A ‘latex mattress’ may have a small or large proportion of latex in its construction. Latex bedding products are becoming more common in Australian today.
There are are a number of ways that latex is used in mattresses. The most common way is as a layer in the top comfort layer of a mattress. Some mattresses on the other hand are comprised almost entirely of latex, and are often referred to as ‘full latex’ mattresses.

If you’re considering buying a latex mattress, here is some important information to consider before making your purchase.
What is latex?
Latex is a naturally occurring substance that is derived from the sap of rubber trees. Latex is used in many products such as pencil erasers, protective gloves, balloons, adhesives, and paints.
The process by which latex is collected from a rubber tree is called ‘rubber tapping’
Why buy a latex mattress?
Even though ‘traditional’ innerspring mattresses continue to dominate the Australian bedding market, latex mattresses come with a number of notable advantages.
Firstly, latex is a naturally durable and resilient material. Latex will generally maintain its shape and integrity for longer than synthetic foams. This means that latex mattresses won’t sag or dip like some foam or innerspring mattresses (that use foam).
As latex holds its shape well over time, latex bedding products usually offer good back support, a critical part of spinal health and good quality sleep. Depending on the density of latex used, latex is also comfortable with nice pressure relieving properties.
Sustainability is another big reason why many shoppers are drawn to latex mattresses these days. Latex is sourced from the sap of rubber trees and so is naturally biodegradable. Foam and innerspring mattresses take up huge amounts of space in landfill, and so come with a considerable amount of environmental impact.
What does latex feel like?
Latex mattresses usually offer a nice balance of comfort and support. They typically have a ‘rubbery’, dense feel that feels bouncy and responsive, quite different to the spongy feel of foam.
Full latex mattresses often contain several layers of latex with different densities. This helps to create a good balance of comfort and support throughout all body regions (shoulders, hips, and back).
Health and safety of latex
Latex is naturally non-toxic and doesn’t contain chemical additives. For this reason, full latex mattresses are often well-certified as non-toxic by reputable certification bodies.
It’s worth noting that some latex products have a unique, ‘rubbery’ smell, but this should dissipate over time.
A small proportion of people are allergic to latex. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, less than 1% of people are allergic to latex.
