Purchase and delivery
As with other mattresses in a box, you can order the Ecosa Kids Mattress online (through the Ecosa website).
The Ecosa Kids Mattress can be delivered to almost anywhere in Australia. Ecosa offers next-day delivery to metro areas and a 1-7 business day delivery time to non-metro areas. For more details about delivery, see our Delivery information section further down.
Removing the Ecosa Kids Mattress from its packaging should take around 10 minutes. One person should be able to unpack smaller sizes of this mattress (e.g. single size), but for larger sizes (e.g. double size) we recommend having two people available.
In addition to the mattress, the box also includes an envelope with product information and a plastic cutting tool. A free mattress protector is another impressive addition in this package.
Keep in mind that there will be a fair amount of cardboard and plastic packaging to dispose of. So, some planning may be required in terms of bin space.
As per our standard testing process, we gave the mattress 24 hours to decompress before we conducted our testing.
In terms of pure aesthetics, the Ecosa Kids Mattress has a simple but pleasant looking exterior. It sits 13cm high and uses a grey and white colour theme.
The mattress also has blue coloured brand label on the side.
Mattress construction
As we touched on above, the Ecosa Kids Mattress is an innerspring mattress with foam components.
1. Breathable cover
The top cover of this mattress is made of a premium Tencel™ fabric. This may help with temperature regulation through ventilation.
The 3D mesh side panels should also optimise airflow through the mattress.
2. Support Foam
Sitting under the Tencel fabric cover is a 1.5cm layer of CertiPUR-US certified, supportive (polyurethane foam). This foam should help to create an even weight distribution for proper spinal alignment.
Two layers of felt help to create some protection for this foam layer, from the pocket springs underneath.
3. Independent Pocket Springs
The support system of the Ecosa Kids Mattress is a pocket spring system. This system contains 406 independent springs with 10cm depth and 5 zones.
Moving independently, these pocket springs aim at providing optimal support for various sleeping positions and for children of all sizes.
4. Durable Base Cover
The bottom cover of the mattress is made of an eco-friendly (and durable), polyester material made from recycled plastic bottles.
Comfort and support
The Tencel fabric top cover feels soft and breathable and may assist with temperature regulation during sleep.
In terms of feel, the Ecosa Kids Mattress is particularly firm. This should suit many kids in terms of support, but it’s worth noting that there isn’t much comfort or pressure relief.
To this point, this mattress is best suited for back sleeping children, but understandably its suitability may vary between individuals.
When it comes to a specific firmness rating, all of our reviewers agreed that this mattress has an extra firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 9 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Firmness rating
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the Ecosa Kids Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.
The pocket springs on this mattress feel reasonably sturdy. The mattress should offer good back support for most children.
The Ecosa Kids Mattress responds well to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness in the optimal zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be much trouble.
Responsiveness
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The build quality of the Ecosa Kids Mattress is fair. The quality of the foams and fabrics is respectable, as is the quality of the stitching and finishings.
The Ecosa Kids Mattress is particularly firm.
If you do use this mattress for co-sleeping, the springs do transfer some motion during sleep movements. So, a restless partner may cause a little disruption during sleep.
With that said, motion transfer may vary. A larger mattress (e.g. double size) will usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.
As with many other Ecosa mattresses, the Ecosa Comfort Essential Mattress comes with side handles. These handles are positioned horizontally and are easy to use. Side handles will always make moving or transporting a mattress easier.
Due to the low height of this mattress, edge support is average. So, the mattress perimeter may not provide much strength during sleep and sitting activities.
As mentioned above, the support foam in this mattress is certified by CertiPUR-US™. one of the world’s leading authorities in foam testing. The fabrics in this mattress are also certified with the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100.
These certifications reflect the fact that this mattress has been tested for harmful substances, and is safe for babies and toddlers.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Ecosa Kids Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.
We don’t recommend the Ecosa Kids Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may cause damage to the mattress components. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
The Ecosa Kids Mattress comes with a 100 night trial period, which is a typical trial period in the online mattress market.
This trial period means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied (conditions do apply).
This mattress also comes with a 15 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This warranty is superior to a typical warranty period of similarly priced competitors.
Available sizes
This mattress is available in 3 sizes (double, king single, and single) so it should accommodate most adult sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2024.
Final verdict
The Ecosa Kids Mattress is a serviceable kids mattress but its level of comfort may not be adequate for some kids. Nevertheless, it provides good support and its materials are certified as non-toxic.
