Emma Comfort Premium Mattress Review
The Emma Comfort Premium Mattress is a respectable mattress that is reasonably priced. It combines multiple foam layers with a pocket spring system and comes with a 100 night trial period.
The Emma Comfort Premium Mattress forms part of the Emma’s mattress range that also includes the Emma Comfort Mattress and the Emma Diamond Hybrid Mattress.
Purchase and delivery
As with other mattress in a box options, the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress can be conveniently ordered online (through the Emma website) and it will arrive at your door in a box (see delivery times in the ‘Delivery’ section further down). Delivery is free, and our box arrived in good condition.
The Emma Comfort Premium Mattress was relatively easy to remove from its packaging. As usual though, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box.
Unpacking the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress should only take 5-10 minutes, and we allowed it to decompress for 48 hours before testing.
The mattress comes with a handy cutting tool, as well as a handy product brochure that includes useful information about your purchase.
Aesthetically, the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress has a clean, modern look. It uses a grey and white colour theme with a blue brand label on the side.
Comfort and support
The Emma Comfort Premium Mattress includes an ‘Ultra-dry Elastic Cover’ (1), made predominantly of polyester (99%). This cover is removable and machine washable, and may help to regulate sleep temperature.
This cover sits over a layer of ‘Point-elastic Airgocell® Foam’ (2) that has a open cell structure to encourage good ventilation. Next is a layer of ‘Adaptive Visco-elastic Foam’ (3) that is aimed at providing targeted pressure relief.
This top comfort layer is quite pleasant and should offer ample pressure relief for most people. It should suit all sleeping positions (side sleeping, back sleeping, and stomach sleeping), but understandably this suitability will vary between individuals.
Based on our testing, our team rated it as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and an 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
You can alter the feel of this mattress by using the Emma Flip Topper (sold separately). This topper has a firm and soft side, so you can choose the firmness level that suits you best.
The main support section of the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress consists of a 5 zone AeroFlex® Pocket Spring system (4). This spring unit sits over a layer of Supportive HRX Foam (5).
Although we found it difficult to detect the different mattress support zones, the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress offers decent back support and responds well to normal sleep movements.
We rated the level of responsiveness of the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress in the optimal zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t require much effort.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
At just 31 kgs (Queen size) the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress is relatively light. This makes it easy to transport and also easy to change the bed sheets, which can be quite difficult with heavier mattresses.
As a comparison, the Eva Mattress (a popular innerspring mattress), weighs 55 kgs.
The relative light weight of the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress doesn’t compromise spinal support or general stability. This is rather impressive, and should appeal to those who desire a lightweight, supportive mattress.
At just 31 kgs (Queen size) the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress is noticeably light.
Edge support is respectable, so most users should be able to use most of the entire mattress surface without falling off the edge. The Emma Comfort Premium Mattress comes with practical side handles, making it easy to carry.
In regards to after-sale security, the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress comes with a solid 100 night trial period which is typical of an Australian bed in a box. The mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty, which is also very typical.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress to be used with a bed base with rigid slats (not flexible/posture slats) with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart.
A bed base that we would recommend to be used with the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress is the Sleep Republic Pro Base.
We do not recommend the Emma Comfort Premium Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty. Furthermore, mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
This mattress is available in 5 sizes (king, queen, double, king single, and single size) so it should accommodate most sleeping situations.
