-Zone Support Layer

The base layer has 5 targeted high-density support zones, designed to help take the pressure off your spine, hips and shoulders as you position yourself throughout the night.

All Koala Mattresses also have an ‘anti-slip bottom’ that helps to reduce movement of the mattress when placed on a bed base.

How does the customisation work?

As mentioned earlier, the Koala Plus Mattress has a handy customisation feature. This feature allows you to adjust mattress based on firmness and/or temperature.

1. Temperature adjustment

The quilted topper that sits on top of the mattress can simply be unzipped to take you from the Summer Side (with CoolThread™) or the Winter Side (Organic Cotton).

This topper has handy labels to show you which side is which.

Flipping this top layer should be manageable with one person, but is much easier with two people.

2. Firmness adjustment

Underneath the quilted topper is the Kloudcell® Comfort Layer. This layer can be flipped over to produce two different firmness levels – firm or medium-firm.

This comfort layer also comes with labels to make it easy to see which side is which.

Flipping this comfort layer should be manageable with one person, but is much easier with two people.

Other mattress in a box options that include a similar customisation feature include the Macoda Mattress, the Ecosa Mattress, and the popular Koala Mattress.

Comfort and support

The medium-firm version has a spongy feel but is still comfortable and absorbs body weight nicely. In some ways it feels unremarkable but it should offer more than adequate levels of comfort and support for most people.

This configuration should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers), but understandably its suitability may vary between individuals.

In terms of firmness, all of our reviewers agreed that this medium-firm configuration did indeed have a medium firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 6.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Medium-Firm Version

Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.

Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.

We tested the Koala Plus Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.

As you would expect, the firm version is firmer, but we didn’t find a significant difference between the two firmness levels The firm version feels spongy and dense, and absorbs body weight smoothly.

This firm configuration should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers), but again its suitability may vary between individuals.

All of our reviewers agreed that the firm configuration had a medium-firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Firm Version

Both firmness configurations feel stable and both offer good spinal support. Based on our testing, this mattress should also accommodate people of all sizes.

Like many foam mattresses, the Koala Plus Mattress doesn’t have the natural bounce and responsiveness of some innerspring mattresses. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses.

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.

The finer details

For a foam mattress, the build quality of the Koala Plus Mattress is admirable. The quality of the foams and fabric is quite impressive, as is the quality of the stitching and finishings.

The zip mechanism is strong and this made it easy to remove and flip the seasonal topper. The ‘anti-slip’ bottom (100% Polyester with PVC dot) seems to be effective and should prevent any sliding or slipping of the mattress on your bed base.

The Summer Side (cool side) of the seasonal topper does feel cool to touch and may help to regulate sleep temperature during the warmer months. With that said, sleep temperature can be complex with many factors involved.

The Winter Side (warm side) of the seasonal topper feels cozy and may add to the ‘spongy’ feeling of the mattress. It may help to keep you warm on cold nights, but again sleep temperature is complex and unpredictable.

The Summer Side (cool side) of the seasonal topper does feel cool to touch.

Like many other foam mattresses, this mattress isolates motion well, so a restless partner shouldn’t cause too much disruption.

With that said, motion transfer may vary. A larger mattress (e.g. king size) will usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.

As with all other Koala Mattress, the Koala Plus Mattress doesn’t have any side handles. This is disappointing and impractical as side handles will always make moving or transporting a mattress easier.

Edge support is not particularly firm, but is within normal limits for a foam mattress. Most users should be able to use the entire surface of the mattress, without fear of falling off the edge.

The foams used in the Koala Plus Mattress are certified as non-toxic by one of the world’s leading groups in foam testing, CertiPUR-US®.

This certification gives customers the reassurance that a product (or product components) has been tested for toxic chemicals such as mercury, lead, formaldehyde, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

Additionally, all Koala mattresses have antimicrobial additives to prevent the growth of mould and bacteria.

What bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Koala Plus Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.

A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.

Koala Paddington Bed Base

We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.

We don’t recommend the Koala Plus Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may cause damage to the mattress components. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

Trial period and warranty

The Koala Plus Mattress comes with a 120 night trial period, which is slightly superior to a typical trial period (of 100 nights) in the online mattress market. This means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied (conditions do apply).

This mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is a typical warranty period in context of similarly priced competitors.

Available sizes

This mattress is available in 6 sizes (super king, king, queen, double, king single, and single size) so it should accommodate almost all sleeping arrangements.

Final verdict

The Koala Plus Mattress is a nice foam mattress that has a clever design. Its customisation features are easy to use and its non-toxic certifications will appeal to health conscious buyers.
