Kmart Mattress Review
Due to Kmart’s huge popularity in Australia, the Kmart Mattress is an attractive option for those looking for a budget-priced mattress. In reality though, this mattress is hugely deficient in almost all areas. There are certainly better options in this price bracket (see further down).
Purchase and delivery
The Kmart Mattress falls into the ‘mattress in a box’ category and can be ordered online through the Kmart website. It cannot be ordered ‘click and collect’ style so online orders will be delivered (see delivery fees in our ‘Delivery’ section below). It is also worth noting that the Kmart Mattress is only available for sale in NSW, QLD, WA, and VIC.
The mattress was reasonably easy to remove from its packaging, and took 5-10 minutes to unpack. As usual, we gave it 24 hours to decompress before we conducted our testing.
Visually, the Kmart Mattress looks rather basic. It uses a white and grey colour theme and doesn’t exactly ooze class or refinement. Nevertheless, it does have a clean, simple design.
Comfort and support
The top comfort layer of this mattress is made up of a stretch knit fabric, memory foam, and a quilt foam padding. This does provide a ‘reasonable’ level of comfort and pressure relief (considering its price), but from here it all starts going bad for the Kmart Mattress. Like, really bad.
Beyond the comfort layer is a Bonnell spring system which feels excessively bouncy and unstable. You can actually feel the springs ‘pop’ under your body during normal movements, or when sitting. As you can imagine, overall spinal support is poor and finding a comfortable position to lie in is almost impossible.
Our team rated it as a ‘medium / firm’ feel and a 6.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
The Kmart Mattress responds excessively to normal sleep movements. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) will involve abnormal levels of mattress movement.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
As you’ve probably guessed, the overall build quality of the Kmart Mattress is poor. Edge support leaves much to be desired, so sitting on the mattress edge won’t feel stable.
The mattress isn’t suitable for heavier people either. The spring system seems to struggle even with normal sized people. All of this is to be expected though, considering it is literally a fifth of the price of many other mattress in a box products.
The Kmart Mattress also has an excessive level of partner disturbance, about as bad as any mattress that we have tested. This again exposes the lack of quality in the spring system, and it’s here that this mattress really shows its price.
Despite a seductive low price, the Kmart Mattress is simply awful.
The Kmart Mattress does not hold any eco-friendly or ‘non-toxic’ certifications. This is worth noting when you consider that most other reputable mattress in a box products have been certified by groups such as such as GECA and CertiPUR-US.
This mattress does not have a trial period option like most of its competitors, but it does offer a 5 year warranty. This length of warranty is actually pretty good in context of the product’s price and quality.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Kmart Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).
A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.
Furthermore, we do not recommend the Kmart Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this will also void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
The Kmart Mattress is available in 3 sizes (queen, double, and single).

Final verdict
Despite a seductive low price, the Kmart Mattress is simply awful. It is loaded with deficiencies and is severely lacking in comfort and support. As you will see below, there are better options available in this price bracket.
