Purchase and delivery
Just like other bed in a box products, the Ecosa Mattress can be ordered online and will be delivered to your door in a compact box.
Ecosa does offer next-day delivery to major metro areas. With that said, delivery costs and times will vary depending on your location, so please see our Delivery Information section further down.
Unpacking the Ecosa Mattress should only take 5-10 minutes, and we allowed it to decompress for 24 hours before testing.
The Ecosa Mattress box arrived in excellent condition and is possibly the best quality box in the online mattress market. The box is also easy to manoeuvre, thanks to its sturdy wheels.
Included in the box is a welcome pack with an information brochure as well as a plastic cutter (to assist in the unboxing process).
The mattress was relatively easy to remove from its packaging and, as usual, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box.
From a visual perspective, the Ecosa Mattress has a modern, stylish appearance. It uses a grey and white colour theme with Ecosa’s distinct blue coloured brand label.
Mattress construction
1. Cooling Cover
The top cover of this mattress is consist of 40% Tencel fabric and 60% Premium poly cover. It is removable and washable and includes a strong zipper.
This cover is designed to keeps air flowing freely, and may help to regulate sleep temperature.
2. G-7 Gel Memory Foam
This layer of memory foam is infused with gel particles for desired temperature stabilisation.
3. ECO-Tex Memory Foam
This layer of memory foam has an open cell structure that has a bouncy and responsive feel (similar to that of latex). This layer of foam is designed to be durable and breathable.
4. Ergonomic Support Foam
The main base layer of this mattress is aimed at aligning the spine correctly and supporting pressure points.
It also helps to minimise partner disturbance.
One thing that is worth mentioning here is that the Ecosa Mattress no longer contains the (inner) waterproof cover.
Even though this was a practical feature of previous designs, it did produce a ‘paper-like’ consistency that may not have been to everyone’s taste.
How does the customisation work?
As mentioned earlier, one aspect of the Ecosa Mattress that makes it rather unique is its level of customisation.
What this means is that you can create a medium, medium-firm, or firm feel by unzipping the outer covers and rearranging the foam layers.
This adjustment process is best done with two people as the foam layers do require some careful positioning.
We will discuss the details of each configuration in the section below.
Comfort and support
The default configuration that the mattress arrives in is the ‘medium’ feel option. This involves the G-7 Gel Memory Foam on top, the ECO-Tex Memory Foam in the middle, and then the Ergonomic Support Foam on the bottom.
This configuration should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.
All of our expert reviewers agreed that this configuration has a ‘medium-firm’ feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Medium version
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the Ecosa Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.
The medium-firm option is set up with the ECO-Tex Memory Foam on top, followed by the G-7 Gel Memory Foam, and the Ergonomic Support Foam.
The configuration should also suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.
All of our expert reviewers agreed that this configuration has a ‘medium’ feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 6 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
So strangely, we felt that the medium-firm version was actually a bit softer than the medium version.
Medium-firm version
Finally, the firm option involves the configuration of the Ergonomic Support Foam on top, followed by the G-7 Gel Memory Foam, and then the ECO-Tex Memory Foam.
The configuration should suit most back sleepers but it may also suit some side sleepers and front sleepers.
All of our expert reviewers agreed that this configuration has a ‘firm’ feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Firm version
Again, our firmness ratings are just a guide.
The firm version, feels dense, spongy but more comfortable than previous designs of this mattress. The medium version has a nice mix of comfort and support and was our configuration of choice.
As noted above, the medium-firm version was the softest out of the three configurations. It has a spongy feel with a nice level of comfort. It seems to absorb body weight evenly.
All versions of the Ecosa Mattress support the spine adequately in all sleeping positions. Considering that it is a foam mattress, it has an impressive level of responsiveness.
To this point, we rated the level of responsiveness on the Ecosa Mattress as optimal. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
The finer details
The overall build quality of the Ecosa Mattress is very respectable. The materials, fabric, and stitching all appear to be of a good standard.
The Ecosa Mattress comes with practical side handles that are positioned perpendicular to the mattress edge. Although they are attached well, they don’t seem to be as strong as the handles on the Ecosa Align Firm Mattress.
As you might expect, edge support is best on the firmer configurations. With that said, edge support isn’t amazing and there is some edge sagging on the medium-firm version.
Nevertheless, edge support is within normal limits for a foam mattress.
The Ecosa Mattress is available in all 7 Australian mattress sizes.
The zip mechanism that removes the outer cover is smooth and works well. The zip pull is large and features an Ecosa brand label shaped into the metal.
Partner disturbance was noticeable, but certainly not significant. Still, it was more pronounced than one of its main competitors, the Koala Mattress.
The foams used in the Ecosa Mattress are certified as non-toxic by CertiPUR-US® and the washable cover is certified by OEKO-TEX®. These certifications are among the most reputable in foam and fabric testing.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Ecosa Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation may void the mattress warranty.
We don’t recommend the Ecosa Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
The Ecosa Mattress comes with a 100 night trial period, which is a typical trial period in the online mattress market. This means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied (conditions do apply).
This mattress also comes with a 15 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is a superior warranty period in context of similarly priced competitors.
Available sizes
The Ecosa Mattress is available in all 7 Australian mattress sizes (super king, king, queen, double, king single, long single, and single size) so it will suit all sleeping arrangements.
This is noteworthy, as the Ecosa Mattress is one of only a few beds in a box to offer the full collection of Australian mattress sizes.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2024.
Final verdict
The Ecosa Mattress is an admirable foam mattress that has a nice level of comfort. Its customisable design and non-toxic certifications give it extra appeal.
