Purchase and delivery
As with other mattresses in a box, you can order the Ecosa Essence Mattress online (through the Ecosa website).
As mentioned above, this mattress can be ordered in a firm, medium, or plush option. We discuss these firmness options in our Comfort and Support section.
The Ecosa Essence Mattress can be delivered to almost anywhere in Australia. Ecosa offers next-day delivery to metro areas and a 1-7 business day delivery time to non-metro areas. For more details about delivery, see our Delivery information section further down.
Removing the Ecosa Essence Mattress from its packaging should take around 10 minutes. One person should be able to unpack smaller sizes of this mattress (e.g. single size), but for larger sizes (e.g. double size) we recommend having two people available.
In addition to the mattress, the box also includes an envelope with product information and a plastic cutting tool. A free mattress protector is another impressive addition in this package.
Keep in mind that there will be a fair amount of cardboard and plastic packaging to dispose of. So, some planning may be required in terms of bin space.
As per our standard testing process, we gave the mattress 24 hours to decompress before we conducted our testing.
In terms of pure aesthetics, the Ecosa Essence Mattress has a simple but clean appearance. It sits 22cm high and uses a green and white colour theme.
The mattress also has white coloured brand embroidery at the base.
Mattress construction
As we touched on above, the Ecosa Essence Mattress is an innerspring mattress with foam components.
1. Tencel Cover
The top cover of this mattress is made of an eco-friendly Tencel and recycled polyester. This fabric is breathable and skin-friendly.
2. Ergonomic Support Foam
Sitting under the top cover is a layer of bio-based polymer memory foam. This foam is comprised of 25% soy-based polyol and 75% polyurethane.
This foam has an open-cell structure to help promote airflow.
3. Five Zones of Pocket Springs
The support system of the Ecosa Essence Mattress is a high-gauge pocket spring system.
These springs are connected by ultrasonic quilting to reduce glue usage and help to deliver targeted support and disturbance-free sleep.
4. Reinforcement Base Foam
A strong base foam provides support to the pocket springs.
Comfort and support
The Tencel and recycled polyester cover feels lovely. In context of its price, it feels remarkably soft and luxurious.
The firm version of the Ecosa Essence Mattress is particularly firm and its level of comfort is minimal. This firm version would be best suited for back sleepers but this suitability will vary between individuals.
In terms of a specific firmness rating, our reviewers settled on a 9 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest), based on a majority vote.
Firm Version
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the Ecosa Essence Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.
The medium version of the Ecosa Essence Mattress is notably firm for a medium feel. Nevertheless, it has a reasonable level of comfort and absorbs body weight smoothly.
This medium version should suit back sleepers but again, this suitability will vary between individuals.
Our reviewers settled on a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest), based on a majority vote.
Medium Version
The plush version offers more comfort and pressure relief, but it’s worth noting that it is still relatively firm in context of its plush designation.
Our reviewers settled on a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest), based on a majority vote. Again, please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide.
Plush Version
Regardless of what firmness option/s you choose, the Ecosa Essence Mattress offers decent back support. The pocket springs aren’t the most sophisticated springs on the market, but they should provide good support and stability for most people.
Based on the quality of the pocket springs, we would expect this mattress to accommodate people of most sizes.
With that said, for those who are on the larger side though (over 100kgs), we would recommend a more robust innerspring mattress such as the Yinahla Posture Gel.
All firmness options of the Ecosa Essence Mattress respond well to normal sleep movements. As such, we rated the level of responsiveness of this mattress in the optimal zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
Responsiveness
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The build quality of the Ecosa Essence Mattress is commendable, when you consider its price. The quality of the foams and fabrics is respectable, as is the quality of the stitching and finishings.
As it is a particularly firm mattress, it’s likely that the plush option would be the most sensible choice.
This mattress isolates movement fairly well So, a restless partner may cause a little disruption during sleep.
With that said, motion transfer may vary. A larger mattress (e.g. double size) will usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.
As with many other Ecosa mattresses, the Ecosa Comfort Essential Mattress comes with side handles. These handles are positioned vertically to the mattress edge.
People with larger hands may struggle to fit their entire hand in each handle, but they will still make moving or transporting the mattress, easier.
Considering the relatively low height of this mattress (22cm), edge support isn’t too bad at all. So, the mattress perimeter should provide adequate tension during sleep and sitting activities.
The comfort foam in this mattress is certified by CertiPUR-US™ one of the world’s leading authorities in foam testing. The fabrics in this mattress are also certified with the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100.
These certifications reflect the fact that this mattress has been tested for harmful substances, and is safe for human use.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Ecosa Essence Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.
We don’t recommend the Ecosa Essence Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may cause damage to the mattress components. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
The Ecosa Essence Mattress comes with a 100 night trial period, which is a typical trial period in the online mattress market.
This trial period means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied (conditions do apply).
This mattress also comes with a 15 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This warranty is superior to a typical warranty period of similarly priced competitors.
Available sizes
This mattress is available in 5 sizes (king, queen, double, king single, and single) so it should accommodate most adult sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2024.
Final verdict
The Ecosa Essence Mattress is a serviceable mattress that should provide adequate levels of comfort and support for most people.
As it is a particularly firm mattress, it’s likely that the plush option would be the most sensible choice.
