Newentor Hesperis Mattress Review
The Newentor Hesperis Mattress has a clever customisation feature that allows you to choose between several firmness options. The mattress has a number of foam layers in its construction along with a lovely, non-toxic cover.
The Newentor Hesperis Mattress makes up part of the Newentor product range that also includes the Newnetor Matratzen Topper and the Newentor Morpheus Pillow.
Purchase and delivery
As with other ‘bed in a box’ products, the Newentor Hesperis Mattress can be conveniently online (through the Newentor website), and it will be delivered to your door in a compact box. Our box arrived in good condition and was noticeably light in weight compared to other mattress in a box products we have received.
Delivery of the Newentor Hesperis Mattress is free and the mattress can be delivered Australia-wide (see delivery times below in our ‘Delivery’ section further down).
As per our standard testing process, we gave the mattress 24 hours to decompress before we conducted our testing.
Aesthetically, the Newentor Hesperis Mattress presents well with a warm and modern look. It has a relatively low height (22cm) and uses a grey colour theme. The subtle blue brand label gives it a nice touch.
Mattress construction
The Newentor Hesperis Mattress can be broken up into 5 distinct components.
1. Natural Coconut Cover
This mattress cover contains a coconut fibre and a bamboo fibre textile. These fibres may help with temperature regulation and the cover itself has been certified as non-toxic.
This cover feels smooth and breathable, and as we will discuss below, can be removed to allow for the flipping of the foam layers. Once removed, the cover is also machine washable (up to 30° C).
2. Gel-Visco Memory Foam 4cm
The first foam layer in this mattress is a 4cm layer of gel-visco memory foam. This is designed for pressure relief and to maintain a stable sleeping temperature. This layer forms the ‘medium’ feel configuration when placed on top.
3. High-Density Q-Stretch Foam 2cm
This second comfort foam layer forms the ‘medium-firm’ feel configuration when placed on top. It has a firmer feel to the gel-visco memory foam layer and feels more dense.
4. Highly Elastic Comfort Foam 16cm
This section forms the main support structure of the mattress. When placed on top, it formulates the ‘firm’ feel option. The foam section includes a unique ergonomic cutting process and 7 ergonomic pressure zones.
5. Anti-Slip Bottom
The underside of the mattress contains a grippy backing material that will help the mattress to stay in place. This anti-slip bottom should prevent movement of the mattress during sleep movements.
How does the customisation work?
The Newentor Hesperis Mattress has an innovative, customisation feature that allows you to choose what firmness level suits you best.
The separate comfort layer can be removed via a zip mechanism that is located at the underside of the mattress. This zip is fairly easy to use, but it may require some patience – we found that it worked better with a slow, gentle motion rather than a strong, forceful one.
Nevertheless, you can create a firm, medium-firm, or medium firmness by unzipping and rearranging the 3 foam layers. Once the main outer cover is unzipped, the foam layers then need to be removed from a thinner fabric sleeve.
Other mattress in a box options that include a similar customisation feature include the Koala Calm As Mattress, the Macoda Mattress, the Ecosa Mattress, and the popular Sleeping Duck Mattress.
Comfort and support
The medium version (with the blue, gel-visco memory foam on top), feels dense and spongy. It does absorb body weight smoothly, but its level of comfort may not suit everyone.
This configuration should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers), but understandably its suitability may vary between individuals.
In terms of firmness, our team rated this configuration as a 6.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
Medium Version
The medium-firm configuration (with the white, high-density Q-stretch foam on top), doesn’t feel as spongy as the medium configuration. Furthermore, it doesn’t absorb body weight as evenly as the medium feel option.
This medium-firm configuration should also suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers). Our team rated the medium-firm configuration as a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Medium-Firm Version
The firm configuration (with the yellow, highly elastic comfort foam on top) feels dense and hard. This set up would suit most back sleepers, but again this suitability will vary.
Our team rated the medium-firm configuration as an 8.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Again, please note that these firmness levels are just a guide.
Firm Version
All firmness configurations have a dense, firm feel and should provide good spinal support for most. Based on our testing, this mattress should accommodate people of most sizes, but larger people may want to consider a good quality innerspring mattress.
In part due to its foam construction, the Newentor Hesperis Mattress doesn’t have the natural bounce and responsiveness of many innerspring mattresses. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
In terms of build quality, the Newentor Hesperis Mattress is respectable but does lack the refinement of some other mattress in a box products. The quality of the fabric cover is sound, but some of the foam corners didn’t seem to decompress fully (even after many days of decompression).
Nevertheless, the foam components seem of good quality and the mattress is noticeably light in weight. This is worth noting as this should make rotating the mattress (and changing the bed sheets) fairly easy.
The zip mechanism works reasonably well if you need to flip the comfort layers. The ‘anti-slip’ bottom is a nice feature and should prevent any sliding or slipping of the mattress on your bed base.
A restless partner shouldn’t bother you too much on the Newentor Hesperis Mattress as the foam construction doesn’t involve significant amounts of motion transfer. This will depend though on the size of the mattress (e.g. king size) and the size of the occupants of the bed.
The foam components seem of good quality and the mattress is noticeably light in weight.
The lack of side handles was disappointing, as was edge support. In fairness, we wouldn’t expect the edge support to be super firm on a customisable, foam mattress.
The Newentor Hesperis Mattress comes with a solid 120 night trial period, which means that you can return the mattress for a full refund if you are not satisfied. The mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty, giving you plenty of peace of mind.
As we alluded to earlier, the Newentor Hesperis Mattress’ top cover is certified as non-toxic by OEKO-TEX, one of the world’s leading authorities in linen and fabric testing.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Newentor Hesperis Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).
A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.
Sleep Republic Pro Base
Furthermore, we do not recommend the Newentor Hesperis Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this will also void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
This mattress is available in all 7 sizes (super king, king, queen, double, king single, long single, and single size) so it should accommodate all sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2023.
Final verdict
The Newentor Hesperis Mattress is a decent foam mattress that is light in weight. Its customisation feature could be appealing to many, and its non-toxic fabric cover is a beauty.
