Purchase and delivery

As with other mattress in a box products, you can order the Koala Joey Kids Mattress online (through the Koala website), and it will be delivered to your door in a compact box.

Delivery of the Koala Joey Kids Mattress is free and the mattress can be delivered to almost anywhere in Australia. Koala also offers an impressive ‘same-day delivery’ to major metro areas. Please see delivery times in our Delivery information section, further down.

As well as the mattress, the box also includes a children’s bedtime story book – Rihanna the Goanna, a lovely touch by Koala.

Removing the plastic wrapping was easy and due to the mattress size, removing the packaging materials is manageable with one person.

As per our standard testing process, we gave the mattress 24 hours to decompress before we conducted our testing.

In terms of pure aesthetics, the Koala Joey Kids Mattress presents nicely with a natural, modern style. It uses a white and beige colour theme, and its brand name label gives it a nice final touch.

The product label on the zip pull is a fine example of Koala’s attention to detail.

Mattress construction

The Koala Joey Kids Mattress is an innerspring mattress that is made up of a number of components.

1. Zip-off Topper

The top cover of this mattress is made from 100% recycled polyester. This cover is removable and machine washable, making it easy to keep your child’s sleep surface clean.

The zip pull is large and easy to use. We didn’t notice any catching during the zipping process.

2. Water Resistant Inner cover

Underneath the zip-off cover lies a water resistant layer. This is made from 100% TENCEL™ lyocell fibre and 100% polyurethane.

This special layer will help to protect the mattress from spills or any night time accidents.

3. Mattress Core

The main body of the Koala Joey Kids Mattress consists of a layer of polyurethane foam (Koala’s Kloudcell™ foam) and tempered steel pocket springs.

The combination of foam and springs is designed to enhance comfort and support for growing spines.

3. Other Fabrics

All other fabrics used in this mattress are made from 100% polyester.

All Koala Mattresses also have an ‘anti-slip bottom’ that helps to reduce movement of the mattress when placed on a bed base.

Comfort and support

The Koala Joey Kids Mattress has a firm and supportive feel, very suitable for young children. With that said, the comfort layers should provide adequate pressure relief through the shoulders and hips.

The pocket springs in this mattress also provide a nice level of responsiveness and bounce.

The mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers), but understandably its suitability may vary between individuals.

In terms of firmness, our team rated this mattress as ‘firm’ and  as a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.

Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.

We tested the Koala Mattress on the Growbright Junior Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.

The pocket spring system in this mattress should provide good back support for any young child. The mattress should also accommodate the weight of most young children.

As we alluded to earlier, the Koala Joey Kids Mattress responds well to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness as optimal. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions should be easy for your child.

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.

The finer details

In terms of build quality, the Koala Joey Kids Mattress is respectable. The quality of materials and finishings appear to be of a decent standard, and the pocket springs feel reasonably strong.

It’s worth noting that the Koala Joey Mattress sits only 15cm high. This low profile design will suit bunk beds, trundles, and beds with guardrails. Of course, it can also be used ‘as normal’ on a bed base.

The zip mechanism is strong and smooth, so removing (and reattaching) the top cover shouldn’t present any difficulties. The ‘anti-slip’ bottom seems to be effective and should prevent any sliding or slipping of the mattress on your bed base.

This low profile design will suit bunk beds, trundles, and beds with guardrails.

Edge support is reasonable, so your child should be able to use the entire surface of the mattress, without fear of falling off the edge. With that said, if a heavy adult was to sit on the edge of this mattress, it may struggle.

It’s worth noting that the Koala Joey Mattress is highly certified as safe and non-toxic. It is certified with the OEKO-TEXⓇ Standard 100 certified and INPAA endorsed (child safety).

The Koala Joey Kids Mattress is also certified as non-toxic by another reputable group, CertiPUR-US®. This certification gives customers the reassurance that a product (or product components) has been tested for toxic chemicals such as mercury, lead, formaldehyde, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

Additionally, this mattress has foams with antimicrobial additives to  prevent the growth of mould and bacteria.

What bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Koala Joey Kids Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Joey Bed Base.

A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.

Koala Joey Bed Base

We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

Trial period and warranty

The Koala Joey Kids Mattress comes with a 120 night trial period, which is slightly superior to a typical trial period (of 100 nights) in the online mattress market. This means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied (conditions do apply).

This mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is a typical warranty period in context of similarly priced competitors.
