If you or your partner are on the heavier side, there are some important things that you need to consider before buying a new mattress.
What ‘type’ of mattress is best for heavy people?
The best type of mattress for a heavy person is a strong, innerspring mattress. An innerspring mattress includes a network of metal coils that should offer reliable back support over time.
Innerspring mattresses also provide responsiveness during sleep movements. This means that changing sleep positions will be easier, an important consideration for larger sized people.
Foam mattresses are generally not recommended for heavy people. Foam mattresses may cause overheating issues during sleep as the airflow and circulation is relatively poor.
The best type of mattress for a heavy person is a strong, innerspring mattress.
Furthermore, foam mattresses may not be suitable for heavier people in terms of durability. Even the best quality foams will deteriorate over time, and heavy occupants will likely accelerate the degradation of foam mattress components.
As you might expect, all of the mattresses listed above, are innerspring mattresses.
A good quality, innerspring mattress is best
A good quality innerspring system will be able to provide the necessary support for a heavy person over time. Mattresses will often have a maximum weight limit listed, and some of these weight limits have been noted above.
‘Good quality’ simply means that the spring system is strong and robust, and won’t struggle under the weight of heavy occupants. A good spring system should also accommodate for large weight differences between couples.
Sleep Republic‘s High Definition Spring System
A premium spring system should also isolate movement well, minimising partner disturbance. This is particularly relevant for couples, as larger people will create more partner disturbance than smaller sized people.
It’s worth mentioning here that a larger size mattress (e.g. king size) will have less partner disturbance than a smaller size mattress (e.g. double size). This is simply because movement has further to travel (on a larger size mattress) to disrupt your sleeping partner. Here are Australia’s full list of bed sizes.
Not surprisingly, minimising partner disturbance is critical to sleep health and sleep quality. Choosing a mattress that reduces the effects of a restless partner is definitely something to consider before making your purchase.
What firmness is best for heavy people?
As a general guide, we recommend a firm mattress for larger, heavier people. With that said, the correct mattress firmness will vary between individuals, so we always encourage you to seek out what firmness feels right for you.
One of the main reasons why a firm mattress is best for heavier people, is related to back support. A soft mattress may involve a heavy person sinking into the mattress, and this can result in a poor spinal position during sleep.
As you would expect, if the spine is not supported correctly during sleep, this can result in pain, muscle soreness, and restless sleep.
Another reason that firm mattresses are generally better suited for larger sized people is heat. Softer mattresses tend to use thicker layers of foam, which have a tendency to accumulate heat.
Heavy people often find that heat is a problem on softer mattresses, which isn’t surprising when you consider how a heavy body ‘sinks’ into a soft comfort layers.
What bed base should I use?
The type of bed base that you use with your mattress is very important, and even more so for larger sized people.
The bed base that you use with your mattress should be strong enough to support the weight of the mattress and the weight of the occupants of bed. The combined weight of a good quality innerspring mattress, and two heavier sized people, can easily be nearly 300kgs.
The best type of bed base for heavier people is a solid bed frame with fixed slats (not flexible/posture slats). These slats should ideally be no more than 8cm apart, to ensure that the mattress is supported correctly.
A few bed bases that we would recommend for heavy people include the Sleep Republic Pro Base or the Sleeping Duck Indestruct Bed (pictured above).
