Onebed Essential Mattress Review
The Onebed Essential Mattress forms the entry level option in Onebed’s mattress range that also includes the mid range option Onebed Original Mattress and the flagship model the Onebed X Mattress.
Purchase and delivery
Just like other mattresses in a box, the Onebed Essential Mattress can be conveniently ordered online (through the Onebed website) and it will arrive at your door in a box (see delivery times in the ‘Delivery’ section below). Delivery is free, and our box arrived in good condition.
The Onebed Essential Mattress was easy to remove from its packaging, but we do recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box. Unpacking time was 5-10 minutes, and we allowed it to decompress for 24 hours before testing.
Comfort and support
The Onebed Essential Mattress has a comfort layer of 3 inches of cooling gel infused memory foam. This feels a little hard and dense initially but does soften as you settle in.
This mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.
Our team rated it as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and an 6.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
The support layer of this mattress is made up of 5 inches of high-density base foam. This should provide adequate back support for most, but its long term durability may not last other similarly priced innerspring mattresses.
This mattress also doesn’t have the natural bounce and responsiveness of many innerspring mattresses. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The overall build quality of the Onebed Essential Mattress is basic, but is about right for the price. Edge support is substandard, and the lack of side handles does make it difficult to carry.
One impressive aspect of this mattress is its 125 night trial period and a 10 year warranty. In context of its price, these represent market leading ‘back up’ durations.

This mattress is available in king size only so it should accommodate most bedroom arrangements.

What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Onebed Essential Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).
A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
