Purchase and delivery
As with other mattress in a box products, the Origin Hybrid Mattress can be ordered online (through the Origin website) and it will arrive at your door in a compact box. Origin offers free (and fast) delivery Australia-wide with orders being delivered within 1-10 business days.
Unfortunately our box arrived in poor condition (collapsed and broken). Nevertheless, removing the mattress from its box and packaging was fairly easy and, as usual, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box.
Unpacking the Origin Hybrid Mattress should only take 5-10 minutes, and we allowed it to decompress for 24 hours before testing.
Aesthetically, the Origin Hybrid Mattress has a simple and clean look. It sits 27cm high and uses a grey and white colour theme. It also includes a distinctive turquoise coloured brand label.
Mattress construction
The top cover of the Origin Hybrid Mattress consists of a 100% Tencel fabric (1). This feels soft and breathable, and may allow airflow to transfer body heat to the layers below.
The Tencel fabric cover sits over a comfort layer that includes a ‘HexaGrid Orthopedic’ layer (2), a layer of premium Australian wool (3), and a layer of natural bamboo foam (4).
This top comfort section sits over a pocket spring system that Origin calls ‘Antigravity Springs’ (6). The perimeter of the mattress includes polyurethane foam and a cotton blend (5).
Comfort and support
The top comfort layer of the Origin Hybrid Mattress feels foamy and offers nice pressure relief. It absorbs body weight well, even though there is a touch of hardness to it.
This mattress should suit all sleeping positions (back sleepers, side sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but this suitability will vary between individuals.
We would classify the Origin Hybrid Mattress as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the Origin Hybrid Mattress on the Naptime Base (a standard bed base with rigid slats).
The Antigravity springs in the Origin Hybrid Mattress offer good back support. As such, the mattress should accommodate people of most sizes and we certainly didn’t detect any undesirable sinking or sagging.
A single and king single Origin Hybrid Mattress can hold up to 100kg of total weight. A double mattress can accommodate up to 200kgs, and a queen and king size can accommodate up to 240kgs.
The Origin Hybrid Mattress responds nicely to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness as ‘optimal’. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The overall build quality of the Origin Hybrid Mattress is respectable and admirable in context of its price.
The mattress sits a little lower (27cm) than many of its competitors – many other bed in a box options sit over 30 cm high. With no specific perimeter reinforcements, edge support is not outstanding. With that said, it is still within normal limits for an innerspring mattress at this price point.
Origin omitted any side handles from its original design, but this new version includes two side handles on each side. This should make it much easier to carry, transport, and rotate the mattress.
It’s worth noting that this mattress uses some thin foam padding to cushion the feel of the springs on the side of the mattress. This foam is certified as non-toxic by CertiPUR-US®.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Origin Hybrid Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).
We do not recommend that this mattress be used with a bed base (with flexible slats). Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation may void the mattress warranty.
Furthermore, we do not recommend the Origin Hybrid Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this will also void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
The Origin Hybrid Mattress has a 120 night free trial period which means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied (conditions do apply).
The mattress also has an impressive 15 year warranty.
Available sizes
The Origin Hybrid Mattress is available in 5 sizes (king, queen, double, king single, and single size) so it should accommodate most sleeping situations.

Final verdict
Overall, the Origin Hybrid Mattress is a good buy, considering its level of quality and price point. It offers good back support, and comes with a solid trial period and warranty.
