How do I buy the Onebed Original Mattress?

The Onebed Original Mattress is available to purchase online via the Onebed website, with orders processed securely and shipped directly to your home.

Delivery is free to most locations across mainland Australia and Tasmania, although some regional or remote areas may attract an additional fee. Any extra charges are clearly outlined at checkout before completing your purchase. Delivery timeframes are also provided at this stage and will vary depending on your location and product availability.

Once your order has been dispatched, you’ll receive tracking details so you can monitor its progress. Delivery is made to your front door, and like most mattresses in a box, it arrives compressed and rolled for easier handling.

Our sample arrived in fair condition, with the packaging offering reasonable protection during transit. The box itself is quite simple in appearance, using a standard brown cardboard finish rather than the more premium packaging seen in earlier Onebed versions.

There is a moderate amount of packaging to dispose of, including cardboard and plastic. As with most compressed mattresses, we recommend allowing up to 48 hours for the mattress to fully expand before use.

What does it look like in real life?

The Onebed Original Mattress has a clean, modern look with a simple two-tone design that should suit most bedroom settings. The white quilted top contrasts nicely with the deep navy side panels, giving it a slightly more distinctive appearance than many standard foam mattresses. Branding is minimal and neatly integrated, helping it maintain a tidy, understated finish.

At around 28cm high, the mattress has a fairly typical profile for a foam mattress. This means it sits neatly on most bed bases without feeling overly bulky or dominant in the room. Overall, it presents as a practical, well-balanced design that should blend easily into a wide range of bedroom styles.

What’s inside the Onebed Original Mattress?

1. Tencel® cover

The mattress is finished with a Tencel® cover, a soft and breathable fabric made from sustainably sourced wood pulp. This material is designed to wick away moisture and help regulate temperature throughout the night.

It feels smooth to the touch and should suit those with sensitive skin, while also being durable for long-term use. The cover is removable and machine washable, making it easy to maintain.

2. Auralux™ foam

Beneath the cover sits the Auralux™ foam layer, Onebed’s proprietary material that aims to combine the contouring feel of memory foam with the responsiveness of latex.

This layer gently adapts to the body for pressure relief while still offering a slightly bouncy, responsive feel. It also performs better than traditional memory foam in terms of heat retention, helping to maintain a cooler sleep surface.

3. Cooling gel-infused memory foam

This layer provides additional contouring and pressure relief, with cooling gel infusion designed to reduce heat build-up.

It works to draw heat away from the body and disperse it through the mattress, helping to create a more consistent and comfortable sleep temperature.

4. 5-zone support foam with edge support

At the base of the mattress is a high-density, 5-zone support foam system. This layer is designed to provide targeted support, with softer zones for the shoulders and firmer support through the hips and lower back to promote proper spinal alignment.

The foam is charcoal-infused, which may assist with moisture control and odour reduction. Surrounding the mattress is a reinforced foam edge support system, helping to improve stability and maintain a consistent feel across the entire surface.

How does the customisation work?

The Onebed Original Mattress arrives in its default configuration with the Auralux™ foam layer (the pink layer) on top. This is what Onebed classifies as a medium feel, and if this suits your preference, there is no need to make any adjustments.

If you’d prefer a firmer feel, the process is straightforward. The top cover can be unzipped to access the comfort layer, which can then be flipped so that the blue side – the cooling gel-infused memory foam – is facing up. In this configuration, Onebed classifies the mattress as medium-firm.

As with the Onebed Max, one of the strengths of this design is how easy it is to make the adjustment. The mattress features a supportive perimeter foam encasement, which helps keep the layers neatly in place and makes repositioning the comfort layer simple.

Compared to other adjustable mattresses we’ve tested, this system feels more user-friendly and avoids the alignment issues that can sometimes occur.

Comfort and support

What’s it like to sleep on the Onebed Original Mattress?

In its default configuration – with the Auralux™ foam layer (pink layer) on top – the mattress has a comfortable, slightly spongy feel that contours well to the body.

It offers good pressure relief and a balanced level of comfort, making it suitable for a wide range of sleepers. We rated this setup at around 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Medium configuration

This firmness level should suit most sleeping positions, including side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers, although individual preferences will vary.

When the top layer is flipped so that the cooling gel-infused memory foam (blue layer) is on top, the feel becomes noticeably firmer and slightly denser.

There is a bit more resistance to compression, giving it a more supportive and stable feel overall. We rated this configuration at around 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

Medium-firm configuration

This option is likely to be better suited to back sleepers or those who prefer a firmer, more supportive sleeping surface.

Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.

We tested the Onebed Original Mattress on the Porto Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.

The 5-zone support foam base provides a reasonable level of support across the body. While it doesn’t offer the same level of strength or responsiveness as the spring system found in the Onebed Max, it should still be more than adequate for most people, particularly given the ability to adjust the firmness to suit your needs.

As expected for a foam mattress, responsiveness is quite low. There is very little bounce, and the mattress absorbs movement rather than responding to it. This can be beneficial for reducing disturbance, although it may make changing sleep positions feel slightly less effortless compared to innerspring mattresses.

The finer details

What else should I know?

The overall build quality of the Onebed Original Mattress is respectable for its price point. It may not feel like a high-end, premium product, but the materials and finish are appropriate for what you’re paying.

Stitching is neat, the zip operates smoothly, and the large zip pull makes accessing the internal layers and adjusting firmness straightforward.

One standout aspect is the firmness adjustment design. There is a slightly slippery fabric finish over the comfort layer and perimeter edge, which makes repositioning the layer surprisingly easy. This creates a very user-friendly system that avoids the awkward positioning issues we’ve seen with some other adjustable mattresses.

As with other Onebed mattresses, there are no side handles, which is a little disappointing. While not a deal breaker, it does make moving or rotating the mattress more cumbersome than it needs to be.

Partner disturbance is very minimal, which is a key strength of this mattress. Like most foam mattresses, it absorbs movement effectively, so you’re unlikely to be disturbed by a partner’s movements during the night.

Edge support is quite good, thanks to the perimeter foam encasement. This helps create a stable and consistent feel across most of the mattress surface, allowing users to comfortably utilise the edges without excessive sinkage.

In terms of temperature regulation, foam mattresses can naturally retain more heat than innerspring designs due to reduced airflow. That said, we did not notice any significant heat retention during testing. As always, sleep temperature will depend on a range of factors including bedding, environment, and individual preferences.

Bed base compatibility

What type of bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Onebed Original Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.

A bed base with solid slats such as the Porto Bed Base, would also be very suitable.

Koala Paddington Bed Base

We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

Trial period and warranty

What happens if I don’t like it?

The Onebed Original Mattress comes with a 125-night trial period, allowing customers to test the mattress at home and decide whether it suits their preferences.

To be eligible for a return, the mattress must be used for a minimum of 30 nights to allow for an adjustment period. If you’re still not satisfied, you can request a return anytime within the 125-night window.

If a return is approved, Onebed will arrange for the mattress to be collected and typically donated to charity, provided it is in a clean and reasonable condition. Refunds are issued after the mattress has been collected. It’s worth noting that the trial is limited to two mattresses per household, and certain exclusions apply, including mattresses that are damaged, soiled, or misused.

The mattress is also backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal domestic use. This includes issues such as significant sagging (greater than 20mm), foam splitting, or faults with the cover and zipper.

Is this the right mattress for you?

The Onebed Original Mattress is a solid all-foam option that offers a good balance of comfort, support, and practicality. The adjustable firmness feature is a standout and represents a clear step up from earlier Onebed models, giving users genuine flexibility to fine-tune the feel to their preference.

Both firmness configurations perform well, with enough comfort and support for most sleepers, and the ability to switch between a slightly softer or firmer feel is a real advantage. Partner disturbance is also very low, which will appeal to couples or light sleepers.

While it doesn’t have the responsiveness or overall support strength of an innerspring mattress, it performs well within its category and price point. Overall, this is a well-designed foam mattress that delivers reliable performance and good value, particularly for those who prioritise adjustability and motion isolation.
