Ecosa Mattress Review
The Ecosa Mattress is one of the most well-known mattress in a box products in Australia. It offers a practical ‘customisation’ feature but it is not as comfortable as many of its competitors.
Purchase and delivery
Just like other ‘bed in a box’ products, the Ecosa Mattress can be ordered online and will be delivered to your door in a compact box. Delivery is free and shipping times are fast. In fact, ‘same day delivery’ is available to many metro areas (see delivery times below in our ‘Delivery’ section).
Unpacking the Ecosa Mattress should only take 5-10 minutes, and we allowed it to decompress for 24 hours before testing. You can see this mattress in ‘real life’ in Ecosa’s promotional unboxing video here:
The Ecosa Mattress box is one of the nicer looking boxes we have seen. It was also easy to manoeuvre, thanks to its sturdy wheels. It was relatively straight forward to remove from its packaging and, as usual, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box.
From a visual perspective, the Ecosa Mattress has a modern, stylish appearance. It uses a grey and white colour theme with Ecosa’s distinct blue coloured brand label.
The Ecosa Mattress starts with a Tencel cover that is removable and washable. This sits over a rather unique ‘inner cover’ that is designed to help keep the mattress waterproof and dust mite-free.
This cover is certainly a practical addition to the mattress, but it does feel a little unusual. During sleep movements it ‘crackles’ and almost feels as if you are rolling over a plastic sheet. Not a deal breaker but something worth mentioning.
The Ecosa Mattress is available in all 7 mattress sizes.
These (Tencel and waterproof) covers sit over multiple foam layers that include a ‘G-7 Gel Memory Foam’ (blue) and an ‘ECO-Tex Memory Foam’ (white). Additionally, the main support structure of this mattress is a thick piece of support foam, appropriately named ‘Ergonomic Support Foam’ (yellow).
How does the customisation work?
One aspect of the Ecosa Mattress that is noteworthy is its level of ‘customisation’. The foam layers (discussed above) can be interchanged to create a firm, medium-firm, and medium feel, allowing you to choose a firmness that suits your individual preference.
As much as the firm version is noticeably firmer, we didn’t notice a huge difference in the firmness options overall.
Comfort and support
The firm option involves the configuration of the Ergonomic Support Foam on top, followed by the G-7 Gel Memory Foam, and then the ECO-Tex Memory Foam. Our team rated it as a 8.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
The medium-firm option is set up with the ECO-Tex Memory Foam on top, followed by the G-7 Gel Memory Foam, and the Ergonomic Support Foam. Our team rated it as a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest):
Lastly, the medium feel involves the G-7 Gel Memory Foam on top, the ECO-Tex Memory Foam, and then the Ergonomic Support Foam. Our team also rated it as a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest):
The firm version, (as you would expect) feels ‘hard’ and dense and doesn’t come with much pressure relief. The medium-firm version had a nicer mix of comfort and support and seemed to absorb body weight evenly.
The medium version didn’t absorb body weight particularly smoothly, and just didn’t feel as nice as the medium-firm option. To this point, we liked the ‘medium-firm’ option (ECO-Tex Memory Foam on top) the best.
The Ecosa Mattress supports the spine adequately in all sleeping positions, but it doesn’t offer the same level of comfort as some other mattress in a box products (such as the Sleep Republic Mattress or the Macoda Mattress).
Furthermore, it doesn’t respond to sleep movements particularly well, and doesn’t have the natural ‘bounce’ of many innerspring mattresses. Nevertheless, its levels of comfort and support are reasonable, and it may very well suit those who prefer a firmer feel.
The finer details
Overall build quality of the Ecosa Mattress is fair. Edge support was also a little lacking and the zip (that removes the Tencel cover) was a bit deficient compared to others we have tested. It could certainly be bigger and stronger.
We detected quite a bit of partner disturbance which is unusual for a full foam mattress, and this motion transfer was certainly more noticeable than on one of its main competitors, the Koala Mattress.
The Ecosa Mattress is available in all 7 mattress sizes (super king, king, queen, double, king single, long single, and single size) which is worth noting. Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2021.
Despite its popularity and customisation feature, the Ecosa Mattress lacks the comfort and refinement of many of its rivals. Its firm, full foam construction may not be to everyone’s liking, but nevertheless, it does come with a 100 night trial period.
