This mattress does not come compressed in a box. Removing the BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress from its packaging (cardboard and plastic) should take around 10-15 minutes. As always, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress.
Keep in mind that there will be a substantial amount of packaging to dispose of. So, some planning may be required along with a fair bit of bin space.
Inside the packaging is a product information leaflet that includes care instructions.
In terms of pure aesthetics, the BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress presents well with a fairly dull, unremarkable appearance. It sits 29cm high which is a typical height of many innerspring mattresses.
Mattress construction
The BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress is an innerspring mattress that consists of several comfort materials and a Bonnell spring system.
1. Top cover
The top cover of this mattress is made of a BedGuard Damask ticking and quilting. This quilting includes 15mm of foam plus quilting paper.
2. Comfort layer
This foam layer is made of 40mm premium foam pads. As the mattress is double sided, this foam layer is located on both the top and bottom of the mattress.
3. Support system
The main support structure of this mattress is a Bonnell spring system. The springs are made from round, hourglass shaped springs, which are tied together.
A round helical crosswise connects each single spring to a spring unit.
Comfort and support
The top fabric cover of the BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress feels thick and rough, but to be expected when you consider its waterproof properties.
The comfort layers do provide some pressure relief, but its level of comfort would only be considered as adequate. This particularly feel gives off a ‘hospital bed’ vibe.
This mattress would be best suited for back sleepers but this suitability will vary between individuals.
When it comes to a specific firmness rating, all of our reviewers agreed that this mattress has an firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Firmness rating
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.
The mattress offers reliable back support, thanks to the strong Bonnell spring system. This is compromised in some way though with the over-responsive spring system. The spring system should accommodate people of all sizes, but users will have to contend with some unsteadiness.
As we touched on above, the BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress responds excessively to normal sleep movements. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) will involve plenty of movement from the mattress springs.
Responsiveness
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The build quality and craftsmanship of the BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress is respectable. The quality of the foams and fabrics is of a reasonable standard, as is the quality of the stitching and finishings.
The waterproof cover does seem to be effective and so would suit children or high risk spill environments. Liquid and water is easy to clean up with a cloth or paper towel.
Edge support is strong so users should be able to use the full surface of the mattress, without the fear of rolling off the edge. Furthermore, the mattress should accommodate sitting activities adequately.
In terms of partner disturbance, the spring system in the BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress does not isolate motion well at all. So, a restless partner will likely cause some disruption during sleep.
The waterproof cover does seem to be effective.
With that said, motion transfer may vary. A larger mattress (e.g. king size) will usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.
This mattress has a double sided design, which means that you can flip the mattress over if desired. Essentially, you can sleep on either side of the mattress which is a rare feature in today’s market.
The BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress does come with vertically positioned side handles. Side handles will always make moving or transporting a mattress easier.
It’s worth noting here that the BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress is Australian made. BedGuard is also an official provider to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
All BedGuard mattresses are flame retardant and comply with highest safety standards. BedGuard mattresses are also protected by Healthguard™. This produces an anti-bacterial and anti-dust mite sleep environment.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.
We don’t recommend the BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may cause damage to the mattress components. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
The BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress does not come with a free trial period or comfort guarantee. So, you cannot return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied.
This mattress does come with a 5 year guarantee to cover any faulty materials or workmanship.
Available sizes
The BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress is available in 5 sizes (king, queen, double, king single, and single size) so it should accommodate most sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2024.
Final verdict
The BedGuard Guardian Opulence Waterproof Mattress provides adequate comfort and support but its spring system is questionable in terms of motion transfer.
With that said, its waterproof and anti-bacterial properties should be appealing, particularly for children or the elderly.
