The Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress is a great value foam mattress that has a remarkably cool top cover. It uses certified non-toxic foams and comes with a 10 year warranty.

Purchase and delivery

As with other mattress in a box products, you can order the Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress (through the Zinus shop page on Amazon), and it will be delivered to your door in a compact box.

Delivery cost of the Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress will depend on your location and we assume that the mattress can be delivered Australia-wide (even though this is not specified on Amazon).

This mattress was fairly easy to remove from its packaging, but as always, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box. As per the product recommendation, we gave the mattress 72 hours to decompress before we conducted our testing.

The mattress comes with an information booklet which was a nice touch, but unfortunately a cutting tool (for the plastic wrapping) was absent.

In terms of pure appearance, the Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress presents well with a modern, space age look. It uses a white, grey, and blue colour theme, and brand name embroidery at the base.

Comfort and support

The top cover of this mattress is made of an ‘Aircool’ soft knit cover. This feels noticeably cool to touch and should help to minimise moisture, sweat, and heat.

This cover sits over a layer of cooling gel memory foam and a layer of cooling swirl memory foam. These comfort layers feel soft, with a unique ‘spongy’ feel. These memory foam layers offer plenty of pressure relief, and the foam has a slight sinking sensation as you settle into position.

As with many foam mattresses, the mattress isn’t as responsive as many innerspring mattresses, so changing sleep positions may require some effort. In any case, the mattress should suit side sleepers well, but depending on the individual, it may also accomodate back sleepers and stomach sleepers.

In terms of firmness, our team rated this configuration as a ‘medium’ feel and a 5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

The main support structure of the Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress is comprised of 2 layers of green tea base foam. This won’t offer the same level of spinal support as many innerspring mattresses, but it should offer adequate support and stability for some.

The finer details

In terms of build quality, the Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress is fair and about what we would expect for the price. Unfortunately edge support is not particularly firm, so heavier people may find it difficult to use all of the mattress surface.

Partner disturbance is minimal, so a restless partner shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Understandably though, partner disturbance will depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.

The comfort layers feel soft, with a unique ‘spongy’ feel.

The Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress doesn’t come with a free trial period like many of its competitors, but most could live with this when you consider its low price point. It does come with a handy 10 year warranty though, so you will have some peace of mind in terms of longevity.

It’s worth noting that the foams used in the Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress are certified as non-toxic by CertiPUR-US®, one of the world’s leading authorities in foam testing. This certification gives customers the reassurance that these foams have been tested for toxic chemicals such as mercury, lead, formaldehyde, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

It’s also worth mentioning that the Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress is very light in weight (queen size mattress is 24.6 kgs), so this will make it easier to transport and to change the bed sheets.

What bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame or a (solid) ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).

A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.

The Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress is not the most sophisticated mattress that we have tested, but its value for money proposition is hard to ignore. It offers reasonable levels of comfort and support, and is a good option for the price conscious shopper.
