Finding the best mattress in a box is no easy task in 2021. With over 140 options on the market, it’s no wonder that making a final decision is so difficult.

A ‘mattress in a box’ is simply a mattress that has been compressed by heavy machinery to fit (rolled or folded) into a box. This makes storage and transport more economical, and also makes it easier to place it into your home.

There are plenty of full foam options as well (43%) and a small handful of 100% latex mattresses (3%).

These products are also known as ‘bed in a box’ products, and have significantly changed the way that Australians shop for mattresses. This concept has become so popular in Australia that there is now an overwhelming number of options. Just check out how many brands there are available today!

Handy hints before you buy

There are many things to consider when buying a new mattress. When it comes to buying a mattress online, it’s important that we are aware of some of the details involved with your purchase. Here are a few handy hints to keep in mind!

Pricing

The average mattress in a box in Australia sells for just over $1000 (Queen size). As you can see from our list above, there is some variation in pricing among our top picks, but we would recommend choosing a mattress based on your needs and preferences, rather than on price alone.

Trial periods

The vast majority of mattress in a box in Australia come with a ‘free trial period’. This means that once you have purchased your mattress, you can return it for a full refund if it doesn’t work for you. This allows you to really ‘try before you buy’.

A typical trial period for a bed in a box is 100 nights (just over 3 months). There have been some small changes to some trial periods due to COVID-19, so make sure that you are clear on these changes before you buy.

Best Mattress in a Box

Warranties

Almost all mattress in a box products come with a warranty that should cover any major defects. Some warranties will only cover indentations (body impressions) beyond a certain depth measurement (e.g. 30mm) so it’s best to check and see exactly what each warranty covers. A typical length of warranty for a mattress in a box is 10 years.

Still need help?

Buying a mattress online (without trying it out) may seem unusual, but it has become a hugely popular method of bed shopping in Australia. I’m after the softest mattress I can find and wondered if the Macoda was softer than the Sleep Republic?
I’m a side sleeper on a medium Sleeping Duck and finding it way to firm.

            Hi Dani,

Happy to help. The Macoda Mattress is similar in firmness to the Sleeping Duck (medium) version. The Sleep Republic Mattress is firmer than both the Macoda and Sleeping Duck (medium version).

One of the softest mattress in a box products we have tested is the Deep Dream Premium Mattress – our full review is linked here.
Alternatively, the Silent Night London (Plush) at Beds n Dreams is very soft and comfortable. Our full review is linked here.

Hope that helps but let us know if you have any further queries.

    Dear Bedbuyer,
I like the features of the Eva mattress, but worry that it will wear out quicker because it is not double-sided and cannot be flipped over each week. Is there a double-sided mattress, with all of the Eva’s features, that comes in a box?
    Thanks,

      Hi Scott,
We have tested over 1500 mattresses and the vast majority only have a comfort layer on one side, meaning that there are very few mattresses these days that can be ‘flipped over’. So in answer to your question, there is not a mattress in a box (we have tested over 100) that is double sided unfortunately. The Eva Mattress has a 12 year warranty and should last many years.

We have read a lot of reviews and at present this Sleep republic, Eva and Sleeping Duck sound ok for our needs. We do not like a very firm bed. We would welcome your advice

I would recommend starting with the Sleeping Duck Mattress in a medium feel which is quite soft and very comfortable. The Sleep Republic and Eva are both very good mattresses but are more of a medium / firm feel. Let us know how you go!

Sorry to hear you’re having some pain during sleep. Out of the 140 plus mattress in a box products that we have tested, we rated the Macoda Mattress as the most comfortable. It also allows you to adjust the firmness by switching around the foam comfort layers. For your reference, our full review of the Macoda Mattress is linked here.

    Hi!
I am hoping you can help me choose a mattress. I’ve had an Eva Mattress for some time but its a little too firm for me, and I also don’t like the ribbed surface of the mattress (the deep stitching lines mean the top of the mattress has a ‘wavy’ look).
Can you recommend a mattress with a slightly softer feel than Eva (only a bit.. we don’t want super soft) and a flatter top with no top-stitching?
    Thanks!

      Hi Steph,
      Thanks for visiting Bedbuyer!
Sorry to hear your Eva Mattress is a bit firm and that the surface of the mattress is not to your preference.
Our best recommendation would be the Sleeping Duck Mattress, ordered in a firm feel. It is slightly softer than the Eva Mattress and its surface is nice and flat. Our full review of the Sleeping Duck Mattress is linked here.

          Hi Jess,

Unfortunately most mattress in a box products aren’t suitable for an adjustable bed base.

There are some exceptions though, these can be found in our ‘adjustable compatible category’ on this link here.

Hope that helps but please let us know if you would like to discuss further.

    Hi Bedbuyer
Please HELP! so many options…i’m sure I’ve not managed to check them all, but i am stuck.
Sleeping duck (I like, but price putting me off sadly), Eva, Ecosa, Onebed. Like i said, I’ve not manged to look at them all yet, there may be a better option.
Partner and I are both side and/or back sleepers, occasional tummy sleepers. Both suffer from shoulder and back pain and so badly need to replace our current mattress. The thought of a firm mattress puts me off, (perhaps its just the word firm) never had a memory foam type bed, always just the spring ones.
    Any help, greatly appreciated!

We’ve had an Ecosa and a Koala mattress, both got depressions after 12-18mths and we are both fairly light at 65 & 75kgs. Have been considering the Fern thinking latex might be more durable long term. We both like a firm bed and want something that doesn’t develop depressions. Would the Fern fit the bill.

      Hi Ron,

      Thanks for visiting Bedbuyer!

Sorry to hear your Koala and Ecosa Mattresses have developed impressions.

The Fern Mattress would much less likely develop impressions – latex is more durable / resilient than most foams (like you find in the Koala or Ecosa). The Fern Mattress allows you to flip the mattress over so you can choose between a firm or medium version.

To search prices, the Fern Mattress shop page is linked here for you.

Our mattress, which we need to replace, is part of an ensemble. The lower half of the ensemble seems ok. Can we put a bed-in-a-box mattress on the ensemble base or do we need to buy a new solid base?

Yes, if your ensemble base is in good condition, it should be fine to place a new mattress on your existing base.

Do you think I could put one of the bed in box you recommend ( im leaning towards trying the Eva or sleep republic) on a split king base? (would it make a rise in the middle and sunk on each side, as it esstially two bed bases (with some springs) side-by-side)

        Hi,
Been doing LOTS of research.. my main goal is to have a non toxic bed. I normally have had a furnish mattress with a memory foam pillow top and I love the softness if the pillow top (I can’t do firm)
I’ve been really interested in fern however I’m worried I won’t get the memory foam feel in their pillow top. What would you recommend?

          Hi Kerri,

Happy to assist – all of the mattresses in this list have been certified as ‘non-toxic’. We discuss some of the major non-toxic certifications in this article linked here.

If you’re after a softer feel mattresses with a ‘memory foam’ pillow top, one that we would recommend is the Sherman Mattress (Full Body Hug). It is technically not a ‘mattress in a box’ but you do have a 100 night trial. Sherman do not use toxic chemicals – are you in their delivery zone?

The Fern Mattress (with topper) is a nice softer feel option but as it is made from 100% latex, it may not give you the memory foam feel that you’re after. Having said that, it is very comfortable.

Hope that helps but please let us know if you have any further queries.

Hi, thank you very much for your quick response and for your suggestion. We were thinking of going for either the Eva or Sleep Republic, leaning towards the former since, from what we’ve read, the Sleep Republic is on the softer side. We feel that our Koala is currently a bit softer than we like. If we were looking for something that is slightly firmer than a Koala, would you still recommend the Sleep Republic over the Eva? Thanks once again!

Tossing up between NOA and EVA. I’ve slept on a firm mattress for 15 years. Is Eva too firm? Or more of a medium to firm. Does the layer of foam make it a plush sort of feel? I don’t have any foam layer at the moment.

      Hi Maya,
We rated the Eva Mattress as a ‘medium-firm’ feel at about 7 / 10 firmness (with 10 being the firmest). The Eva Mattress does have a layer of memory foam and latex in the top layer which does give it some comfort but we wouldn’t say a plush feel.
We found the NOA Mattress slightly softer than the Eva Mattress.
Another medium-firm mattress worth considering is the Emma Mattress. Our full review is linked here.

Hello loved reading the reviews it has helped me understand a lot about mattress’s in a box. I unfortunately have just missed the EOFY sales, I was going to buy either the Eva or the Zen sleep mattress although now the eva has gone back up to $900 and I think is on a pre order basis now which I’m unsure of what that means? The zen sleep hybrid mattress is also sold out. So I’m in a bit of a pickle as my partner and I currently have NO mattress so wondering if you could recommend a mattress similar to the eva and the zen? Something specifically good support for shoulder and back pain and joint pain and also side sleepers, Thank you!

      Hi Jenaya,

Thanks for your kind words and happy to help!

Firstly the Eva Mattress is currently $800 (Queen size, using our coupon BEDBUYER100). Pre-order just means it is out of stock but you can still place your order now and it will be sent as soon as new stock arrives (should be a few weeks).

The Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress is also out of stock for the time being with no pre-orders available.

The best next option would be the Naptime 2.0 Mattress (Queen size $809.10 using coupon BED-BUYER). Very nice medium feel, great support and perhaps even more suited for your situation than the Eva and Zen Sleep. Our full review is linked here for you.

        Hi bedbuyer,
I bought the Eva mattress recently and found that the top memory foam layer made it hard to toss and turn at night because of the skinking feeling. It also started to give me a lower back pain in the morning. I tried the Ecosa before with the latex foam on top and found it ok but the edge support. Can you please advise if i can remedy this with a latex topper or would you recommend another hybrid with latex on top. Thanks

          Hi Leo,

The Eva Mattress actually has a layer of latex in the top layer (along with memory foam) but sounds like it is still a bit soft for you. If you wanted something firmer than the Eva, the Zen Sleep Memory Foam Mattress is firmer than the Eva Mattress and would be our next best recommendation – our full review is linked here.

Keep in mind that most ‘hybrid’ mattresses will have latex and memory foam in the top layer.

Could you please offer any advice regarding the Eva & Optimal Support (not in the top 10) mattress.
The Optimal Support is the cost affective option between the two, and apart from this obvious difference what other differences make the Eva the better mattress?
It’s support and overall quality I’m looking for, I need a mattress that will last, I have lower back pain which I associate with the current mattress…..and wall support is a concern….I don’t want to fall out of bed 😀
I tend sleep on my back more and my wife sleeps on both her back and side.
Also I would Ideally like to purchase an Australian made mattress made from Australian materials.

      Hi Derek,

One thing to consider is that the Optimal Support Mattress doesn’t currently have a trial period. The Eva Mattress has a 120 night trial period so you can get a refund if you don’t love it.

We found the Eva Mattress to be slightly more stable and solid which accounts for why we rated it higher. Unfortunately almost all mattress in a box products in Australia are made overseas.

A great site and your reviews are really helping narrow the tough job of deciding where I’ll spend 1/3rd of my life.
My wife and I are side/back sleepers that prefer a (very subjective) firmer style bed. I guess that means not hard, but supportive while still feeling luxurious.
We were looking at the Sleeping Duck, but noted how well you rated the Sleep Republic. If money wasn’t a consideration which would be the preferred mattress? Does Sleeping Duck have the high definition springs (like Sleep Republic) and if not, does it make a significant difference?

Good question regarding the Sleep Republic and Sleeping Duck as both are great mattresses. In terms of feeling ‘supportive but still luxurious’, that describes the Sleep Republic very well. It is comfortable but still has excellent support, which is why we rate it so highly.

Based on what you have mentioned, The Sleep Republic Mattress sounds like it would be the best first option. Keep in mind you have the 100 night trial as a back up. Sleeping Duck doesn’t have a ‘high definition pocket spring system’ but for most people it shouldn’t make too much difference.

Thank you for providing a great resource with the difficult and important decision on mattress purchase. It is such a tough decision. I have done a lot of research and decided on an Eva mattress however it is far too firm for me (and my partner to a lesser extent). I have not been an overly fussy sleeper, never having issues in hotels etc. I am predominately a side sleeper. With the Eva I am waking in the middle of the night and having a dreadful sleep. My hips ache/hurt badly and very uncomfortable(I do not have hip problems). I also find the mattress quite hot (In the middle of a Melbourne winter which is concerning). I am not sure where to go from here. I will return the Eva but replace with what? I greatly appreciate any advice you can provide.

      Hi Jacqui,

Thanks for your kind words and sorry to hear that your Eva Mattress is too firm for you.

The best softer feel mattress in a box options would be the Macoda Mattress or the Sleeping Duck Mattress (medium version). One thing to consider is that the softer you go, the more foam is used which may build up more heat. Sleep Temperature can be complex and is dependant on many factors.

If you’re open to buying from a retail store, the Silent London Mattress is designed for cooling but is also very comfortable and would be one to consider (Beds n Dreams).

I have never bought a mattress in.a box before and was recommended to do so from a friend who owns a Koala, however the options are abundant and confusing.
I carry extra weight, have arthritis, joint pain, shoulder and lower back pain from the dips and curvature of my body (cant lie on my back due to the lower back curve). I generally lie on my side. What brand and style would you recommend.

Based on what you mentioned, the Sleep Republic Mattress would be a good first option. Comfortable and supportive for a side sleeper.

The Sherman Mattress (Just Perfect) would be another one to consider. Although not technically a mattress in a box, you do get a 100 night trial period and is very suitable for a side sleeper.

The Sleep Republic Mattress has a layer of latex in its comfort layer which should prevent any body impressions over time.

Sealy have a huge range of mattresses so it’s hard to compare the Sleep Republic Mattress (or Sherman Mattress) to Sealy mattresses collectively. We do discuss Sealy mattresses overall in our assessment of the major mattress brands – article linked here.

Firstly, cannot praise the site enough – had been lost before stumbling upon it, and the compiled information, reviews and videos have been incredibly helpful.

However, I now find myself stuck trying to choose between a Sleep Republic or an Eva Mattress. I’m an erratic sleeper at best (something I’m hoping an overdue mattress replacement might help with), so I’m unsure how to split the two.

From the existing comments and replies I get the impression they lean somewhat towards the Sleep Republic as a pretty safe/general bet, but was wondering if I could ask in what scenario(s) would you pick an Eva over the Sleep Republic, and vice versa?

Perhaps also whether or not the size of the bed makes a difference at all between brands – say, looking at a King Single rather than Queen?

      Hi KC,

Thanks for your kind words, we appreciate that!

Happy to help – the Sleep Republic is really just a more sophisticated version of the Eva Mattress. Both are excellent at their respective price points, but the Sleep Republic Mattress is a bit more comfortable, has a better spring system, and is worth the extra spend if you can stretch it.

You would select the Eva Mattress in the case that you didn’t want to spend the extra $299 (Queen size).

Ah. I hadn’t noticed that great a price difference due to focusing on the King Single size, where the difference from the listed prices only appears to be $29. In hindsight there, realise I worded the query about sizes poorly, sorry…
To rephrase it in terms of the above, is that more likely just a case of the two brands scaling their size pricing differently, or is Sleep Republic’s Queen discernibly better quality or more sophisticated than their own King Single (bar the obvious less total springs etc)?
For example, would your advice change comparing a King Single from each brand, rather than comparing a Queen from each brand?

          Hi again KC,

I see what you mean now!

Our reviews would stay the same, regardless of what size the mattress is. So a Queen size Sleep Republic Mattress would be rated equally well as a King single Sleep Republic Mattress. Other than the obvious reduction in spring number, the mattress is virtually the same.

      Hi Tim,

Most of our highly rated / recommended mattress in a box products are well certified as ‘non-toxic’ and so should be suitable for those who have allergies (or sensitivities). A good mattress protector and washing your sheets regularly will also help. We have summarised some of the best non-toxic mattresses in this article linked here.

The Fern Mattress is a very nice mattress in a box option (100% latex) that is hypoallergenic – shop page linked here.

Hope that helps but let us know if you have any further queries!

        Hi guys.
I have bought the Eva and the ecosa mattress. Before I bought those two I had really bad lower back pain, but since I bought the Eva, was the first of those two that I bought, when I sleep on my side my spine hurts so bad and my joints were in a lot of pain, that is the reason why I bought the ecosa, but it didn’t change anything, I still get the same pain, and it is driving me crazy not to be have a good night sleep. Can you recommend anything?

        Best regards.

But how do these compare to “regular” mattresses? I can’t find anything like this that will review them head to head with “regular” mattresses. Is that because, in the end, they may be the best mattress in a box, but they still aren’t anywhere near as good as decent offerings that don’t need the compromises required to fit into a box so it’s just not fair on the “in a box” offerings to compare them directly with the others? How does your best overall here, the Sleep Republic one, really compare head to head with the Silent Night Onyx that you’ve labelled the best mattress of 2020? Or even compared to the Sherman mattress you’ve listed as best value, and is more of a similar cost?

      Hi Chris,

Thanks for your enquiry – this is certainly a common question!

Firstly, we have tested over 120 ‘mattress in a box’ products, so as you can imagine there is a wide range of quality and value in this specific market. In essence, it’s difficult to generalise mattress in a box options (and therefore compare them as a group to retail store mattresses) as there are so many. We categorise them separately from ‘regular retail store’ mattresses due to the fact they have unique purchase, delivery, and refund systems that are not usually offered in retail stores. We certainly do not categorise them based on quality.

Further to your question, our ‘Mattress of the Year in 2020’ (Silent Night Onyx) is definitely superior in quality and more sophisticated, as you may expect based on the price difference. Nevertheless, the Sleep Republic Mattress is about as good a mattress as you will find (in our opinion) at that price point in any retail store. Keep in mind also that many retail store mattresses have had their spring units compressed at some stage so the ‘compression into a box’ certainly doesn’t always relate to inferior quality.

The Sleep Republic Mattress and Sherman Mattress are very comparable in terms of quality. To our previous point, the Sherman Mattress is not technically a ‘mattress in a box’ which is why we have included this in the ‘retail store’ category on our site.

In summary, there is a huge range of quality and value in the mattress in a box market. We would avoiding comparing them to ‘regular retail store’ mattresses as it implies that they are all the same. We have discussed some of the ‘myths’ about mattress in a box in this article linked here which may shed some more light on this matter.

Hope that helps but more than happy to discuss further!

Hi, we have tried Sleeping Duck and Ecosa and not happy with either. Trouble turning in Ecosa, edge sags too much, pressure on hip, lower back ache. (Both are side sleepers with back issues). We previously had a AH Beard Latex mattress which was great. We are considering Fern or Zenna or Sleep Republic. Advice?

      Hi Karen,

Sorry to hear that the Ecosa Mattress and Sleeping Duck Mattress didn’t work for you.

The Fern Mattress would definitely be one to consider, very comfortable and has the option of a firm or medium side. (There is a 6-7 week wait on King and Queen sizes currently). Click here to get free delivery.

We found the Zenna Mattress a little hard so we wouldn’t highly recommend that for you at this stage.

The Sleep Republic Mattress also has a very nice balance of comfort and support. Definitely more comfortable than the Ecosa and has a more ‘luxurious’ feel compared with the Sleeping Duck Mattress. Our full review (with discount code) is linked here.

      Thanks for your kind words!

The Fern Mattress and Sleeping Duck Mattress are nice options but perhaps not quite as firm as some others you may want to look at.

The Eva Mattress, Idyll Premium Mattress, or the Noa Lite Mattress are all good firmer feel options to consider.

      Hi PW,

Yes, tough choice. Both very good for partner disturbance and back support.

Having said that, we did find the Noa Luxe to be a bit more comfortable and refined. It has better quality comfort layers as well as a layer of micro coils, so overall comfort and support are slightly better on the Noa Luxe. For this reason, we would go for the Noa Luxe Mattress. Happy to help. Softer feel mattresses are usually more expensive than firmer mattresses as they use more foams (which add to the production cost).

I know it’s a little above budget but our best recommendation (by far) would be the Macoda Mattress which is currently $1080 (King size) on sale for Boxing Day (ends 4th January 2021).

    Hi Bedbuyer,

I am currently 4 nights into my trial on an Ecosa mattress and it is looking doubtful that I will be keeping this mattress.

My biggest annoyance is that when you sit on the edge of the bed it sags so then you feel like you are sitting on a slide. Also, I am finding the mattress too firm but was hoping that would ease off after a while.

Are there any mattresses you can recommend where the edges don’t sink when you sit on them? And that are not as firm as the Ecosa? I saw that Sleeping Duck has reinforced edges, would this correct the issue? I am mostly a side sleeper but do tend to toss and turn.

    Thanks,

    Hi Bedbuyer,

Thank you for all the reviews. Am looking for a suitable mattress for my parents both 78, with health concerns, who are side sleepers are currently have new mattress that is way too firm. They both have shoulder and hip pain so they need support and comfort where they don’t feel like they are sleeping on a plank of wood. Oh and they would like minimal partner disturbance as I believe one complains about the other moving around sleeping all over the place. Would the Sleep Republic Queen bed be suitable, they currently have a metal slat frame? Thank you in advance.

      Hi Sarah,

Thanks for providing all of that useful information. The Sleep Republic Mattress should be a nice option for your parents. It has a nice ‘medium-firm’ feel so is nicely balanced with comfort and support. Partner disturbance is minimal due to its high definition pocket spring system, and it has a 100 night trial period so they can return it (for a full refund) if it really doesn’t suit them.

Another option that comes to mind (not a mattress in a box) is the Silent Night London Mattress. Australian made, very comfortable, and well priced. It might be worth trying this out at Beds n Dreams if they have a store close by.

Anyway hope that gives you some direction but always here if you need further assistance.

All of the mattresses listed here in our top 10 are well certified as ‘non-toxic’ which you could classify as ‘hypoallergenic’. As you can imagine, allergies and sensitivities are unique to each person but we are confident in recommending any of these in context of their non-toxic certifications. We have discussed these certifications in more detail in this article linked here.

      Hi Zoe,

In the ‘mattress in a box’ category, the best option we would recommend for ‘side sleepers and temperature control’ would be the Sleep Republic Mattress. It has a nice ‘medium-firm’ feel which should offer enough comfort for side sleepers, and is specially designed for ventilation. Our full review (includes video review and discount code) is linked here.

Another option that you should consider (if you really want temperature control) is the Silent Night Onyx Mattress. Hi Steph,

If you’re looking for a ‘soft-medium’ feel, our best recommendation would be the Macoda Mattress which is very comfortable but also has nice support.

The Emma Mattress is a firm feel so we wouldn’t recommend that for you (assuming you like a medium-soft feel), and we found the Onebed 8 to be pretty basic and unsophisticated.

      Hi Bruce,

The Sleep Republic Mattress is a ‘medium-firm’ feel so it should offer enough comfort for most side sleepers. As you said, it has been designed to help with cooling and ventilation.

In terms of comparing the Sleep Republic Mattress and the Noa Luxe Mattress, both are very good mattresses and it’s a tough one to call. Both have a medium-firm feel and are well made. If we had to choose, we would still go for the Sleep Republic as a better mattress overall. It has a slightly more refined spring system and feels a little more stable than the Noa Luxe. Again though, it’s a line call.

Hi BedBuyer, really appreciate your expertise in this very confusing area of the market.
I have recently bought the Emma mattress and find it to be really comfortable (although would probably prefer something a little softer). However, I am really struggling with heat retention with this mattress, and its affecting my sleep now that the weather is getting a bit warmer (wasn’t an issue in colder winter nights).
Given that I’m after something a little cooler, I was looking at alternatives either with latex (like the HappySleep – a good price point, but very few reviews online) or a hybrid option (tossing up between the Noa and the Eva).
Given that 1/ the Emma was comfortable but slightly too firm and 2/ my main priority is a cooler night’s sleep, could you help me to decide between HappySleep, Noa and Eva?

    Thanks so much!

      Hi Hayden,

Thanks for visiting Bedbuyer and for your kind words!

Happy to help. Sorry to hear that your Emma Mattress is causing some heat problems. Sleep Temperature can certainly affect your sleep quality and can be influenced by a number of factors (room temperature, partner, linen, mattress, pillow, etc.).

We generally recommend a spring mattress (e.g. Eva Mattress) for those who are ‘hot sleepers’ as they offer more ‘air-flow’ and ventilation than foam mattresses (e.g. Emma Mattress). Again though, it is tricky to predict and can depend on each individual.

Out of the 130 mattress in a box products that we have tested, we would say that the Sleep Republic Mattress would be the best in terms of cooling/ventilation. A bit more expensive obviously, but worth the extra spend if you can stretch it. Otherwise, we would go the Eva Mattress out of the 3 you mentioned.

Hope that helps but please let us know if you would like to discuss further.

      Hi Angela,

Thanks for visiting Bedbuyer and for your kind words, we appreciate that!

Great to hear that your husband loves the Sleep Republic Mattress but obviously we need the mattress to work for you too.

The Sleeping Duck Mattress would be a sensible option for you and your husband moving forward. As you said it would be best to order one side firm (for your husband) and one side medium (for you) and go from there. You have plenty of options in terms of firmness ‘customisation’ so you should be able to configure the mattress to suit you both. Our full review (which includes a video review) shows how it all works.

Sleep Temperature can be complex with many factors involved. Based on our product testing, we found the Sleeping Duck Mattress to be well ventilated, and we haven’t really had any customer feedback about it being hot to sleep on. Again though, it really can depend on the individual/s.

Hope that helps but please let us know if you would like to discuss further 🙂

    Hello BB,

Thank you for the great page, I have found it super helpful!

I have had the same mattress for ~14 years, since I was 13 and it is all I can remember in terms of mattresses. I am looking at replacing it with the Sleep Republic or Macoda however because of my limited exposure I am not exactly sure what firmness to go for. Although hard to know I would say my current mattress (cushion top, spring) is quite firm. I haven’t minded it over the years but not sure if a softer mattress would give me that next level of comfort or my body is used to/prefers a firm mattress. What are the main reasons people don’t like softer mattress’s?

Recently I am starting to notice some minor shoulder pain and lower back pain which has driven the decision for an upgrade. I sleep mainly on my side or stomach (never back).

    Thanks for your advice!

It’s certainly hard to know ‘firmness levels’ if you haven’t slept on many mattresses, so thanks for giving some context there. We would say the majority of people go well on a ‘medium-firm’ feel (e.g. Sleep Republic Mattress) as it gives a nice balance of comfort and support. Having said that, each person is different in terms of preference and needs. Softer mattresses can often compromise spinal support (the body sinks into it), but some people do require softer mattresses as they offer good ‘pressure relief’.

We would still lean towards the Sleep Republic for you as a sensible first option. As a side and stomach sleeper, you obviously want some comfort, but you don’t want to sink into the mattress in the front lying position as this can place pressure through your lower back. Keep in mind that that if it really doesn’t suit, you have the option of the return/refund. For your reference, our full review is linked here.

Hope that gives you some direction, but let us know if you want to discuss further!

    Hi there!

We’ve realised that we’re probably in need of a new mattress but we’re unsure as to whether to do a mattress in a box or one of the store bought ones. Is there much difference between the two? Are the store bought (as in going into somewhere like Harvey Norman) mattresses better for sleeping/injured backs long term than the boxed mattresses?

    Thanks so much 😊

      Hi Bethany,

Thanks for visiting Bedbuyer and happy to help!

It’s actually very difficult to generalise ‘mattress in a box’ or ‘retail store’ mattresses. There is a huge range of quality, comfort, and value in both categories.

So to answer to your question, the main difference will be the ‘shopping method’. Buying from a retail store will allow you to try the mattress out in-store, with ‘face-to-face’ customer service. Buying online means that you can’t try out the mattress, but you have the advantage of free delivery and a ‘free trial period’ (where you can get a refund if you don’t like it). We have summarised the pros and cons of each in our article linked here.

So the first thing to do is decide what ‘shopping method’ suits you best, and then we can recommend the best options for you based on your needs and preferences (e.g. firmness, quality, budget etc.). More than happy to guide you through some options.

Hope that helps but please let us know your thoughts!

Hi, thanks so much for the information. We tried the Zeek Hybrid Queen instore and liked that it was a softer medium feel than others we have seen. Do you recommend this brand? They seem very new with very few reviews. Any other suggestions of brands with this medium plush sort of feel? Thanks heaps for your help! 🙂

      Hi Ana,

We have tested and reviewed the Zeek Hybrid Mattress (you can search for any item in our search bar) – our review is linked here . They are a new company which would explain the low number of customer reviews, but we would be cautious of using customer reviews when buying a mattress (we wrote an article on this linked here).

The Macoda Mattress would be our pick in the mattress in a box category with a medium-plush feel. Very comfortable and one of our award-winners in 2020. Our review is linked here.

Hope that helps but please let us know if you would like to discuss further.

    Hi,
I have recently had major spinal surgery and I’m sleeping on a mattress that feels like a rock at present and I’m getting a sore back and I’m not sure which new one to go for with so many choices. I want a mattress that’s soft and will support my back and shape to my body but I don’t want it to be so soft that it never springs back and my body shape is stuck in it after a short time of owning it. Please help!

      Hi Lee,

Thanks for visiting Bedbuyer and happy to assist.

The Sleeping Duck Mattress (medium feel) might be a good one to consider for your situation. It has a medium-soft feel but still very supportive. The great thing is that you can adjust the firmness level (by requesting additional foams) so that you can get the firmness just right (for you). This is best illustrated in our full review which includes a video review, linked here.

Have a look at our Sleeping Duck Mattress review and let us know your thoughts!

My husband and I have a king size Amerisleep AS4 mattress that we bought from Beds n Dreams a couple years ago. It came in a box. The AS4 is plush but to me it’s more like a medium. I am a side sleeper and love the mattress.
I’m now looking to buy a queen size mattress for my adult son who is predominantly a front sleeper but sometimes sleeps on his side. I don’t want the price tag of the Amerisleep, but want the same comfort and quality. Firstly, what would you recommend for him? And would your recommendation be similar in firmness to the AS4 or AS3 or AS2 of the Amerisleep. ( I was thinking sleep republic, sleeping duck, Fern or Macoda if the others are too firm). I should mention nothing too hot either as he sweats easily too.
    Thank you in advance.

      Hi Lesley,

Thanks for visiting Bedbuyer and happy to help.

The Sleep Republic Mattress would be a very sensible choice for your son. It generally accommodates front (and side sleepers) very well.

Our recommendation for your son would be a ‘medium-firm’ feel (e.g. Sleep Republic Mattress) which offers a nice balance of comfort and support. We certainly agree with you that even the softer Amerisleep mattresses are not ‘super soft’, so the Sleep Republic Mattress would similar firmness to the AS3. With this said though, it’s difficult to compare these mattresses as they ‘feel’ quite different.

The Sleep Republic Mattress is designed to be well ventilated so it should also help with cooling.

Hope that gives you some direction but please let us know if you would like to discuss further.

      Hi Adele,

Yes, both are very good mattresses. As you may have seen from our reviews, we found the Noa Luxe Mattress a touch firmer than the Sleep Republic (not good or bad) and the Noa Luxe has a layer of micro springs in its top comfort layer (Sleep Republic doesn’t).

Overall though, we found the Sleep Republic slightly more comfortable and refined. Very close call though!

Hello, we’ve been looking at the Sleeping Duck medium versus the Sherman medium. Our current Sealy firm mattress is too firm so we’re looking for something a bit softer, although my husband doesn’t want too soft. I’m leaning towards the sleeping duck as the Sherman in the showroom felt quite soft and seemed to sink when I sat on the edge. Do you have any suggestions between the two or any others? My husband is mostly a stomach sleeper, I switch between stomach, side and sometimes back.

      Hi Martin,

We actually found the Sleeping Duck (Medium) even a bit softer than the Sherman (Just Perfect) Medium.

We would recommend either the Sleep Republic Mattress or the Sleeping Duck (firm). Both are nicely balanced with comfort and support (not too firm, not too soft).

      Hi Adrian,

Sleep Temperature can be complex and depends on a number of factors (e.g. mattress, pillow, sleep partner, room temperature). Furthermore, each person may react differently (with temperature) to the same mattress. So you probably get the idea it’s difficult to say what the ‘coolest’ mattress is.

With that said, we generally recommend ‘spring’ mattresses (as opposed to full foam) for hot sleepers as they usually have better ventilation/air flow. The Sleep Republic Mattress is a nice spring mattress that has been designed specially for increased ventilation, so this would be one to consider. As we said though, it is hard to predict and we certainly can’t guarantee that it will ‘sleep cool’.

You may also want to check out our article ‘Australia’s Top 5 Mattresses for Hot Sleepers in 2020‘ – article linked here.

We have tested both the Sleep Republic Mattress and the Sherman Mattress (range) very throughly. In terms of quality and durability, we would be confident that both would stand up very well over time.

I think the Sleep Republic Mattress would be a sensible option based on what you have mentioned. It is comfortable and has a very good spring system. Our full review (includes video review and discount code) is linked here.

    Hi there

Wondering which options you’d suggest that resemble the feel of this mattress (our current one): Revive “comfort medium” interactive pocketcoil. We’ve had it for ~10 years and I think it’s not made any more. But I was told it’s equivalent to “classic aura”, 6 out of 10 in terms of firmness https://sleepdoctorfyshwick.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/classic-aura.pdf

Do you have a sense if 6/10 is likely to be a true firmness rating for that mattress? Based on that we have ruled out many of the mattress-in-a-box options as too firm.

We have also liked this one: https://thathotelbed.com.au/shop/mattresses/jackalope-mattress/

      Hi Dima,

Unfortunately we haven’t tested the Classic Aura or the Jackalope Mattress so it’s hard to comment on the feel and firmness of these.

Based on our testing, two really nice 6/10 firm mattresses would be:

      1. Naptime 2.0 Mattress – our full review (with discount code and video review) is linked here.

      2. Sherman (Just Perfect) Mattress – our full review (with discount code and video review) is linked here.

Hello, I am 69 female, arthritic hip, no partner, side sleeper. Have been sleeping on Sealy Posturepedic plush pillow top for 20 years which was feeling a bit lumpy. Last week I purchased the Sleep Republic, delivery was excellent, I unpacked on my own, quality is great and looks superb, but I felt like I was sleeping on the floor, it seemed so hard. The 3 nights sleep have been poor and I am feeling stiff and sore. I am embarrassed to even think of returning, do I persevere? Do you have any other recommendations for me. Hi Jan,

Sorry to hear that the Sleep Republic Mattress isn’t working for you. We did rate it very well overall, but obviously if you find it too firm it’s best to return it. The most important thing is that we find you the right mattress, and Sleep Republic have very good after sales service. You can call them on 1800 270 871 or email info@sleeprepublic.com.au to organise your return/refund.

Knowing that the Sleep Republic Mattress is too firm for you, we would recommend the following products as sensible next options:

      1. Macoda Mattress – our full review (with video review and discount code) is linked here.

      2. Sherman Mattress (Full Body Hug) – our full review (with video review and discount code) is linked here.

    Hi Jac,

Sorry to hear about your Slumberland Cornwall Mattress. If you believe that the product is defective, we would consider contacting Snooze for a warranty claim. This mattress has a 10 year warranty.

We have tested the Slumberland Cornwall many times and we did rate it as a firm mattress (8/10 firm). If you’re happy to go a little firmer, the Sleep Firm Mattress is excellent – Australian made and very well built. It’s very firm but certainly not ‘rock hard’, and it comes with a 100 night free trial period. Our full review (includes discount code) is linked here.

Thanks so much for the suggestion, I really appreciate it. Will go check that out now 🙂

I did contact snooze and found their response extremely underwhelming so they’ve lost a customer which is unfortunate as I have been happy with them up until the first time I tried to get them to see if a problem with the mattress I have will be fixable advert warranty or not

Unfortunately it seems as if the 10year warranty will be hard to impossible to convince them to honour when push comes to shove, as well as costing me hundreds of dollars on a broken mattress that needs throwing out with little chance of success to even try. Even though the problems are obvious in the photos, they’re insisting on a professional steam clean inspect it, then take the mattress away for further inspection with no guarantees they’ll fix anything which seems like a tactic to discourage warranty claim attempts. It would also leave me nothing to sleep on for an unspecified amount of time (could be weeks or months, no one could say).

Basically it was insinuated that if I insisted on getting it looked at, it was likely they’d only fix the stitching issue because “who knows what could have happened to the springs since it’s not a new mattress”. (Whatever that means since it’s a 10year warranty. Single mattress belonging to an adult?? Sounds like they think we use them as trampolines or something for fun maybe?)) Even a straightforward no we won’t cover X problem with explanation as to why would have been better instead of the obvious runaround. So no longer interested in dealing with them unfortunately if that’s their attitude when there are other companies I can buy from.

        Hi Jac,

Sorry to hear about the situation with Snooze. That’s certainly very disappointing.

As you have described, retail store warranties vary greatly in terms of the willingness of each store/company to honour specific problems. The advantage of buying online, is that with a trial period, you get a full refund – no questions asked.

The only mattress in a box that comes in a super king (that we are aware of) is the Ecosa Mattress. You can see our full review here, or you can jump straight to their shop page here.

Even the biggest bed in a box brands (e.g. Sleeping Duck, Koala, Sleep Republic) don’t come in a super king so this size does limit your options.
