The mattress was easy to remove from its packaging, and as usual, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box. Unpacking the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress takes 5-10 minutes, and we allowed 24 hours for the mattress to decompress before testing.
Aesthetically, the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress presents nicely with a modern and rather sleek appearance. It uses a black and white colour theme and you’ll find a classy product label at its base.
The mattress sits 30.5cm high which is about average height for an innerspring mattress.
The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress has a sophisticated construction that includes numerous comfort layers, a pocket spring system, and a perimeter reinforcement.
The top cover is made of a Polar Silk TENCEL™ fabric (1). This is noticeably cool to touch and is designed to help regulate sleep temperature.
This TENCEL fabric cover sits over multiple comfort layers that include a Graphite Crystal Latex (2), a HexaGrid Plus Comfort Layer (3), a layer of natural wool (4), a layer of ErgoCoil Micro-Precision Springs (5), and Cooling Cloud Memory Foam (6).
The Graphite Crystal Latex is designed to carry heat to deeper layers, helping to keep sleep temperature cool. The HexaGrid Comfort Layer is aimed at providing soothing comfort in all sleeping positions.
The addition of wool in the top section of the mattress may help to enhance cooling and comfort, and the ErgoCoil Micro-Precision Springs are included to maximise comfort and responsiveness.
The final ingredient in this top comfort layer is a layer of Cooling Cloud Memory Foam. This foam is infused with gel to help regulate temperature. It is also designed to increase pressure relief.
The main support structure of the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress is a 7-Zone ErgoCoil Support System (7). This spring unit has springs coiled at different tensions to provide optimal support (and comfort) for the head, shoulders, back, and hips.
As we touched on earlier, the mattress also includes a foam edge support layer (8). This is designed to strengthen the mattress perimeter and hopefully prevent the user from falling off the edge.
It’s worth noting also that the underside of the mattress contains a non-slip material. We didn’t find this mentioned in any product information, but the attention to detail shown by Origin here is impressive.
Comfort and support
The top cover of this mattress feels smooth, silky, and remarkably cool to touch. This may be relevant for hot sleepers in terms of heat minimisation.
The numerous comfort layers blend together well to create a supportive yet comfortable sleeping surface. The mattress absorbs body weight smoothly and it offers nice pressure relief in all sleeping positions.
To this point, the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, this suitability will vary between individuals.
Our team rated the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a highly rated bed base with rigid slats.
The 7-Zone ErgoCoil Support System feels stable and supportive. It should accomodate people of all sizes, but if you (or your partner) are particularly heavy, you may want to consider a more heavy duty mattress like one in the Yinahla range.
When it comes to partner disturbance, this mattress isolates motion very well. So, a restless partner shouldn’t be a problem. It’s worth noting though that larger mattress (e.g. king size) usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size (and weight) of the occupants of the bed.
The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress responds very well to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness as optimal. In other words, changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any problem.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The overall build quality and craftsmanship of the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress is very good. Although there were a few strands of fabric loose on our sample, the mattress itself feels well made.
The foam edge encasement is an example of the high level of quality throughout. Cheaper, inferior mattresses won’t typically have any perimeter reinforcements.
Edge support is reasonable but considering the added edge support, we felt that it could have been a little stronger. Nevertheless, users should be able to use all of the mattress surface during sleep, as well as for sitting activities.
The top cover of this mattress feels smooth, silky, and remarkably cool to touch.
The inclusion of side handles always scores points with our review team, and the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress doesn’t disappoint here. The 4 side handles feel sturdy and strong, and these will make it considerably easier to transport and rotate the mattress.
The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress is well certified as non-toxic. Its fabric components have been certified by OEKO-TEX, one of the most reputable fabric testing groups in the world. Its foam components have been certified by CertiPUR-US® – another highly regarded authority in product testing.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress to be used with a bed base with rigid slats (not flexible/posture slats) with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart.
A base that we would recommend to be used with the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress is the Chiropedic Bed Base.
It’s worth noting here that use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty. Furthermore, mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress comes with a 120 night trial period. This is slightly superior to the more typical trial period of 100 nights for many other beds in a box. This means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied (conditions do apply).
This mattress also comes with a 15 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is superior to the more common 10 year warranty among its competitors.
The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress is available in 5 Australian mattress sizes (single, king single, double, queen and king) so it should suit most sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2023.
The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress is an impressive product that has been cleverly designed. It comes with high levels of comfort and support, and sells at a competitive price.
