Whilst you may already have a bed base, you may want to consider the following if are considering purchasing a new bed base.
Why is a bed base important?
There are a number of reasons why choosing the right bed base is important.
Mattress support
A good bed base provides the stable structure that your mattress sits on. This bed base should help to provide strong support for your mattress so that your mattress and base perform well over time.
Some bed bases do not provide adequate support for a mattress, and this may result in poor spinal support, and damage to your mattress.
We strongly recommend buying a bed base with platform slats or solid slats. Posture slats won’t usually provide adequate support for a mattress and may void your mattress warranty.
Bed height
A bed base will elevate your mattress to a more practical height. This will allow you to get in and out of bed more easily, and it also provides a handy sitting surface if need be.
Raising the height of your mattress can also make it easier to place items on, such as clothes, bags, and suitcases.
Ventilation
Although not commonly discussed, a bed base is also important as it helps to maintain airflow and ventilation throughout your bed.
This is important for healthy breathing and to help regulate a comfortable sleep temperature for the occupants of the bed.
Using your mattress on the floor is usually fine for short periods. Over time however, the poor air circulation may encourage the build up of moisture, mould, and bacteria (under the mattress).
Decor and storage
A bed base will add to the aesthetic appeal of your bedroom, making it an important piece of furniture in your home.
Bed bases come in a variety of colours, styles, and decor themes, so this will allow you to really personalise your sleeping environment.
Some bed bases also have handy storage features (e.g. drawers), so this also makes them a practical item in your bedroom.
How big is a king bed?
A standard, Australian king mattress is 183cm wide and 203cm long.
It is the second largest mattress size available, behind only a super king mattress.
As you can see from the graphic below, a king mattress is 30cm wider than a queen mattress, and 20cm narrower than a super king mattress.
Australian bed (mattress) sizes
It’s worth noting here that when you place 2 long single mattresses together, this is equivalent to the dimensions of a king size mattress.
Placing 2 long single mattresses together is common when using an adjustable bed base. King size adjustable bed bases are typically ‘split’ (in half) so that each user can adjust the position of the bed on their respective side.
The sleeping space provided by a king mattress is significant, and this comes with many advantages.
If you’re unsure about what mattress size is best for you, here is an in-depth discussion about Australian (bed) mattress sizes.
Why do people buy king bed?
King beds are popular today for a variety of reasons:
- They offer a large sleeping surface
- They help to minimise partner disturbance
- Extra space for pets! 🐶
- Co-sleeping with children
- Family activities (e.g. movie nights)
- To match bedroom decor (in larger bedrooms)
- Luxury accommodation (e.g. hotel rooms, suites)
Whatever the reason may be, there is no doubt that the huge amount of space offered by a king bed is appealing on many levels.
How popular are king beds?
According to a recent Bedbuyer survey of over 1,000 people, about 21% of Australians sleep on a king bed.
This is the second most common bed size after a queen bed, which is by far the most popular bed size in Australia (among adults).
What size bed do you sleep in?
Most mattress and bed bases on the market are available in a king size. So, purchasing a king size bed shouldn’t be too difficult.
What room size will fit a king bed?
As king beds are of a considerable size, we recommend that you measure your space carefully to ensure that a king bed will fit nicely into your bedroom.
Keep in mind also of the doorways, stairways, and corridors that you will need to walk through to place a king bed in your bedroom. There is not much point in buying a king bed if it doesn’t fit up the stairs!
A room size of approximately 3.2m x 4.2m is very suitable for a king size bed.
Here is a guide as to what bed size is appropriate for each room size.
BED SIZE | ROOM SIZE |
Single | 2.5m x 3.0m |
Long Single | 2.6m x 3.2m |
King Single | 2.6m x 3.2m |
Double | 3.2m x 3.4m |
Queen | 3.0m x 4.0m |
King | 3.2m x 4.2m |
Super King | 3.5m x 4.5m |
Please note that these room sizes are general recommendations and choosing a bed size (based on room size) will depend on personal preference in terms of sleeping space and bedroom floor space.
Room size recommendations will also depend on additional furniture (bedside tables, benches, chairs, sofas etc) that are placed in the bedroom.
The configuration of the bedroom in terms of wardrobes and windows will also influence what bed size is suitable.
King beds and partner disturbance
It’s worth mentioning that larger size mattresses (e.g. king size) will generally have less partner disturbance than a smaller size mattress (e.g. double size).
This is simply because movement has further to travel (on larger sized mattresses) and so disruption to your sleeping partner is less.
Partner disturbance is also influenced by other factors such as the type of mattress, the quality of the mattress, and the size of the occupants of the bed. Some foam mattresses have remarkably low levels of partner disturbance.
Not surprisingly, minimising partner disturbance is critical to sleep health and sleep quality. A mattress that reduces the effects of a restless partner is something to consider, and a king bed should certainly help to minimise motion transfer.
King beds and bedding
Many king bed mattresses sit relatively high (e.g. 36cm or higher). Some king size mattresses are over 40cm high.
If you are purchasing a king mattress that has a high profile, we would recommend purchasing some deep fit sheets (such as the Koala Deep Fit Sheets) as standard fitting sheets may not fit property.
As you may expect also, king size mattresses can be very heavy. If possible, we would recommend having two people available to help change the bed sheets on a king bed mattress.
Similarly, if you are rotating a king mattress, we suggest having 2 people available to assist. Our sleep experts recommend rotating your mattress every 3-6 months to maximise the life of your mattress.
So there you have it! We hope that our list of Australia’s best king beds helps you in your selection process.
