Serta Avant Garde Verbier Review
The Serta Avant Garde Verbier uses a number of sophisticated materials in its construction and is one of the most expensive mattresses that we have tested.
Purchase and delivery
This mattress can be ordered online through the Forty Winks website. It can also be purchased through any of Forty Winks’ stores across Australia.
Delivery is available Australia-wide but delivery fees (and times) do vary. Online delivery fees are based on your location from the nearest store, and delivery times will depend on stock availability. For more details, see our ‘Delivery’ section below.
Aesthetically, the Serta Avant Garde Verbier presents with plenty of class. It has a distinct luxurious vibe and uses white and cream tones in its external design.
Comfort and support
The top comfort layer of this mattress includes fine fabrics from Belgium, a heat regulating layer called KulKote, and soft comfort foams. It also contains a layer of natural latex.
This comfort layer is noticeably soft and creates a sinking feeling in all positions. The mattress would most likely suit side sleepers, but it may simply be too soft for many.
We rated the Serta Avant Garde Verbier as a ‘plush’ feel and an 3.5 / 10 on the firmness scale. Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
The support structure used in the Serta Avant Garde Verbier is an Avant Garde dual core support system. This feels stable and sturdy, but the support offered by this spring unit may be negated by the particularly plush comfort layer.
In terms of responsiveness, the Serta Avant Garde Verbier doesn’t respond particularly well to normal sleep movements. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
In terms of build quality and craftsmanship, the Serta Avant Garde Verbier is excellent. The quality of its finishings are exceptional, and side handles should make it easy to transport and rotate the mattress.
It’s worth noting here that this mattress has a 90 day comfort guarantee. This means that you can swap the mattress (for a more suitable model) if you are not satisfied with your purchase.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Serta Avant Garde Verbier to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).
A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.
Sleep Republic Pro Base
Furthermore, we do not recommend the Serta Avant Garde Verbier to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this will also void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
The Serta Avant Garde Verbier is available in 7 sizes (super king, king, queen, double, king single, long single and single ) so it should suit all sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2021.
Final verdict
The Serta Avant Garde Verbier is a lovely mattress but its soft, plush feel does compromise its level of back support. Nevertheless, it has a high level of craftsmanship and comes with a 90 day comfort guarantee.
