Purchase and delivery
As with other beds in a box, the Emma Zero Gravity Mattress can be conveniently ordered online (through the Emma website) and will be delivered to your door in a compact box.
Emma offers free delivery, Australia wide. Next day delivery is available to some metro areas, whereas regional customers will have to wait 2-7 business days to receive the mattress. For more details, see our ‘Delivery information’ section further down.
The Emma Zero Gravity Mattress was easy to remove from its box. In fact, the top of the box was refreshingly easy to open with logical folds and layers as opposed to strong tape and glues with most other beds in a box.
As usual, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box. Unpacking the Emma Zero Gravity Mattress should only take about 10 minutes, and we allowed it to decompress for 48 hours before testing.
Included in the box is a handy cutting tool to assist with the unpacking process.
Aesthetically, the Emma Zero Gravity Mattress presents well with a modern, stylish design. It uses a grey and white colour theme, with yellow piping and a yellow zip mechanism. Brand name embroidery can also be found at the base.
The mattress sits 25cm high which is slightly below average height for an innerspring mattress. Nevertheless, this is still within normal limits.
Mattress construction
The top cover of this mattress is called the Emma UltraDry™ Breathable Cover (1). This cover is soft and smooth to touch, and is highly breathable. It is also removable and washable, making it easy to keep your sleep surface clean.
This top cover sits over a layer of Point-elastic Airgocell® Foam (2), an Innovative AirGrid Layer (3), and a layer of Comfort HRX Foam (4).
The Point-elastic Airgocell® Foam is an advanced technology, designed to enhance breathability and temperature regulation. The Innovative AirGrid Layer is a new, hyper-elastic technology that instantly adapts to movement and provides special comfort for pressure points.
The Comfort HRX Foam is an ergonomically designed foam layer that adapts to your body by evenly distributing body pressure, regardless of your build or sleeping position.
These comfort layers mentioned above, sit over a system of AeroFlex® Pocket Springs (5). Each individually encased steel pocket spring dynamically adapts to body movement whilst providing good breathability.
The base and sides of the mattress include a layer of Supportive HRX Foam (6). This layer adds additional support by providing superior counter pressure.
Comfort and support
The Emma Zero Gravity Mattress is relatively firm with a spongy and responsive top layer. It absorbs body weight nicely and is a slightly more comfortable version of the Emma Diamond Hybrid Mattress.
The mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, this suitability will vary between individuals.
Our team rated the firm version of the Emma Zero Gravity Mattress as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the Emma Zero Gravity Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.
The AeroFlex® Pocket Springs feel stable yet responsive, and should provide good back support. This spring system should also accommodate people of all sizes.
The mattress isolates movement quite well, so partner disturbance shouldn’t be a problem. It’s worth noting though that larger mattresses (e.g. king size) usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size (and weight) of the occupants of the bed.
The Emma Zero Gravity Mattress responds nicely to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness in the optimal zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The overall build quality and craftsmanship of the Emma Zero Gravity Mattress is sound. The stitching and finishings are of a high standard, and the foams and fabrics feel durable.
The mattress comes with 4 side handles, 2 on each side of the mattress. This will make it easier to rotate and transport the mattress, adding to its usability. The side handles feel strong and are large enough to fit your entire hand in.
Edge support is reasonable, so you should be able to use the entire surface of the mattress without the fear of rolling off the edge.
The zip mechanism that allows you to remove the outer cover, is impressive. The zip pull is large with a prominent Emma labelled tag, and the zip is smooth and easy to use.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Emma Zero Gravity Mattress to be used with a bed base with rigid slats (not flexible/posture slats) with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart.
A base that we would recommend to be used with the Emma Zero Gravity Mattress is the Chiropedic Bed Base.
We do not recommend the Emma Zero Gravity Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may cause damage to the mattress. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that use of an unsupportive mattress foundation may void the mattress warranty. Furthermore, mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
The Emma Zero Gravity Mattress comes with a 150 night trial period – superior to a typical trial period offering of many beds in a box. This means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied. Naturally, conditions do apply.
This mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is also a typical warranty period of similarly priced products.
Available sizes
The Emma Zero Gravity Mattress is available in 5 sizes (king, queen, double, king single, and single size) which should suit most sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2024.
Final verdict
The Emma Zero Gravity Mattress has a fancy construction, and these components combine well to produce a well rounded mattress. Considering it is a mattress in a box though, its price point may be an issue for many.
