The Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress is a rather unique mattress with a double sided design. This means that the mattress can be flipped over to produce at least different two firmness options.

This mattress forms the flagship model in Sleeping Puppy’s range that also includes the Sleeping Puppy Luxury Mattress.

Purchase and delivery

As with other mattress in a box products, you can order the Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress online (through the Sleeping Puppy website), and it will be delivered to your door.

Delivery of the Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress is free and the mattress can be delivered to almost anywhere in Australia. Sleeping Puppy offers an impressive ‘next-day delivery’ to major metro areas.

You can also select your preferred delivery date (up to three months in advance) during the checkout process, if you live in a metro area.

The box arrived in good condition and was noticeably heavy. With that said, the box does have handles and wheels to make transport a bit easier. The wheels can be removed to allow for recycling of the cardboard box.

The top handle is strong, but we had some trouble removing it to allow us to pull out the mattress. So, we needed to cut the handle out from the box which was a bit of a pain. Perhaps this is a small design detail that could be improved.

Inside the box, a plastic cutter is thoughtfully attached at the top of the box. The mattress comes packaged with plastic wrapping and also a nice carry bag (pictured above).

Removing the Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress from its packaging will take around 10-15 minutes. As always, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box.

As per our standard testing process, we gave the mattress 48 hours to decompress before we conducted our testing.

In terms of aesthetics, the Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress presents with a simple yet modern appearance. It uses a white and grey colour theme, and its brand name label gives it a nice touch.

Mattress construction

The Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress contains a number of components.

1. Top Notch Topper

The top cover of this mattress is a removable, machine-washable topper.

Crafted from super-soft, exceptionally durable 585 grams/m2 fabric sourced from Belgium’s BekaertDeslee, one of the world’s leading mattress fabric manufacturer.

This cover also boasts the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification. This renowned label signifies rigorous testing for harmful substances, ensuring utmost customer confidence and product safety.

2. Comfort Layer

Beneath the cover lies a gel-infused memory foam comfort layer, specially engineered to provide pressure relief whilst maintaining a cool sleep environment.

3. Transition Layer

This dynamic memory foam transition layer is designed to offer robust spinal support, absorbing body pressure and enhancing your sleep experience with its responsive, bouncy feel. This is aimed at creating effortless turning during the night.

4. Support Layer

While the top side offers exceptional comfort, the bottom side provides extra firmness, catering to those who may want to adjust their comfort levels at various stages of life.

How does the customisation work?

As well as a double sided design (where you can choose from a soft or firm option), the soft side allows you to customise the mattress even further by unzipping the top cover and rearranging the different foam layers.

We didn’t notice a huge difference in comfort or firmness but this feature still enhances the personalisation/customisation of this mattress.

Comfort and support

The soft side has a dense, spongy feel. Despite being the soft side, it does have some hardness to it that also feels somewhat uneven as you settle in to different sleeping positions.

In a similar way to the soft side of the Sleeping Puppy Luxury Mattress, we noticed some dipping, especially through the pelvis that may compromise spinal support.

This soft side should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers). Understandably though, this suitability may vary between individuals.

In terms of firmness, all of our reviewers agreed that this soft side had more of a medium feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 6 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Soft Side

Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.

Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.

We tested the Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.

As you would expect, the firm side is firmer, but we notice a huge difference in firmness between each side.

In a similar way to the soft side, there is a feeling of hardness and unevenness that isn’t as comfortable to sleep on as other mattresses that we have tested. We could also feel the springs a little through the top comfort layer.

This firm configuration should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers), but again its suitability may vary between individuals.

All of our reviewers agreed that the firm side had a medium-firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Firm Side

The spring system should offer good spinal support in theory, but the foam layers on each side may create some unevenness compromising back support.

With that said, the mattress has a weight capacity of 400kgs so it should also accommodate people of all sizes.

The thick foam layers in the Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress (especially on the soft side) mean that this mattress doesn’t have the natural bounce and responsiveness of some innerspring mattresses. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses.

Responsiveness

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.

The finer details

Regardless of comfort and support, the build quality of the Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress is very respectable. The quality of the stitching and finishings appear sound and there is evidence of attention to detail in its design.

The zip mechanism is strong and smooth, making it easy to remove and flip the foam layers (on the soft side). The foam layers themselves have a netted cover to (presumably) prevent the foam layers from sticking together.

Like with all mattresses, we tested partner disturbance thoroughly and surprisingly, this mattress doesn’t isolate movement well. Perhaps this is because of the double sided design, where the base section of the mattress is not stable – the bottom of the mattress is essentially a foam layer.

With that said, motion transfer may vary. A larger mattress (e.g. king size) will usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.

Unlike the Sleeping Puppy Luxury Mattress, this mattress doesn’t contain materials to specifically enhanced edge support. Edge support isn’t terrible though and there is some level of support during sitting.

The Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress has easy to use side handles that are vertically positioned. Side handles will always make moving or transporting a mattress easier.

The components of the Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress are well certified as non-toxic. As mentioned earlier, the cover features an OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified BekaertDeslee fabric that is free from harmful substances.

The Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress has a fairly high profile height of 36cm so you may need deep fitting sheets such as the Koala Deep Fit Sheets or the Ecoy Cooling Bamboo Sheets.

It’s also worth noting that the soft side cover is removable and machine washable on a cold, gentle cycle. Tumble drying is not recommended.

What bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.

A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.

Koala Paddington Bed Base

We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

Trial period and warranty

The Sleeping Puppy Classic Mattress comes with a 101 night trial period, which is a typical trial period in the online mattress market. This means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied.

It’s worth mentioning that there is a minimum 30 day adjustment period before you can request a return of Sleeping Puppy mattresses.

This mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is a typical warranty period in context of similarly priced competitors.

Do I need to be home to receive the delivery?

You may qualify for an ATL (authority to leave), if you can’t be home for your order, but please note that this usually applies to ground-level homes with secure places, not apartment buildings. Our courier will call you before delivery to confirm your instructions. For security reasons, couriers are not permitted to leave products in apartment building foyers.
