The review below focusses mainly on the mattress, but a discussion about the bed base is also included.
Testing details
The Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed was tested thoroughly over an 11 night stay at the Sofitel Adelaide Hotel in late February and early March, 2023. The bed was assessed in Room 2301, a Prestige Suite that included a king size bed.
The two mattress reviewers included an average sized male (in his 40s) and an average sized female (in her 30s). The review process followed Bedbuyer’s standard testing procedures.
Upon arrival and first inspection, it was noted that the mattress was covered with a soft mattress topper (100% cotton cover with a 90% feathers, 10% down filling). For the purposes of this review, the mattress was tested with the topper on and the topper off.
The Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed (without topper) sits approximately 33cm high and has a brand name label at the base.
Aesthetically, the Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed is rather uninspiring and unremarkable. The top cover contains a commonly used stitching pattern and the side fabric uses a typical Sealy design.
To our knowledge, this mattress cannot be purchased by the public. This is in contrast to the Crown Hotels Mattress that can be bought through Crown Gifts.
Mattress construction
Information relating to the construction of this mattress is not available specifically. However, we have made some assumptions about the materials used, based on the testing (and specifications) of other Sealy mattresses.
The Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed contains a fabric cover that is likely designed for breathability and ventilation. This may help to reduce moisture and reduce the growth of dust mites, fungi, bacteria, and other allergens.
This cover sits over layers of comfort foams and a commonly used Sealy spring system, most likely a system of offset springs. Offset springs include a metal coil on which its top and bottom ends have been flattened and cut.
Offset springs
As we touched on above, the sides of the mattress are covered with a layer of fabric with a circular and diamond shaped pattern. The underside of the mattress is finished with a yellow coloured rigid fabric.
Comfort and support
The top cover of this mattress feels breathable but otherwise is not particularly sophisticated. As much as the fabric quality is adequate, it doesn’t exhibit the level of quality that is typical of expensive, luxury mattresses.
The foams used in the top comfort layer also feel basic and unsophisticated. The foams provide reasonable pressure relief, but body weight is not absorbed smoothly and we did notice a distinct unevenness in all sleeping positions.
Generally speaking, the Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed should accommodate all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, this suitability will vary between individuals.
Our reviewers rated the Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed as a medium feel and a 5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
Without Mattress Topper
As discussed earlier, the mattress was fitted with a mattress topper that added an additional layer of softness to the mattress. When used with this topper, this mattress has a noticeable soft, sinking feeling.
We were a little unsure as to the rationale behind the addition of this topper. For short-term guests (with little mattress knowledge), this may create a perception of a luxurious, cloud- like feel. However, back support is compromised, and it won’t be suitable for the many who prefer a firmer, more supportive mattress.
Alternatively, the mattress topper may have been used to ‘hide’ the questionable levels of comfort and support underneath.
Nevertheless, our team rated the Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed with the mattress topper as a ‘soft’ feel and a 3.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Again, please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
With Mattress Topper
The spring system used in this mattress felt particularly unstable and flimsy, and resembles many cheap Sealy mattresses that we have tested. The level of back support offered by this spring unit was below average, and it would likely struggle under the weight of larger sized guests.
In terms of partner disturbance, this mattress also performs poorly. The spring system does not isolate motion effectively, so any movement can easily be felt across the entire mattress. As such, a restless partner will be a problem on this mattress – certainly not ideal for guests who are looking for a good night’s sleep.
It’s worth noting that when it comes to partner disturbance, larger size mattresses (e.g. king size) will usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.
The Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed does not respond well to normal sleep movements. As such, we rated its level of responsiveness as rather excessive. In other words, changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) will likely involve unwanted movement.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The bed base
The Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed uses a bed base that appears to be a traditional box spring construction. Box springs typically involve excessive movement and may explain some of the instability and high levels of partner disturbance.
According to the website Hotel Management, the external fabric used on the bed base was fully tested by Sealy’s Research and Development team in Brisbane to ensure it met standards for strength and durability.
One thing that was evident about the bed base is that it did not contain support structures along its sides. Considering that most bed bases do contain these reinforcements, it was surprising that these were omitted.
Overall though, the bed base appeared to be reasonably stable and well made. The bed base sat on castor wheels which did make it relatively easy to move around.
The finer details
The general build quality and craftsmanship of the Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed is lacklustre, especially when you consider that this bed is used in one of Adelaide’s most distinguished hotels.
Quite simply, the fabrics and foams feel cheap, as do the finishings. We wouldn’t say that the materials are of premium quality, rather very average.
The general build quality and craftsmanship is lacklustre.
The mattress sits approximately 33cm high, a common height for an innerspring mattress. Combined with the bed base, the overall height of the bed should allow a comfortable entry and exit for most people.
The lack of side handles won’t be relevant for guests, but will make transport more difficult during installation and removal. The lack of side handles on a mattress usually reflects cost reduction practices, and a lack of focus on product usability.
We are unsure as to whether or not the Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed comes with any non-toxic certifications. Many mattresses on the market today include components (foam and fabric) that have been tested for harmful substances.
It was noted though, that the mattress topper was certified as non-toxic by by OEKO-TEX®. OEKO-TEX® is one of the world’s leading authorities in fabric testing.
We didn’t detect any obvious foam encasement around the sides of the mattress. As a result, the springs can be felt through the sides of the mattress. This usually indicates the presence of cost cutting and may compromise the strength of the mattress perimeter, also referred to as edge support.
With that said, edge support is reasonable and within normal limits for an innerspring mattress.
Warranty
We are unsure as to what warranty (or after-sale service) that Sealy included in their arrangement with Accor.
Most good quality mattresses today come with a 10 year warrant to cover any faulty materials or workmanship.
Available sizes
Depending on what type of room guests select, the Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed is available in 3 Australian mattress sizes (king, double, and presumably single sizes).
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2023.
Final verdict
Based on the quality and prestige of the Sofitel Adelaide, the Sealy Accor Sofitel My Bed is a particularly disappointing bed system. The spring unit is especially poor and one could only question Sealy Commercial as to why such a substandard mattress was approved for use in this hotel.
Our stay at the Sofitel Adelaide was otherwise, first-class.

Recommendations
- Removal of mattress toppers from all Sealy Accor Sofitel My Beds at the Sofitel Adelaide (but still offer the soft topper as an option).
- Consider a good quality, more supportive topper such as the Emma Flip Topper.
- Strongly consider replacing the mattress and base in all rooms (within the next 12-24 months) with expert consultation.
