As the name suggests, the ‘next generation’ Macoda Mattress is a new and improved version of its origin version.

This new model was released in February 2024 and maintains its place as one of the most comfortable beds in a box in Australia.

Purchase and delivery

Like other mattress in a box products, the Macoda Mattress can be simply ordered online, and it will arrive at your door in a compact box. Delivery is free and shipping times are fast (see delivery times in ‘Delivery’ section below).

The mattress was relatively easy to remove from its packaging, but as usual, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box. With this in mind, it is still possible to unpack this mattress with one able-bodied person.

Unpacking the Macoda Mattress should only take 5-10 minutes, and we allowed it to decompress for 48 hours before testing.

The mattress presents with a rather funky appearance, using a characteristic white and royal blue colour combination. Its brand name embroidery also gives it a nice touch of class.

Mattress construction

The Macoda Mattress is made up of a number of parts and materials.

1. Cool-Touch Cover

This new signature cover is cool to the touch, and is designed to help you feel cool and refreshed from the moment you crawl into bed.

2. Graphene Memory Foam

This layer of body hugging memory foam is infused with graphene. This graphene can help to pull heat away from the body to keep you feeling fresh in head-to-toe comfort.

3. AirFlow Comfort Foam

This dreamy layer of air-blown foam is perforated for maximum breathability and a cushiony feeling of weightlessness.

4. Comfort-Adjust Support Layer

This layer of high density transition foam provides added support and comfort, while giving you the option to make your mattress firmer or softer for your perfect sleep.

5. Multi-Zoned Support

The main support system of the Macoda Mattress is a durable, 5 zone pocket spring system with twice tempered steel springs.

This spring unit is specially designed to provide varying degrees of support in different areas, gently cradling your shoulders and waist for correct spinal alignment.

6. Solid Edge Support

A border of extra firm springs and perimeter foam reinforce the full edge of the mattress, so you’re supported until the last centimetre.

How does the customisation work?

As mentioned earlier, one aspect of the Macoda Mattress that makes it rather unique is its level of customisation.

What this means is that you can create a number of firmness options by unzipping the outer covers and rearranging the foam layers.

This adjustment process is best done with two people as the foam layers do require some careful positioning.

We will discuss the details of each configuration in the section below.

Comfort and support

The default configuration that the mattress arrives in is the ‘medium’ feel option. This involves the graphene memory foam (medium side) facing up with the Air Flow Comfort Foam (soft side) facing down.

Additionally, the Comfort-Adjust Support Layer is sitting underneath the main foam layer.

This configuration offers nice pressure relief, and absorbs body smoothly. As you would expect, it has a comfortable, medium feel.

This configuration would most likely suit side sleepers, but it may also suit back sleepers, and stomach sleepers. Understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.

By majority vote, our expert reviewers settled on a 5.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Medium version

Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.

Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.

We tested the Macoda Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.

To adjust the mattress to the soft option, you simply unzip the cover, and flip over the main foam layer so that Air Flow Comfort Foam (soft side) is now facing up. The Comfort-Adjust Support Layer will still be positioned underneath the main foam layer.

This configuration offers plenty of pressure relief, and absorbs body smoothly. As you would expect, it has a soft, plush feel. This configuration would most likely suit side sleepers, but again, its suitability will vary between individuals.

By majority vote, our expert reviewers settled on a 4 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Soft version

To adjust the mattress to the firm option, unzip the cover, position the graphene memory foam (medium side) up with the Air Flow Comfort Foam (soft side) down.

The Comfort-Adjust Support Layer will now be placed on top of the main foam layer.

This configuration still offers nice pressure relief, and we didn’t notice a huge difference in firmness compared with the medium version. This configuration should suit all sleeping positions.

By majority vote, our expert reviewers settled on a 6 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Firm version

If you are not satisfied with any of these comfort options, you can contact Macoda and for an additional $100, you can request to purchase an ‘Extra Firm’ (Comfort-Adjust Support) Layer. As the name suggests, this allows for an extra firm version.

When this extra firm layer is placed on top of the main foam layer (graphene memory foam side up with the Air Flow Comfort Foam side down), the mattress has a firm, dense feel. With that said, there is still a reasonable amount of pressure relief.

This configuration should suit all sleeping positions, but again, this suitability may vary.

Even though this is the ‘extra firm’ version, our reviewers all agreed that it is more a ‘medium-firm’ feel. By majority vote, our expert reviewers settled on a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Extra firm version

All versions of the Macoda Mattress support the spine adequately in all sleeping positions. Considering that there are a number of foam layers, it has an impressive level of responsiveness.

To this point, we rated the level of responsiveness on the Macoda Mattress as optimal. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.

The finer details

The overall build quality of the Macoda Mattress is very respectable. The materials, fabric, and stitching all appear to be of a good standard.

The Macoda Mattress comes with practical side handles that are positioned vertically to the mattress edge. The handles are strong and easy to use, with plenty of space to fit your hands.

Edge support will vary depending on the configuration, but as you would expect, edge support is a bit soft in the soft version. Nevertheless, users should be able to use the entire surface of the mattress without fear of falling off the edge.

The zipper is strong and smooth, you just need to ensure that the foam layers are positioned correctly before you zip it up.

Partner disturbance is noticeable, but certainly not significant. So, a restless partner shouldn’t cause too much disruption.

With that said, motion transfer may vary. A larger mattress (e.g. king size) will usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.

The materials used in the Macoda Mattress hold numerous non-toxic certifications. These certifications include OEKO-TEX®, and CertiPUR-US.

These certifications are all issued by reputable testing groups that are world leaders in fabric and product assessment. This should appeal to many health conscious buyers.

What bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Macoda Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.

A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.

Koala Paddington Bed Base

We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

Trial period and warranty

The Macoda Mattress comes with a 100 night trial period, which is a typical trial period in the online mattress market. This means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied (conditions do apply).

This mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is also quite a typical warranty period in context of similarly priced competitors.

Available sizes

The Macoda Mattress is available in 5 Australian mattress sizes (king, queen, double, king single, and single size) so it should suit most sleeping arrangements.
