Peacelily Mattress Review
The Peacelily Mattress (previously named the Fern Mattress) is made up of 100% natural latex, making it one of only a few mattress in a box products in Australia that doesn’t contain foam or springs. It is free of industrial chemicals and synthetic foams, and is highly certified as non-toxic.
Purchase and delivery
As with other mattress in a box options, the Peacelily Mattress can be conveniently ordered online through the Peacelily website, and it will arrive at your door in a box (see prices and delivery times below). Delivery is free and as you might expect, it doesn’t have the typical ‘new mattress’ smell that is typical of spring mattresses that use various foams.
The Peacelily Mattress presents with a distinct ‘natural and earthy’ vibe. This look was no doubt intended, considering Peacelily’s philosophy around health and environmental sustainability. This video below shows our the Peacelily Mattress is made.
Mattress construction
The Peacelily Mattress is covered with a layer of organic cotton that feels light, cool, and well-ventilated. The 100% natural latex mattress core feels solid and stable, and its open cell structure should allow for adequate ventilation.
It is worth mentioning that this latex is listed as ‘100% natural Dunlop latex’ which is tree-tapped from sustainable sources.
Customisation
The standard Peacelily mattress offers both a firm and a medium version, and each can be selected by simply flipping the mattress over. Peacelily also offers the Peacelily Mattress Topper, which can be purchased to create a plush (softer) version of the mattress.
Comfort and support
The firm version offers excellent spinal support, with no signs of sagging or dipping. It has a nice level of responsiveness and certainly isn’t hard or uncomfortable. Our team rated it as a ‘firm’ feel and a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Firm version
As you might expect, the medium version version feels softer and arguably more comfortable. It has a bit more pressure relief than the firm version, but spinal support is still excellent in all sleeping positions. As with the firm version, it feels well balanced and isn’t overly bouncy like some other latex products we have tested. Our team rated it as a ‘medium’ feel and a 6 / 10 on the firmness scale:
Medium version
The plush version (which requires the purchase of the optional Peacelily Mattress Topper) feels beautifully comfortable and luxurious. The topper is a must if you prefer your mattress soft and has the proverbial ‘cloud-like’ feel. Our team rated it as a ‘soft’ feel and a 4 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest):
Plush version
So with 3 different firmness options, the Peacelily Mattress comes with plenty of versatility. From experience, we would assume that most people would prefer the firm or medium versions, but of course the plush option is available if you so desire.
The finer details
As with most full latex mattresses, the Peacelily Mattress is quite heavy and difficult to manoeuvre, so make sure you have at least 2 people to carry it or flip it over. Having said that, the mattress has two strong handles on each side to help with any flipping or rotating – another indication of Peacelily’s attention to quality and detail.
The Peacelily Mattress comes with a market leading 25-year warranty.
The Peacelily Mattress appears to be durable and of high quality. Even though it has a relatively low height (22 cm), edge support is good for a non-spring mattress. It is worth noting that the topper will increase the mattress height to about 27 cm.
The Peacelily Mattress comes with a 100 night trial period and a market leading 25-year warranty, a strong indication of Peacelily’s confidence in its quality and durability.
Available sizes
This mattress is available in 6 sizes (king, queen, double, king single, long single, and single size) and is also compatible with adjustable bed bases. Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2020.
Final verdict
With all things considered, the Peacelily Mattress is a very nice mattress. Its 100% latex construction does make it unique in the bed in a box market, but it has a handy customisation feature and will be highly attractive to those who value their health and environmental sustainability.

Our products are handmade in our fully owned fabrication factory where we take care to produce the highest quality, most natural and luxurious products possible. The Peacelily Mattress is made with eco-INSTITUT and Oeko-Tex Class 1 certified, 100% natural Dunlop latex from tree-tapped and sustainable sources; GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and organic cotton wadding. These are the world’s leading independent emissions and material testing bodies, meaning our mattress meets some of the most rigorous natural standards.
Our non-toxic mattress contains only natural latex from Sri Lanka which provides some of the highest quality latex in the world… No synthetic latex, and no usage of common polyurethane and memory foams which can cause off-gassing. Natural latex is a natural resource with physical performance properties that far surpass memory foam and synthetic latex, providing the finest in natural cushioning together with perfect back support and extended durability. We even use natural latex glue to keep our 3 mattress layers together!
Natural Latex Rubber
Peacelily mattresses feature 100% natural Dunlop latex rubber foam, made from sustainably harvested sources. It’s an eco-friendly, high-performance material, offering resilience, durability, and temperature control that far exceeds synthetic, blended or petroleum-based polyurethane foams.
Natural Latex Glue
In order to keep our whole mattress natural and chemical free; we use natural latex to create a unique latex glue that is not only adhesive, but also chemical free. All 3 premium mattress layers in the Peacelily mattress are kept together with this strong glue, making it one of the most natural mattresses in the world.
Certified Organic Cotton
Our luxurious, handmade mattress covers are made with premium, certified organic cotton — one of the softest, most breathable and most comfortable fabrics available. It’s cool, wicks moisture and, better still, boasts the most stringent Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Certification.
Optional Peacelily Mattress Topper
For a luxury-plush feel, you can upgrade your mattress with a plush mattress topper, filled with an additional 5cm layer of 100% natural Dunlop latex rubber foam. Made to provide extra pressure relief and to give you a softer, more cloud-like comfort. At 27cm thickness, it’s ideal for side and back sleepers, athletes, and those wanting a more luxurious feel. If you feel pains and stress from firm mattresses, this is a match made in heaven.
Latex vs. Memory Foam
Latex is the future of healthy sleep.
More natural than its competitor, memory foam, our natural latex is made using only clean rubber sap that has been washed in fresh river water. In truth, memory foam is made to be warm; it is often used as insulation due to its heat-retaining abilities and uses your body heat to activate it’s compression capabilities. Whereas our latex has hundreds of pin holes to allow for easy airflow and cool sleeping. On average latex mattresses have 3-5 times less returns than memory foam mattresses. Latex has a 1-2% return rate compared to a 5-6% return rate with memory foam mattresses!
3 Firmness Levels
We have engineered the Peacelily Mattress so that there are 2 carefully selected firmness levels on the mattress for you to choose from. These firmness levels have been designed to suit your comfort preference no matter who you are. Just flip your mattress.
On the top side of the mattress there is a gentle medium comfort level (M symbol), and the bottom side has a firm comfort level (F symbol). The gentle medium is most suited for side sleepers, and the firm is most suited to back sleepers. Take your pick.
For a luxury-plush feel, you can upgrade your Peacelily mattress with a plush mattress topper, filled with an additional 5cm layer of 100% natural Dunlop latex rubber foam which the most customers prefer.
Heavy Duty Handles
Two upholstered handles adorn both side panels of the mattress, hand-sewn for a tight fit. (Many foam mattresses don’t even have handles.) Our handles will help you manage the movement of your latex mattress with greater ease. This makes swapping firmness levels hassle-free when flipping your Peacelily mattress.
Our aim was to make sure that our natural mattress provided the most luxurious comfort possible, by using the most perfect natural latex foam and comfiest organic fabric available. After many months of intense research and development, we were able to create a product that combined the highest performance, texture and aesthetic standards into one product. Our aim has been achieved and now you can sleep on your Peacelily Mattress knowing that you are spending a third of your life on the most natural, comfortable mattress possible.
Our manufacturer’s latex is certified by the eco-INSTITUT in Cologne, Germany, to be free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), persistent organic compounds, heavy metals, pesticides, formaldehyde and phthalates. Our fabric cover uses Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified cotton. And there are NO petroleum-based polyurethane foams, NO memory foams, NO chemical adhesives between the comfort layers, NO chemical fire retardants and NO ozone-depleting substances used.
Build for Durability
Every Peacelily Mattress has received an LGA Certification. The LGA Certification is administered in Cologne, Germany, and tests the functional performance for domestic use of a mattress. The test is conducted by putting 150 kg of force on the mattress and stroking the mattress 60,000 times. This test is meant to simulate, more than adequately, the normal domestic usage of a mattress. The passing grade for this certification is 50/100, and our Peacelily mattress has proven it’s quality and resilience by achieving a score of 99 points out of 100!
We use Dunlop latex in our mattresses because it is more eco-friendly than Talalay latex, which requires more processing. Our Dunlop latex is sourced from some of the world’s most eco-friendly and sustainable sources in Sri Lanka, and is eco-INSTITUT® certified (tested for hazardous materials and substances) by our latex manufacturer. Dunlop latex is naturally antimicrobial, cooler than memory foam, and also more durable than Talalay latex.
On our standard Peacelily mattress, we use three seamless layers of Dunlop latex — 5cm in the top comfort layer (gentle medium), a 10cm layer in the middle as a support core (base), and 5cm in the bottom comfort layer (firm). On the Peacelily mattress with the optional mattress topper, you get superior soft comfort with an additional 5cm of soft latex thickness onto the top comfort layer (luxury plush), and the option to remove this at any required time.
No blended or synthetic latex is used, there are no chemical fire retardants in any component of the latex cores, only 100% natural latex.
In order to keep our whole mattress natural and chemical free; we use eco-INSTITUT® certified natural latex to create a unique latex glue. This latex glue is very adhesive and passes the test of time, while remaining natural and free of harmful chemicals. It is comprised of the same compounds used within our natural latex core layers, with rubber sap being the primary component.
All 3 premium mattress layers in the Peacelily mattress are kept together with this strong glue, making it one of the most natural mattresses in the world. There are no chemical adhesives used between any of the comfort layers.
For a luxurious and premium finish, we use a breathable organic cotton / poly-blend with high density threading in a soft, natural colour. The surface fabric is 100% organic cotton keeping you directly in touch with only organic cotton fabric and the backing layer is polyester to maintain durability of the fabric. The fabric has been selected with a special request to remove any chemical bleaches, washes, dyes or patterns which are normally present in all mattress fabrics. This organic cotton fabric is GOTS-certified (the most stringent organic textile certification) by our supplier and provides 2cm in thickness to the Peacelily mattress.
The mattress includes hand-stitched tape edges (double stitched) to prevent tearing at the fabric corners and heavy-duty reinforced handles to ensure that the mobility of the mattress is much more manageable.
We use 100% organic cotton wadding to quilt together with our organic cotton fabric in order to give a luxury quilted cover for best comfort and extended durability. The organic cotton wadding is not chemically treated and chemicals are not used during the processing, leaving a natural creamy colour. This organic cotton wadding is GOTS-certified (the most stringent organic textile certification) and we receive transaction certificates for all of our material from our supplier.
The majority of quilted fabrics use polyester wadding together with their fabric, and as such our 100% organic cotton wadding in comparison offers the real luxury experience. We proudly source only the highest quality materials available and are confident you will feel this in your natural sleep experience. This material is perfectly suited for a natural mattress and allows for luxury comfort and breathability – the best of both worlds.

Hi
Could you compare the peacelily medium with the onyx medium?
Hi Vanessa,
The Peacelily Mattress and Silent Night Onyx Mattress are quite different.
The Peacelily Mattress is made from 100% latex which gives it a unique feel. Latex is typically very durable and we found the Peacelily Mattress (medium) very comfortable.
The Silent Night Onyx Mattress is a sophisticated pocket spring mattress that uses quality comfort materials in the top section. It is also designed specially for cooling.
You can read more about each mattress in our full reviews (linked above).
Hope that helps but would love to hear how you go!

Hello could you tell me why the Heveya pure latex mattress is so much dearer than the peacelily when they are both supposed to be all natural latex… $3000 difference!!
Hi Fiona,
Unfortunately we haven’t tested any of the Heveya latex mattresses so it’s difficult for us to comment on the price difference. One thing to keep in mind is that it appears Heveya have physical stores which can increase product prices. Peacelily is a 100% online company.
Hope that helps but please let us know how you go!
