Onebed Original Mattress Review
The Onebed Original Mattress is a ‘firm and dense’ feeling mattress that uses a combination of foams and latex. Its customisation feature allows you to select 3 different firmness options to suit your preference.
The Onebed Original Mattress forms the mid range option in Onebed’s mattress range that also includes the entry level Onebed Essential Mattress and the flagship model the Onebed X Mattress.
Purchase and delivery
As with other mattress in a box products, the Onebed Original Mattress can be simply ordered online, and it will arrive at your door in a compact box (see prices below). Delivery times are fast, and the box arrived in excellent condition. We allowed it to decompress for 24 hours before we started our testing.
The mattress presents with a simple and modern vibe. It uses a white and blue colour combination along with a brand name tag.
Mattress construction and customisation
The cover of this mattress consists of a woven polyester cover that feels soft and thick. It is also removable and washable, making it easy to keep clean. This cover sits over a comfort layer of Dunlop latex and high density memory foam.
As we mentioned earlier, the Onebed Original Mattress is ‘customisable’, meaning that you can adjust the firmness of the mattress by switching these latex and memory foam layers. This is demonstrated nicely in Onebed’s video below:
The ‘default’ configuration that the mattress arrives in (latex on top) feels firm and dense, but still seems to absorbs body weight smoothly. If you prefer a slightly more soft and spongy feel, the configuration with memory foam on top is the one to go for.
Switching the foam layers may require two people, especially in larger mattress sizes (queen and king). The zip mechanism is reasonable strong and each comfort layer has a protective covering of fabric, reducing the friction between layers.
Comfort and support
Although each configuration ‘feels’ slightly different, in terms of ‘firmness’ we didn’t really detect much difference. Both versions lack the responsiveness of ‘spring’ mattress in a box products, (e.g. the Onebed X Mattress) and generally speaking, this mattress is not as comfortable as many of its competitors.
All configurations should suit most back sleepers, but they may also suit side sleepers and stomach sleepers. As you would expect though, this suitability will vary between individuals.

The main support structure of the Onebed Original Mattress is an 18cm deep layer of high density polyurethane foam. This base layer is relatively light in weight, but still feels sturdy. This base layer can also be placed on the top layer to give a third firmness option.
We rated this configuration as a ‘firm’ feel and an 9 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest):

The Onebed Original Mattress offers good spinal support in all configurations, and we didn’t notice any obvious sinking or dipping.
This mattress doesn’t have the natural bounce and responsiveness of many innerspring mattresses. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
Overall build quality is reasonable, but it doesn’t have the refinement of other products in this category. It doesn’t have side handles (to assist with carrying) but with that said, edge support is good for a foam mattress.
The Onebed Original Mattress offers good spinal support in all configurations.
It’s also worth noting that the Onebed Original Mattress comes with an impressive 125 night trial period and a 15 year warranty.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Onebed Original Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).
A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

The Onebed Original Mattress is a decent option in the online mattress market for those who like a firm, dense feel. It offers good spinal support and is well backed with a solid trial period and warranty.
