At the surface is a silky-soft organic knit cover made with 20% organic content. The fabric is enhanced with ChillTex™ technology for natural cooling and ActiFresh® hygiene treatment, helping guard against odour, bacteria, and dust mites while keeping the sleep surface feeling fresh and dry.
2. WoolCloud™ Quilted Comfort Layer

The extra firm Somerset delivers a very firm, almost hard feel with minimal cushioning through the comfort layers. It maintains its shape exceptionally well and provides a strong sense of resistance from the surface.
This version is most likely to suit back sleepers who specifically want an unmistakably firm sleeping surface, although comfort will ultimately depend on individual body type and preferences. For most sleepers, it will likely feel too firm.

The Art & Science Somerset is a very well-made mattress, with a clear focus on build quality and craftsmanship. The stitching, finishing, and material selection all feel premium, and overall it’s difficult to fault the construction across the range.
Mattress height varies slightly depending on the firmness option, which is quite normal given the differing comfort layer thicknesses. The extra comfort version measures approximately 35cm, the balanced comfort sits at 33cm, while both the firm and extra firm versions measure around 31cm in height. As expected, the softer options have a taller profile due to thicker comfort layers.
All versions are fitted with two vertically positioned side handles. While these handles are relatively compact, they are strongly stitched and securely attached, making rotating or repositioning the mattress much easier. We place a high value on these handles, as they demonstrate attention to detail and greatly improve day-to-day usability.

Edge support is very good across all four firmness options. Even the extra comfort version maintains respectable edge stability, while the firm and extra firm options provide particularly solid edges. Partner disturbance is also well controlled throughout the range, with the pocket spring system isolating movement effectively. As always, the amount of movement felt will vary depending on mattress size and the sleepers using it.
The Somerset range also carries several important non-toxic and safety certifications. The foams used are CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning they’ve been tested for harmful chemicals and emissions. The mattress also features ActiFresh® antibacterial treatment for hygiene protection, and OEKO-TEX® certification, confirming that the fabrics have been tested for harmful substances.

Bed base compatibility
What type of bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend this mattress to be used with a bed base with solid slats (not flexible/posture slats), such as the Atlantis Bed Base.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation may void the mattress warranty.
