Purchase and delivery
As with other mattresses in a box, you can order the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress online, through the Mellow website.
Delivery of the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress is available Australia-wide.
Orders for Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne Metro areas will be delivered within 1-2 business days. Delivery times for other locations will vary but an estimated arrival time will be provided once your order has been placed.
Removing the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress from its packaging should take around 10-15 minutes. As always, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box.
Keep in mind that there will be a substantial amount of packaging (cardboard and plastic) to dispose of. So, some planning may be required along with a fair bit of bin space.
As per our standard testing process, we gave the mattress 24 hours to decompress before we conducted our testing.
Included in the box is a product information card, 2 pillows (compressed with plastic wrapping), and a mattress protector.
In terms of pure aesthetics, the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress presents well with a stylish, modern appearance. It sits 30.5cm high which is a typical height of an innerspring mattress.
The mattress has a light blue, navy blue, and white colour theme, along with brand name embroidery at the base of the mattress.
Mattress construction
As mentioned above, the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress is an innerspring mattress. It consists of multiple comfort layers and a pocket spring system.

The top cover of this mattress is made of a breathable knitted fabric (OEKO-TEX® certified).
2. Cooling Foam
Sitting directly under the top fabric cover is a layer of cooling gel infused foam. This layer is included to resist body heat and conform to the shape of your body.
3. High-density (HD) Support Foam
Sitting under the cooling gel infused foam layer is a layer of high-density (HD) support foam.
4. 7 Zone Spring System
The main support system of this mattress is a 7-zone spring system. This is designed to provide softness and support to the shoulders, hips, and knees.
This spring system contains individually wrapped steel coils for pressure relief as well as customised spinal alignment, and reduced motion transfer.
Comfort and support
The top fabric cover of the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress feels smooth and fairly cool to touch. It also feels breathable so it may help to regulate sleep temperature.
The comfort layers of the mattress feel dense and spongy, with a slight hardness as you initially settle into your sleeping position.
With that said, there is plenty of pressure relief in the top layer. There is actually a slight sinking feeling in certain positions.
The mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but this suitability will vary between individuals.
When it comes to a specific firmness rating, all of our reviewers agreed that this mattress has a medium feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 5.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

We tested the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.
The mattress offers reasonable back support, and the spring system feels sturdy and responsive. We would expect this mattress to accommodate people of most sizes.
The Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress responds well to normal sleep movements. As such, we rated the level of responsiveness of this mattress in the optimal zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The build quality and craftsmanship of the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress is admirable. The quality of the foams and fabrics is of a good standard, as is the quality of the stitching and finishings.
The fabric around the sides of the mattress feels durable, even though you can feel the springs through the sides.
Edge support is commendable so you should be able to use the full surface of the mattress, without the fear of rolling off the edge. The mattress should also accommodate sitting activities quite easily.
In terms of partner disturbance, the spring system in the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress isolates motion very well. So, a restless partner shouldn’t cause any problems.

With that said, motion transfer may vary. A larger mattress (e.g. king size) will usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.
One minor design flaw of the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress is the lack of side handles. Side handles will always make moving or transporting a mattress easier, so this is something that Mellow could consider for a future product refinement.
It’s worth noting here that the foams used in the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress have been certified by CertiPUR-US®. This certification indicated that the foams are free of harmful chemicals and heavy metals.
The top fabric cover is also certified as non-toxic by OEKO-TEX®.
The 2 pillows that came with our queen mattress were both comfortable and should satisfy most people.
In any case, both pillows are a handy addition to this mattress and add to the value proposition that this mattress offers.
The mattress protector that was included with the mattress is also very serviceable.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.
We don’t recommend the Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may cause damage to the mattress components. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
The Mellow Cooling Hybrid Mattress comes with a 365 night trial period, which is far superior to a typical trial period duration (100 nights) in the online mattress market.
This trial period means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied. Naturally, conditions do apply.
This mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is also a typical warranty length of many online mattresses.
