Valevåg Mattress Review
The Valevåg Mattress is a rather basic, innerspring mattress that comes in a firm or extra firm feel.
Purchase and delivery
The Valevåg Mattress can be purchased through the IKEA website or at any of their 12 stores Australia-wide. Delivery costs will depend on your location, but a typical delivery cost to a metropolitan area is $49.
In terms of appearance, this mattress is typical of many IKEA mattresses. It has a fairly dull appearance with a white and grey colour theme. It sits 24cm high which is lower than many other innerspring mattresses.
Comfort and support
The Valevåg Mattress uses an outer cover made of 100% polyester that also includes underside ticking (non-woven polypropylene).
Additional comfort materials include a layer of 100% polyester filling, and a layer of polyurethane foam (25 kg/cubic metre).
The firm option offers a basic level of comfort with a dense, spongy feel. It should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers and stomach sleepers). Understandably though, its suitability will vary between individuals.
Our expert reviewers all agreed that the firm version has a medium-firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Firm option
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
As you would expect, the extra firm option is slightly firmer but still has an adequate level of comfort. It would likely suit most back sleepers.
Our expert reviewers all agreed that the extra firm version has a firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Extra firm option
The Valevåg Mattress uses a steel pocket spring system. Although there are 5 ‘comfort zones’ in this spring system, these zones are difficult to detect and the support structure feels basic.
Nevertheless, it should provide adequate back support for most people.
The Valevåg Mattress responds well to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness in the ‘optimal’ zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The overall build quality of this mattress is questionable, but fair for its price. The mattress construction and materials are basic and the foam components feel unsophisticated.
The overall build quality of this mattress is questionable, but fair for its price.
Edge support is reasonable, so most users should be able to use the entire mattress surface without fear of falling off the edge.
Partner disturbance is noticeable, but not excessive. As always though, motion transfer will vary depending on the mattress size and the size of the occupants of the bed.
It’s also worth noting that this mattress has side handles to make it easier to carry and transport.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Valevåg Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation may void the mattress warranty.
We do not recommend the Valevåg Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
The Valevåg mattress is available in 4 sizes (180x200cm, queen, double, and single) so it should suit most adult sleeping situations.

Final verdict
The Valevåg Mattress is a basic mattress but it may still provide enough comfort and support for some people. Its value proposition is noteworthy.
