If you are considering a foam mattress, below is some important information that you need to keep in mind.
Why buy a foam mattress?
Even though ‘traditional’ innerspring mattresses make up the majority of mattress products in Australia, foam mattresses are still popular for a number of reasons.
Firstly, foam mattresses are often lighter in weight than equivalent innerspring mattresses. This makes them easier to transport and easier to change the bed sheets.
Emma Comfort Mattress weighs only 29 kgs (Queen size)
Foam mattresses typically have less ‘motion transfer’ than innerspring mattresses. This means that partner disturbance is usually less pronounced on foam mattresses. This is important for couples, especially if one partner is a restless sleeper.
This low level of partner disturbance (on a foam mattress) was famously demonstrated in Koala’s ‘wine glass’ video:
Affordability is another reason why foam mattresses have become more popular. Foam mattresses are typically cheaper than innerspring and latex mattresses, making them an attractive proposition for the price conscious shopper.
What does a foam mattress feel like?
Good quality foam mattresses usually offer a nice balance of comfort and support. They typically have a ‘spongy’, dense feel that moulds to your body, differing from the more bouncy, responsive feel of many innerspring mattresses.
The Koala Mattress has a 3 zone base layer
Foam mattresses often contain a foam ‘core’ component that provides the solid foundation of the mattress. These can offer good spinal support, and some even contain zones to accommodate the different parts of the body.
Different types of foam
There are many different foams that are used in mattresses. These vary in quality, density, and consistency, so comfort levels can vary greatly depending on what foams are used.
The most common type of foam used in mattresses is polyurethane foam. Memory foam (which is polyurethane foam with added chemicals) is also very common, whilst certain manufacturers use specific foam products to differentiate themselves from their competitors.
Bio-Pur™ foam used in the Amerisleep mattress range
For example, Amerisleep mattresses contain a special foam called Bio-Pur™. This foam uses plant-based materials and a ‘variable pressure foaming’ (VPF) manufacturing process.
This process also produces zero emissions making this particular foam comfortable, and environmentally friendly.
Safety and durability of foam
Many mattresses have had their foam components formally certified as non-toxic and eco-friendly. This gives shoppers the peace of mind that their new mattress is safe to bring it into their home. We specify these certifications in each of our mattress reviews.
The Ecosa Mattress is well certified as non-toxic
As you would expect, the quality of foam mattresses in Australia varies greatly. Poor quality foams have a distinct tendency to degrade and sag in a short period of time. This can result in restlessness, poor spinal support, and back pain.
