If you’re a stomach sleeper, here are some things to keep in mind before purchasing your new mattress.
Choosing a mattress for stomach sleepers
When deciding on the best mattress for stomach sleepers, it’s worth noting that a medium or medium-firm mattress is generally recommended.
Stomach sleepers will typically need a nice level of comfort for the front of the pelvis, the chest, and shoulders. A mattress that is too firm (in the front lying position) may cause unwanted pain and pressure through theses areas.
On the other hand, too much softness may result in poor spinal alignment and subsequent pain, muscle tightness, and restlessness.
Of course, the ideal firmness will vary between individuals.
A medium or medium-firm mattress is generally recommended for stomach sleepers.
Health professionals don’t often recommend stomach sleeping, as it requires the neck to be rotated (left or right) to allow for breathing. If the neck is rotated for extended periods, it may cause tightness, tension, and discomfort.
Whilst every person has a unique set of circumstances that influence sleeping position (personal preference, injury, surgery, health condition/s etc), most health professionals recommend side and/or back sleeping wherever possible. This is because the side and back position tend to encourage better spinal alignment during sleep.
Stomach sleepers should also be mindful of the type of pillow that they use. For those who like to sleep on their front, a medium or low height pillow is generally recommended. A pillow that we would recommend for stomach sleepers is the Sleep Republic Pillow (low profile option).
A pillow that sits too high may lift the head and neck into an unhealthy position. This may create pain and discomfort in the neck and shoulders.
How common is stomach sleeping?
As we alluded to at the beginning of this article, stomach sleeping (exclusively) is not common among Australians.
According to a recent Bedbuyer survey (of over 1,000 people) only 2% of Australians sleep exclusively on their stomach. Front sleeping is more common in combination with side sleeping (13%) and more common still when combined with side and back sleeping (19%).
A breakdown of sleeping positions in Australia can be seen below:
Stomach sleeping may be simply a preference of an individual, but front sleeping may be required when side or back sleeping is uncomfortable.
For example, side sleeping can create pressure on the hips or shoulders, so front sleeping may simply be a more comfortable position for some people.
It’s important to emphasise that the best sleeping position will be different for each person. This will depend on things like individual preference, mattress firmness, and back pain. Some health conditions or post surgical situations may even require a person to sleep in an upright sitting position.
To find what sleep position is best for you, it may come down to trial and error. Try out different sleeping positions to get a sense of what is best for you.
You may even find that unconsciously, you move into the most comfortable position in your sleep!
