Purchase and delivery
How do I buy a Art & Science Kensington Mattress?
You can order the Art & Science Kensington Mattress online through the Sleeping Giant website, and it will be delivered to your door.
Delivery availability and fees vary depending on your location. These details can be confirmed on the product page or during checkout. For example, delivery to a Sydney metro address is currently priced at $129.
Our mattresses arrived wrapped in thick plastic covering, which protected them well during transit. Unpacking each Kensington Mattress should take around 5–10 minutes, and we recommend having two people available for setup.
Each mattress comes with an information booklet included in the packaging.
Aesthetics and Presentation
What does it look like in real life?
The Art & Science Kensington Mattress presents with a warm, inviting appearance. It features a white and beige colour scheme, with a product label and embroidered branding near the base.
Each firmness option has a slightly different height, but as an example, the Balanced Comfort version sits at 33cm. All options fall within the typical height range for a good quality innerspring mattress.
Mattress construction
What’s inside the Art & Science Kensington Mattress?
The Kensington is a hybrid mattress that combines advanced foams with a precision-engineered spring unit.
1. ChillTex™ & Cashmere Fabric Cover
The outer surface blends luxury cashmere with ChillTex™ cooling fabric. This cover uses hollow fibre technology to draw heat and moisture away from the body and is treated with Actifresh to help inhibit mould, bacteria, and dust mites.
2. Comfort Layers
Beneath the cover is a foam comfort layer, designed to provide cushioning and pressure relief. The exact foam configuration varies slightly between firmness levels.
3. Multi-Zone Pocket Spring System
The main support core features a high/low pocket spring design. Alternating rows of tall and short springs are arranged to offer varying resistance across different zones of the body. Each spring sits in its own fabric pocket to help minimise partner disturbance.
4. Edge Support Foam
A high-density foam box encases the spring unit, reinforcing the perimeter and enhancing edge support.
5. Air Vents and Handles
Metal side vents promote airflow through the mattress, helping it stay fresh. Two side handles are also included to assist with rotating the mattress when required.
Comfort and support
What’s it like to sleep on the Art & Science Kensington Mattress?
The top cover on all firmness options feels soft, smooth, and high in quality.
The Firm version feels firm but still noticeably comfortable, offering smooth pressure relief. This option should suit most sleeping positions — side, back, or stomach — though suitability will vary between individuals.
Our expert reviewers settled on a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Firm
We tested the Art & Science Kensington Mattress on the Soho Slimline Base, a good quality base with solid slats.
The Balanced Comfort version has a soft, cushioned feel and offers plenty of comfort. It’s quite soft for a medium option, but should still suit a wide range of sleeping positions.
Our reviewers rated this version at 5.5 / 10 on the firmness scale.
Balanced Comfort
The Extra Comfort version provides an abundance of pressure relief and would be best suited to side sleepers. Like many soft mattresses, this version may not offer sufficient spinal support for everyone and has a mild sinking sensation.
We rated it at 3 / 10 on the firmness scale.
Extra Comfort
The Extra Firm version feels very firm with a distinct sense of hardness. It would best suit back sleepers who prefer a sturdy, ultra-supportive sleep surface.
This version scored 9 / 10 on our firmness scale.
Extra Firm
Overall, the Kensington range leans soft — particularly in the Extra Comfort and Balanced Comfort versions. The Extra Firm stands out as being notably firmer than the rest, offering a strong contrast to the other options.
Back support will depend on the firmness level chosen. In our testing, the Balanced Comfort and Firm versions offered the most reliable back support for most people.
The spring system feels stable and supportive across all versions, and we would expect this mattress to accommodate sleepers of all sizes.
All firmness options respond well to normal sleep movements. We rated responsiveness in the optimal zone, meaning changing positions — or engaging in intimate activities — should feel easy and natural.
Responsiveness
Please note that our responsiveness scale is a guide only. Preferred responsiveness levels vary between individuals, but innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
What else should I know?
The overall build quality of the Art & Science Kensington Mattress is excellent. The foams and fabrics appear to be of a high standard, with neat stitching and attention to detail throughout.
The spring unit feels stable and well-engineered across all four firmness options, contributing to consistent structural integrity.
Although it’s an innerspring mattress, the Kensington isolates motion effectively. A restless partner is unlikely to cause major disruption during sleep, though motion transfer will still depend on mattress size and the weight of the sleepers.
Larger mattresses, such as king size, tend to absorb more movement. Partner disturbance will also vary depending on how much each person moves during the night.
The Kensington includes vertically positioned side handles on two edges. These are firmly stitched and useful when rotating or repositioning the mattress, though they may be a little narrow for larger hands. Still, it’s a practical inclusion that not all brands offer.
Edge support is strong across all firmness levels. The firmer versions offer slightly more resistance around the sides, but all options feel stable when sitting or lying near the edge.
The Kensington Mattress is treated with ActiFresh®, a hygiene treatment that helps inhibit odour, mould, and bacteria. The foams are also CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning they’re free from harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, VOCs, and heavy metals.

Bed base compatibility
What type of bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Art & Science Kensington Mattress be used on a bed base with flat panel slats, such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A base with solid slats (like the Chiropedic Bed Base) is also very suitable.
We advise against using a base with flexible (posture) slats, as these may not provide adequate support and could affect mattress performance. Using an unsupportive base may also void the warranty.
This mattress is not recommended for use with an adjustable (electric) bed base, as this could damage the internal spring unit and foam layers. For compatible options, you can view our list of adjustable base-friendly mattresses.
It’s worth noting that mattress firmness, feel, and durability can vary depending on the type of bed base used.
Warranty
What warranty does it come with?
The Art & Science Kensington Mattress comes with a 10-year warranty, which is standard for mattresses in this price range.
This warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship but doesn’t extend to normal wear and tear or damage caused by misuse. Be sure to keep your proof of purchase and follow the care instructions to maintain your warranty coverage.
Available sizes
What size options are available?
The Art & Science Kensington Mattress is available in five sizes — king, queen, double, king single, and single — so it should suit most bedroom setups.
The graphic below includes all of Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2025. Please note that the Kensington is available in five of these standard sizes.
Competitor Comparison
How does the Art & Science Kensington compare to other top mattresses?
Here’s how the Art & Science Kensington Mattress stacks up against some of its main competitors:
vs. Silent Night Onyx
Firmness options: Both mattresses offer a range of firmness options. However, the Kensington provides four distinct choices, while the Onyx is typically available in fewer variants.
Construction: Both use hybrid designs with pocket springs, but the Kensington incorporates a high/low spring system for more targeted support.
Cover: The Kensington features ChillTex™ with cashmere and ActiFresh®, while the Onyx uses a more conventional quilted top.
Edge support: Both offer solid edge reinforcement, though the Kensington’s high-density foam encasement provides a slight edge.
Trial & warranty: The Kensington has a 10-year warranty, but no trial period. Silent Night may offer in-store exchanges depending on the retailer, but no formal trial either.
vs. Sleeping Duck Mattress
Firmness options: Both brands offer firmness customisation, but Kensington provides four distinct options up front, while Sleeping Duck allows post-purchase customisation via a modular layer system.
Support: Sleeping Duck uses an interchangeable foam layer system over springs, while Kensington opts for an integrated hybrid design with multi-zone pocket springs.
Trial period: Sleeping Duck offers a 100-night trial; Kensington does not include a trial period.
Price: Sleeping Duck (queen) starts at $1,649. The Kensington (queen) sits at a lower price point, depending on firmness selection.
So, while established brands like Silent Night and Sleeping Duck have their own advantages, the Art & Science Kensington Mattress competes well with a solid hybrid design, strong support, and a unique four-firmness offering — all at a competitive price.
