Koala Calm As Mattress Review
The Koala Calm As Mattress was awarded Australia’s ‘Best Foam’ Mattress in a Box in 2023. It forms the mid range option in Koala’s new mattress range that also includes the entry level (New) Koala Mattress, and the flagship Soul Mate Mattress.
Please note that the Koala Calm As Mattress has been discontinued and is no longer available to purchase. It has been replaced with the Koala Plus Mattress.
Purchase and delivery
As with other mattress in a box products, you can order the Koala Calm As Mattress online (through the Koala website), and it will be delivered to your door. Due to the design of this mattress, it comes in two seperate boxes, one for the mattress base, and the other for the flippable comfort layer.
Delivery of the Koala Calm As Mattress is free and the mattress can be delivered Australia-wide (see delivery times below in our ‘Delivery’ section further down). Koala offers an impressive ‘same-day delivery’ to major metro areas.
Due to the ‘2 box’ delivery system, removing the Koala Calm As Mattress from its packaging may take more time (15-20 minutes) than ‘single boxed’ competitors. As always, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box.
The Koala toy was a nice touch, but we would have preferred a cutting tool, as removing the plastic wrapping was a little tricky compared with other bed in a box products that we have unpacked.
As per our standard testing process, we gave it 24 hours to decompress before we conducted our testing. You can see the Koala Calm As Mattress in ‘real life’ in our video review below:
In terms of pure aesthetics, the Koala Calm As Mattress presents nicely with a stylish, modern exterior. It uses a white and beige colour theme, and its brand name label gives it a nice finishing touch. The brand label on the zip puller is also a good example of Koala’s attention to detail.
Mattress construction
The Koala Calm As Mattress can be broken up into 5 distinct components.
1. Sleep surface
The seperate comfort layer is 7cm deep and also has a 1cm Quilted Plush Cover. The top cover of this comfort layer is made of Polyester (63%) and Polyester (COOLMAX® Fibre, 37%).
This cover has been specially designed for moisture absorption and cooling. It feels soft, durable, and breathable.
2. Comfort layer
This outer cover encases a double-sided Kloudcell™ comfort layer made from Polyurethane foam. This layer gives you the option to choose between a ‘medium-firm’ feel or a ‘firm’ feel.
3. Transition layer
The comfort layer sits over a ‘ZoneOut Transition Layer’. This section uses 3 targeted support zones to help disperse weight whilst providing lower back support.
This layer is also designed with special air tunnels, helping with airflow and temperature regulation.
4. Support layer
The main support structure of the Koala Calm As Mattress is a ‘NoPressure Adaptive Core’. This is designed to provide pressure relief, as well as a stable foundation regardless of your sleeping position.
All Koala Mattresses also have an ‘anti-slip bottom’ that helps to reduce movement of the mattress when placed on a bed base.
5. Edge support
This mattress also has a special perimeter structure to help with edge support, namely the ‘StayPut Edge Support’.
How does the customisation work?
The Koala Calm As Mattress has a handy customisation feature that allows you to choose between the two firmness options (medium-firm or firm).
The seperate comfort layer can be attached via small cylindrical clips that form the start of a zip mechanism. This zip is fairly easy to use, but it may require some patience and can get a stuck if the comfort layer isn’t properly aligned. You can switch between these different firmness options by unzipping and flipping this comfort layer.
This comfort layer comes with convenient tags (at the base) to indicate which side is firm and medium-firm. Flipping the comfort layer to change firmness can be done alone, but having two people on hand will make it easier.
Comfort and support
The medium-firm version feels comfortable and isn’t as foamy and spongy as the New Koala Mattress. It absorbs body weight smoothly and has plenty of pressure relief. Like many foam mattresses, it lacks the responsiveness of innersprings but it is still easy enough to move around in.
This configuration should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers), but understandably it will depend on each individual.
In terms of firmness, our team rated this configuration as a 6.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
Medium-Firm Version
As you would expect, the firm version is firmer, but we didn’t detect much difference at all between the two versions. The firm version also feels comfortable, and absorbs body weight smoothly.
This firm configuration should suit all sleeping positions, but again this will depend on the individual. It should offer enough comfort for most side sleepers.
Our team rated the firm configuration as a 7/ 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Firm Version
Both firmness configurations feel sturdy and well balanced. Spinal support is sound and the mattress should accommodate people of all sizes.
As we alluded to earlier, the Koala Calm As Mattress doesn’t have the natural bounce and responsiveness of many innerspring mattresses. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The Koala Calm As Mattress stands tall in the area of build quality. The zip mechanism works fairly well when flipping the comfort layer, and the ‘anti-slip’ bottom (100% Polyester with PVC dot) should prevent any sliding or slipping.
Motion transfer is minimal so you shouldn’t be disturbed by a restless partner. Of course, partner disturbance will depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.
The lack of side handles at this price point is disappointing, considering that side handles are present on many cheaper bed in a box products. Edge support is reasonable though, so you should be able to use the entire surface of the mattress without fear of falling off the edge.
The Koala Calm As Mattress has a 120 night trial period, meaning that you can return the mattress for a full refund if you are not satisfied. The mattress also comes with a handy 10 year warranty, giving you plenty of peace of mind.
It’s worth noting that the Koala Calm As Mattress is the first mattress (along with the others in the 2021 Koala Mattress range) to be fully GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia) certified. GECA certifications are based around human health, non-toxicity, and environmental impacts.
The Koala Calm As Mattress is also certified as non-toxic by CertiPUR-US®. This certification gives customers the reassurance that a product (or product components) have been tested for toxic chemicals such as mercury, lead, formaldehyde, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).
Additionally, all Koala mattresses have antimicrobial additives to prevent the growth of mould and bacteria.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Koala Calm As Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame with fixed slats (such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).
A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.
Furthermore, we do not recommend the Koala Calm As Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this will also void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

The Koala Calm As Mattress is a lovely mattress that has impressive levels of comfort and quality. It is highly certified as non-toxic and comes with a 120 night trial period.

If you’re in one of our same-day delivery areas (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth) you can select a delivery time that’s convenient for you. Outside of our same-day delivery areas delivery is still completely free. Your items will be shipped from our metro warehouses so delivery will take longer. You will receive your delivery in 1-10 business days.
All our furniture items are delivered by a courier up to your nominated delivery street address. For safety (OH&S) reasons our couriers are not allowed to enter your home, or carry the items up more than three flights of stairs. If you think you’ll struggle with the bigger or heavier boxes, we recommend inviting someone over to help.
Please note if you live in an apartment block, our drivers may not be able to take your items to your front door so you may have to meet them at the front. We hope you LOVE your new Koala product(s).
