Getting a good night’s sleep on a road trip is a big part of the journey. Being stuck with an old, uncomfortable mattress while you are away from home will certainly reduce the enjoyment of your trip.

Like with many purchases, there are a number of things to consider when buying a caravan mattress. Here is some useful information to help you, as you progress through your selection process.
Custom sizes and shapes
Contrary to popular belief, there isn’t a ‘standard caravan mattress’. Different caravans accommodate a range of different bed sizes with many set up to accommodate a queen or double size mattress.
Some caravans require a custom made mattress to fit with the internal design. Some caravan mattresses need to be made to specific dimensions, and some are made with cut or rounded edges (at the base) to allow more space to move around the mattress.
If this applies to your caravan, the mattresses listed above won’t be suitable.
Clark Rubber and Makin Mattresses are two popular companies that can make caravan mattresses to a specific size. If you do require a custom made mattress size, get in touch with either company to discuss your size and requirements.
What makes a good caravan mattress?
Light in weight
A caravan mattress should ideally be light in weight. For example, the Octasmart Plus Mattress is 20kgs (queen size) which is remarkably light, considering that a typical innerspring mattress (e.g. Sleep Republic Mattress) is around 50kgs.
A mattress that is light in weight will be easier to carry, which is important when placing the mattress in the caravan, or moving it around inside the caravan.
A light mattress also reduces the amount of weight of the caravan. This helps to reduce the ‘load’ on the car, as well as improving fuel efficiency.
Low height
As well as being low in weight, the best caravan mattresses are also low in height. The average height of a traditional innerspring mattress is around 30cm, so the Onebed Essential Mattress (20cm high) is a good example of a mattress with a low sitting height.
A low mattress height is ultimately space saving, and this will help to maximise the space of your caravan.
Comfort
It goes without saying, that a comfortable mattress is critical to your caravan experience. The last thing anyone wants is a hard, uncomfortable mattress which will reduce your sleep quality.
The Zeek Hybrid Mattress is lighter than your average innerspring mattresses, and has a relatively low height (25cm). It comes with plenty of comfort, making it a nice ‘all rounder’ when being used as a caravan mattress.
Well ventilated
It’s important for any mattress to be breathable and well ventilated, but this is especially true when considering a caravan mattress. This is because airflow in the small, convinced space of a caravan is limited.
A well ventilated mattress will help to regulate sleep temperature, and will help to minimise the growth of bacteria and dust mites that thrive in warm, humid environments. The Octasmart Deluxe Mattress is designed specifically for enhanced airflow, making it a very good option in the caravan mattress market.
