How do I buy the AlphaBed Urban Mattress?
The AlphaBed Urban Mattress is listed on the Swan Bedding website, although there is no price displayed or option to purchase the mattress directly online.
It therefore appears that the mattress needs to be purchased through one of Swan Bedding’s retail stockists. Store locations can be found on the Swan Bedding website.
Our mattress arrived compressed and rolled inside a compact cardboard box, which was in decent condition on arrival. Due to the size and weight of the mattress, we’d recommend having two people available to assist with delivery, carrying, and setup.
Unpacking and setup were relatively straightforward. Once removed from its packaging, we allowed the mattress approximately 48 hours to fully expand before commencing our assessment.
Aesthetics and presentation
What does the AlphaBed Urban Mattress look like?
The AlphaBed Urban Mattress sits 29 cm high and has a fairly traditional mattress appearance, combining a white sleeping surface with contrasting grey side panels.
The top surface has a generously quilted finish with a subtle geometric pattern, while grey piping provides a neat border around the top layer. The side panels feature diamond-pattern stitching, along with a small orange Urban label that adds a subtle touch of colour.
Overall, the presentation is clean and understated. It doesn’t have an especially luxurious appearance, but the quilting and neatly finished side panels give it a solid and well-presented look.

What’s inside the AlphaBed Urban Mattress?
The AlphaBed Urban Mattress combines a quilted top surface with several foam comfort layers and a 20 cm pocket spring support system.
1. Knitted Top Fabric
The sleeping surface is finished with a soft knitted fabric with a quilted finish.
The fabric feels soft and breathable, while the generous quilting provides some initial cushioning across the sleeping surface.
2. Foam Comfort Layers
Beneath the top fabric sits a combination of gel memory foam, convoluted foam, and support foam.
These are designed to provide cushioning and pressure relief while creating a comfortable transition into the spring system below.
3. 3-Zone Pocket Spring System
The main support structure consists of a 20 cm, 3-zone pocket spring system.
The individually pocketed springs provide the main support for the mattress and respond independently to body weight and movement.
4. High-Density Foam Edge Support
The pocket spring system is surrounded by high-density foam edge support around the perimeter of the mattress.
This reinforced perimeter is designed to provide additional stability around the edges, helping to reduce excessive compression when sitting or sleeping near the side of the mattress and maximise the usable sleeping surface.
Comfort and support
What’s it like to sleep on the AlphaBed Urban Mattress?
The top fabric feels quite nice, with a soft and breathable finish that creates a comfortable initial sleeping surface.
The upper comfort layers have a distinctly foamy and spongy feel. They absorb body weight smoothly and provide plenty of cushioning and pressure relief, resulting in a comfortable overall feel. Heavier sleepers, however, may experience a little more sinkage into the comfort layers.
By majority vote, our team rated the AlphaBed Urban Mattress as 5.5 / 10 on the firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest.
Firmness rating
This firmness level should suit most sleeping positions, including side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers, although individual preferences will vary.

Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the AlphaBed Urban Mattress on the Naptime Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.
Overall, the pocket spring system provides a serviceable level of support and gives the mattress reasonable stability during use.
Heavier individuals (around 100kg or more) may want something more robust, but for the average sleeper, support should be adequate.
Responsiveness is also good. Despite the softer, spongier comfort layers, the mattress responds well to normal sleep movements without feeling excessively springy. To this point, we rated its responsiveness within the optimal zone.

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
What else should I know?
Overall build quality of this mattress is reasonable. While the AlphaBed Urban Mattress doesn’t have a particularly premium presentation, the materials, stitching, and general finish all seem fairly well executed.
Edge support is quite good. The high-density foam box surrounds the spring system and provides additional stability around the perimeter. This helps maximise the usable sleeping surface and should allow sleepers to use the mattress comfortably right up to its edges.
Unfortunately, there are no side handles. Considering the mattress uses a box-edge construction, we were a little surprised by their absence, as handles would make rotating and repositioning the mattress considerably easier.
There is some noticeable motion transfer between sleeping partners, which likely relates to the relatively responsive spring system. We wouldn’t describe partner disturbance as excessive, but movement across the mattress was certainly detectable during our testing.
As always, partner disturbance will vary depending on the size of each sleeper and the mattress size.
In terms of temperature regulation, we didn’t detect any unusual heat retention during our assessment. Sleeping temperature is influenced by a range of factors beyond the mattress itself, but we didn’t identify any obvious concerns in this area.

Bed base compatibility
What type of bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the AlphaBed Urban Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats would also be very suitable.
According to Swan Bedding, slats should be no more than 80 mm apart and should be at least 30 mm thick. Queen and King size mattresses also require adequate centre support.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. It’s important to note that mattress damage caused by an incorrect or inadequate foundation is not covered by the mattress warranty.
We don’t recommend the AlphaBed Urban Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may cause damage to the mattress components. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
What happens if I don’t like it?
The AlphaBed Urban Mattress does not come with a trial period, so customers should make sure they’re comfortable with their purchase before committing.
It is covered by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty against faulty workmanship and materials under normal use.
The warranty covers broken or loose springs or wires, springs or wires that protrude through the fabric, and defects in workmanship or materials.
For this Euro top mattress, body indentations must be greater than 35 mm to be considered a warranty issue. Normal body impressions and comfort concerns resulting from product selection are not covered.
It’s also important to use a suitable bed base. Swan Bedding specifies that slats must be no more than 80 mm apart and at least 30 mm thick. King and queen mattresses also require adequate centre support.
Transportation costs associated with a warranty claim are not covered.

Should I buy the AlphaBed Urban Mattress?
Overall, the AlphaBed Urban Mattress is a serviceable innerspring mattress that performed reasonably well across our testing categories.
There were no major weaknesses identified during our assessment. Its foamy comfort layers provide good pressure relief, while the pocket spring system offers a reasonable level of support and responsiveness.
It doesn’t have the premium feel or refinement of some more expensive mattresses, but it should provide enough comfort and support for most people.
Overall, the AlphaBed Urban Mattress is a nice all-rounder that gets the basics right.
