Ecosa Mattress Review
The Ecosa Mattress is one of the most well-known ‘mattress in a box’ products in Australia. It features a practical customisation feature that allows you to adjust firmness levels to suit your preference.
Purchase and delivery
Just like other ‘bed in a box’ products, the Ecosa Mattress can be ordered online and will be delivered to your door in a compact box. Delivery is free and shipping times are fast (see delivery times below in our ‘Delivery’ section). ‘Same day delivery’ is available to many metro areas.
Unpacking the Ecosa Mattress should only take 5-10 minutes, and we allowed it to decompress for 24 hours before testing. You can see this mattress in ‘real life’ in Ecosa’s promotional unboxing video here:
The Ecosa Mattress box arrived in excellent condition and is is possibly the best looking box in the online mattress market. The box is also easy to manoeuvre, thanks to its sturdy wheels. Ecosa also provides a welcome pack (in the box) that comes with an information brochure and a plastic cutter (to assist in the unboxing process).
The mattress was relatively easy to remove from its packaging and, as usual, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box.
From a visual perspective, the Ecosa Mattress has a modern, stylish appearance. It uses a grey and white colour theme with Ecosa’s distinct blue coloured brand label.
Mattress construction
The Ecosa Mattress starts with a Tencel and polyester cover that is removable and washable. This sits over a waterproof ‘inner cover’ that is designed to help keep the mattress waterproof and dust mite-free.
This waterproof cover is a practical addition, but it does change how the mattress absorbs body weight (we will discuss this later). Nevertheless, this waterproof cover can be removed if desired.
The Ecosa Mattress is available in all 7 Australian mattress sizes.
These (Tencel and waterproof) covers sit over multiple foam comfort layers that include a ‘G-7 Gel Memory Foam’ (blue) and an ‘ECO-Tex Memory Foam’ (white).
The main support structure of this mattress is a thick piece of support foam, appropriately named ‘Ergonomic Support Foam’ (yellow).
How does the customisation work?
One aspect of the Ecosa Mattress that makes it rather unique is its level of ‘customisation’. What this means is that you can create a medium, medium-firm, or firm feel by unzipping the outer covers and rearranging the foam layers.
This adjustment process is best done with two people as the foam layers are quite heavy. As much as the firm version is noticeably firmer, we didn’t notice a huge difference in the firmness options overall. We will discuss this further in the section below.
Comfort and support
The ‘default’ configuration that the mattress arrives in is the ‘medium’ feel option. This involves the G-7 Gel Memory Foam on top, the ECO-Tex Memory Foam in the middle, and then the Ergonomic Support Foam on the bottom.
The configuration should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.
As we will discuss below, this version is the one that we liked best. Our team rated this configuration as a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Medium version
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
The medium-firm option is set up with the ECO-Tex Memory Foam on top, followed by the G-7 Gel Memory Foam, and the Ergonomic Support Foam.
The configuration should suit most back sleepers but it may also suit side sleepers and front sleepers. Our team rated it as a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest):
Medium-firm version
Finally, the firm option involves the configuration of the Ergonomic Support Foam on top, followed by the G-7 Gel Memory Foam, and then the ECO-Tex Memory Foam.
The configuration should suit most back sleepers but it may also suit some side sleepers and front sleepers. Our team rated it as a 8.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Firm version
The firm version, (as you would expect) feels ‘hard’ and dense and doesn’t come with much pressure relief. The medium-firm version has a nicer mix of comfort and support but still had a slight ‘hardness’ to it.
The medium version was the softest out of the three configurations. It still had a dense feel, but absorbed body weight smoothly. As we said earlier, it was the configuration that our team liked the best.
Medium feel (default) configuration
All versions of the Ecosa Mattress support the spine adequately in all sleeping positions, but it just doesn’t match the comfort level of some other foam mattress in a box products (such as the Emma Mattress or the Zeek Original Mattress).
The mattress doesn’t respond to sleep movements particularly well, and lacks the natural ‘bounce’ of many innerspring mattresses. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses. Nevertheless, its levels of comfort and support are reasonable.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
One thing that is worth mentioning here is the (inner) waterproof cover. What was interesting is that the top section of this cover seemed to feel more ‘silky’ whereas the bottom section has a more ‘paper-like’ consistency.
Ecosa Mattress Waterproof Cover
As we alluded to earlier, we found that this cover did affect the feel of each mattress configuration. As such, we noticed that each version was slightly softer (and more comfortable) once the waterproof cover was removed.
The finer details
The overall build quality of the Ecosa Mattress is very respectable. Edge support was within normal limits for a foam mattress and the zips (that removes the outer and inner cover) seemed to work well.
Partner disturbance was present, but certainly not significant. Still, it was still a little more noticeable than on one of its main competitors, the New Koala Mattress.
In terms of after sales service, the Ecosa offers a solid 100 night trial period and a 15 year warranty. It is also well certified as non-toxic. All foams are certified by CertiPUR-US® and the washable cover is certified by OEKO-TEX®. These certifications are among the most reputable in foam and fabric testing.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Ecosa Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).
A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.
Sleep Republic Pro Base
The Ecosa Mattress can also be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
The Ecosa Mattress is available in all 7 Australian mattress sizes (super king, king, queen, double, king single, long single, and single size) so it will suit all sleeping arrangements.
It’s worth noting that this is the only full size mattress range available in the Australian mattress in a box market. Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2022.
Final verdict
The Ecosa Mattress is a good quality foam mattress that comes with some unique features. Its firm, dense feel may not be to everyone’s liking, but its customisable design does offer some degree of firmness adjustability.
