Nook Mattress Review
The Nook Mattress is a cleverly designed mattress that comes with a number of firmness adjustments. It also comes with a handy 180 night ‘sleep guarantee’ which allows you to exchange your mattress if you are not satisfied.
Purchase and delivery
The Nook Mattress can be conveniently ordered online through the Amart Furniture website. Fast delivery times are available to certain metro areas, but delivery times and costs will vary depending on your location. For more details, see our ‘Delivery’ section further down.
This mattress can also be purchased in-store at any Amart Furniture store throughout Australia.
The Nook Mattress can ordered in a number of sizes and configurations which will be discussed further down.
Our Nook Mattress box arrived in good condition, and was relatively straight forward to unpack. With that said, we always recommend having two people on hand to unpack a mattress a box. As usual, we allowed the mattress to decompress for 24 hours before testing.
In terms of appearance, the Nook Mattress presents well with a modern, contemporary style. It sits 33cm high and uses a white and grey colour theme, along with salmon coloured piping.
The blue coloured brand labels, also gives it a nice finishing touch.
Mattress construction
The Nook Mattress consists of 3 main components.
1. Sleep surface
The Nook Mattress starts with a top cover that is made of a breathable, 4-stretch knit fabric. This cover feels soft and smooth, and appears to be of good quality.
2. Comfort layer
The comfort layer of the Nook Mattress includes layers of memory foam and breathable foam. It also includes an ‘adjustable’ section called the Nook heart. This section allows you to choose between 3 different firmness options (firm, medium, and plush).
3. Support system
These comfort layers sit over a ‘Deluxe spring support’ system. This 5 zone pocket spring system comes with different zones of varying spring tension, to accommodate different parts of the body.
This spring unit feels stable and responsive and should accommodate people of all sizes.
How does the customisation work?
As mentioned earlier, the Nook Mattress allows you to select from 3 different firmness options – firm, medium, and plush. These foam inserts all come included in the mattress package, allowing you to choose the firmness option that you (and your partner) like best.
The ‘default’ configuration that the mattress arrives in, is the medium firmness (on both sides). To exchange for a firm or plush insert, you simply unzip the zip on the side of the mattress, take out the current insert, and slide the new one in.
This customisation has an interesting design, in that it only covers the upper and middle areas (shoulders, torso, and hips) of the body. This makes the inserts easier to exchange (compared to full surface foam inserts) but also makes sense as firmness changes are most important around the shoulders and hips.
It’s worth pointing out also that these firmness adjustments can be made on one side or both sides of the mattress. This allows you and your partner to choose different firmness options (e.g. firm on one side, soft on the other).
This customisation feature is rather unique in a few ways. Firstly, all of the firmness options are provided, so you won’t have to make special requests for extra foam inserts (like with the Sleeping Duck Mattress). This is mentioned in a promotional video below:
Secondly, the foam inserts are much easier to exchange as they only make up a proportion of the mattress. Some other firmness adjustments (e.g. Koala Mattress) require a full foam layer to be flipped over, which is far more cumbersome than the Nook customisation.
As with other ‘customisable’ mattresses, the Nook Mattress is suitable for those people who are particular about their mattress firmness, and is also for couples with different firmness preferences.
Comfort and support
The firm version is noticeably soft (and comfortable) for a firm feel, and certainly doesn’t feel rigid or hard.
This firm version should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but this suitability will vary between individuals.
We rated the firm version as a 6.5 / 10 on the firmness scale. Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
Firm Version
The medium version of the Nook Mattress feels spongy and foamy. It offers plenty of pressure relief and almost has a subtle sinking sensation.
This medium version should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but again, this suitability will vary between individuals. We rated the medium version as a 5 / 10 on the firmness scale (where 10 is the firmest).
Medium Version
The plush (soft) version also offers plenty of comfort, but we didn’t detect much difference in firmness between this plush option and the medium option.
This plush version should most side sleepers, but it may also suit back sleepers and stomach sleepers. We rated the soft version as a 4.5 / 10 on the firmness scale. Again, please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide.
Soft Version
Regardless of what firmness option/s you choose, the Nook Mattress offers reliable back support. The 5 zone spring system feels stable and well balanced, and should offer a good level of spinal support for all people.
All firmness options of the Nook Mattress respond well to normal sleep movements. As such, we rated the level of responsiveness of this mattress as optimal. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The overall quality and craftsmanship of the Nook Mattress is very respectable. Its outer cover feels durable, and the side handles are strongly attached.
The zip mechanism (that allows you to swap the foam layers) is smooth, and the adjustable layers are easy to rearrange – it almost reminded us of removing and inserting a CD into a car stereo.
Edge support is decent, so you should be able to use the full surface of the mattress, without the fear of falling off the edge.
In terms of partner disturbance, the spring system in the Nook Mattress isolates motion quite well. As such, a restless partner shouldn’t cause any problems, but this will depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.
All of the firmness options are provided, so you won’t have to make special requests for extra foam inserts.
The Nook Mattress offers a 180 night sleep guarantee. This means that you can exchange the mattress (for one of equal or greater value) if you are not satisfied. Keep in mind though that you will be responsible for transport costs, and the mattress must be returned in a clean and hygienic condition.
The Nook Mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Nook Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Chiropedic Bed Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).
A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.
The Nook Mattress is compatible with an adjustable (electric) bed base. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
The Nook Mattress is available in 3 sizes (king, queen, and double) so it should accommodate most adult sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2022.
Final verdict
The Nook Mattress is a rather impressive product that comes with a unique, customisable design. Its levels of comfort are also noteworthy.
