How do I buy the Onebed Essential Mattress?

The Onebed Essential Mattress can be purchased online through the Onebed website, with orders processed securely and delivered directly to your home.

Shipping is free to most areas across mainland Australia and Tasmania, although some regional or remote locations may incur an additional fee. Any applicable charges are clearly displayed at checkout prior to purchase. Estimated delivery timeframes are also provided at this stage and will vary depending on your location and stock availability.

Once your order has been dispatched, you’ll receive tracking information so you can follow its progress. Delivery is made to your front door, and like most mattresses in a box, it arrives compressed and rolled for convenient handling.

Our sample arrived in fair condition, with the packaging providing adequate protection during transit. The box itself is fairly basic, using a plain brown cardboard finish rather than more premium-style packaging.

There is a moderate amount of packaging to dispose of, including cardboard and plastic. As with most boxed mattresses, we recommend allowing up to 48 hours for the mattress to fully expand before use.

What does it look like in real life?

The Onebed Essential Mattress has a clean, simple design that aligns well with its entry-level positioning. The white top panel contrasts with the deep navy sides, giving it a modern two-tone look that feels neat without being overly styled. Branding is minimal and tastefully applied, helping it maintain a tidy, unobtrusive appearance.

At around 25cm high, this is a relatively low-profile mattress. This slimmer build means it sits a little lower on the bed base and is less visually dominant in a bedroom setting. Overall, it presents as a practical, understated design that should blend easily into most spaces rather than stand out.

What’s inside the Onebed Essential Mattress?

1. Tencel® cover

The Onebed Essential Mattress is finished with a Tencel® cover, a soft and breathable fabric made from sustainably sourced wood pulp. It is designed to wick away moisture and help regulate temperature throughout the night, contributing to a cooler and drier sleep surface.

The material feels smooth to the touch and should suit those with sensitive skin, while also offering good durability. The cover is removable and machine washable, making it easy to keep clean over time.

2. Auralux™ foam

Beneath the cover sits the Auralux™ foam layer, Onebed’s proprietary material that aims to combine the contouring comfort of memory foam with the responsiveness of latex.

This layer adapts to the body to relieve pressure while maintaining a slightly responsive feel. It also performs better than traditional memory foam in terms of heat management, helping to reduce heat retention.

3. Cooling gel-infused memory foam

This layer adds further contouring and pressure relief, with cooling gel infusion designed to assist with temperature regulation.

It works to draw heat away from the body and disperse it through the mattress, helping to maintain a more consistent and comfortable sleep temperature.

4. Charcoal-infused support base

At the base of the mattress is a high-density, charcoal-infused foam support core. This provides the main structural support of the mattress, helping to maintain spinal alignment and overall stability.

The charcoal infusion may assist with moisture control and odour reduction, while the dense foam construction offers a firm and durable foundation for long-term use.

What’s it like to sleep on the Onebed Essential Mattress?

The top fabric feels smooth and reasonably breathable, while the comfort layers create a noticeably spongy, non-responsive feel that is typical of foam mattresses.

There is a slight “melting” sensation as the mattress absorbs body weight, even though it is not especially soft overall.

We rated this mattress at around a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest), placing it in the medium-firm range.

Firmness rating

This level of firmness should suit most sleeping positions, including side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers, although individual preferences will vary.

Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.

We tested the Onebed Essential Mattress on the Porto Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.

The charcoal-infused support base provides a reasonable level of support for most people. While it doesn’t offer the same level of strength or refinement as higher-end designs, it should be adequate for everyday use.

Heavier individuals (around 100kg or more) may benefit from a more robust innerspring mattress for long-term support, but for most users, back support here is acceptable given the mattress’s budget positioning.

As expected for an all-foam mattress, responsiveness is quite low. There is very little bounce, and the mattress tends to absorb movement rather than respond to it. While this can help with motion isolation, it may make changing sleeping positions feel slightly more effortful compared to more responsive mattress types.

What else should I know?

The overall build quality of the Onebed Essential Mattress is fairly basic, but still respectable when you consider its price point. It’s clearly positioned as a budget-friendly option rather than a premium product, but the materials and finish are in line with expectations for this category.

Unlike the Onebed Original and Onebed Max mattresses, this model does not offer adjustable firmness. It comes in a single firmness configuration, so there is less flexibility in tailoring the feel to individual preferences.

The overall build quality of the Onebed Essential Mattress is fairly basic, but still respectable when you consider its price point.

As with other Onebed mattresses, there are no side handles, which is a little disappointing. While the mattress itself is not especially heavy, handles would still make moving or rotating it more convenient.

Thanks to its foam construction, partner disturbance is very minimal. Movement is well absorbed, so a restless partner is unlikely to cause significant disruption during the night.

Edge support is within normal limits for a foam mattress, but it is not particularly strong. Some users – particularly heavier individuals – may find the edges feel a bit softer and may prefer to avoid sitting or sleeping right on the perimeter.

In terms of temperature regulation, foam mattresses can naturally retain more heat than innerspring designs due to reduced airflow. We did not notice any abnormal heat retention during testing, but those who tend to sleep hot may want to keep this in mind.

Bed base compatibility

What type of bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Onebed Essential Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.

A bed base with solid slats such as the Porto Bed Base, would also be very suitable.

Koala Paddington Bed Base

We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

Trial period and warranty

What happens if I don’t like it?

The Onebed Essential Mattress comes with a 125-night trial period, allowing customers to test the mattress at home and decide whether it suits their preferences.

To be eligible for a return, the mattress must be used for a minimum of 30 nights to allow for an adjustment period. If you’re still not satisfied, you can request a return within the 125-night trial window.

If a return is approved, Onebed will arrange for the mattress to be collected and typically donated to charity, provided it is in a clean and reasonable condition. Refunds are issued after the mattress has been collected. It’s worth noting that certain exclusions apply, including mattresses that are damaged, soiled, or misused.

The mattress is also backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal domestic use. This includes issues such as significant sagging (greater than 20mm), foam splitting, or faults with the cover and zipper.
