Vadsö Mattress Review
The Vadsö Mattress is a cheap, low quality innerspring mattress that has a very firm feel.
Purchase and delivery
The Vadsö Mattress can be purchased through the IKEA website or at any of their 12 stores Australia-wide. Delivery costs will depend on your location, but a typical delivery cost to a metropolitan area is $49.
This mattress has a plain appearance with a grey colour theme. It sits 17cm high which is much lower than many other innerspring mattresses.
Comfort and support
The Vadsö Mattress uses an outer cover made of 100% polyester that also includes a top lining of 100% polypropylene and a 100% polyester filling.
The main comfort material used in this mattress is a layer of polyurethane foam (25 kg/cubic metre).
As we touched on earlier, this mattress has a particularly firm and hard feel, with a level of comfort that could only be described as inadequate.
The firmness of this mattress would suit back sleepers, but we would question its suitability for any sleeping position.
Our expert reviewers all agreed that this mattress has an extra firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 9 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
The support structure of this mattress is a steel Bonnell spring system. Like most Bonnell springs, this system feels unsteady and unstable. Like its level of comfort, back support on this mattress would not be suitable for regular use.
The Vadsö Mattress responds excessively to normal sleep movements. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) will involve a lot of mattress movement and partner disturbance.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The overall build quality of this mattress is well below average. The mattress construction and materials are very basic and the foam components feel unsophisticated.
The overall build quality of this mattress is well below average.
Not surprisingly for a mattress of this quality, edge support is lacking, so users may not be able to utilise the entire surface of the mattress.
Partner disturbance is very noticeable and a restless partner will likely cause problems. As always though, motion transfer will vary depending on the mattress size and the size of the occupants of the bed.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Vadsö Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation may void the mattress warranty.
We do not recommend the Vadsö Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
The Vadsö Mattress is available in 2 sizes (queen and single) so it should suit many sleeping arrangements.

Final verdict
The Vadsö Mattress is a poor quality mattress that likely won’t provide adequate levels of comfort and support for regular use.
