Sherman Mattress ‘Firm but Fair’ Review
The Sherman Mattress (‘Firm but Fair’ version) is an excellent mattress and is one of the best value options on the Australian market.
The Sherman Mattress (Firm but Fair) forms the ‘firm’ feel version of the Sherman mattress range, that also includes a medium (Just Perfect) and a plush (Full Body Hug) version.
Purchase and delivery
All Sherman mattresses can be conveniently ordered online through the Sherman website. Delivery is free and can be delivered to most places in Australia. Sherman has an excellent delivery service, and is very accommodating with days and times that suit the customer (see mattress prices and delivery times below).

Unlike most mattresses that can be purchased online, the Sherman Mattress (Firm but Fair) doesn’t come compressed in a box, so you wont need to wait for it to ‘decompress’ before sleeping on it.
Sherman has a special ‘white glove’ delivery service where your mattress will be placed carefully into your home, even if you have several flights of stairs.
Comfort and support
On first appearance, the Sherman Mattress (Firm but Fair) has a distinct modern, elegant style. As with all Sherman mattresses, the top cover is made from a mix of cotton and polyester. This layer feels soft and smooth, and gives the mattress a luxurious vibe.
This cover sits over a layer of premium foam, which offers a nice level of comfort and pressure relief. Even though it has a firm feel, it certainly doesn’t feel hard or uncomfortable.
The mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.
Our team rated it as a ‘medium’ feel and a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. All Sherman mattresses use a robust pocket spring system that offers excellent support, and should accomodate people of all sizes.
The Sherman Mattress (Firm but Fair) responds beautifully to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness as ‘optimal’. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
All Sherman Mattresses have a high level of craftsmanship and refinement. Edge support is sound and partner disturbance is minimal. Sherman also offers a 100 night trial period and a 10 year warranty, so you have plenty of peace of mind when you buy.

What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Sherman Mattress (Firm but Fair) to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 7 cm apart).
A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 7 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.
