Quokka Beds Latex Mattress Review
As the name suggests, the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress is made up predominantly of 100% natural latex. The mattress can be ordered in two different heights (16cm or 24cm) with each producing a number of different firmness options.
The Quokka Beds Latex Mattress was an interesting product to review. The latex construction gives it a unique feel, different to that of a traditional innerspring mattress. This specific feel is not necessarily a good or bad thing, but it may only appeal to some people.
Nevertheless, let’s break it all down to see if this mattress is right for you.
✏️ Product summary
- Organic latex mattress

Purchase and delivery
The Quokka Beds Latex Mattress can be conveniently ordered online through the Quokka Beds website. The mattress components (cover and latex layers) will be delivered to your door, in compact boxes.
Delivery is free to most metro areas and dispatch times will depend on stock availability. Once your mattress is sent, delivery time usually takes 4-8 days. If you live in Perth, deliveries are made every Saturday. You can read more about delivery times in our ‘Delivery’ section further down.
The mattress components were easy to remove from its packaging, but you will need some bin space for the plastic wrappings and cardboard. Latex is also noticeably heavy and difficult to carry, so we recommend having two people available to unpack this mattress.
The mattress comes with a neat little product pack that includes assembly instructions and 2 cork drink coasters. A nice touch indeed from Quokka Beds.
Visually, the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress has a simple and plain appearance. It uses a cream coloured outer cover with a blue and grey (brand name) embroidery at its base.
Mattress construction
In terms of main components, the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress has a fairly simple construction. Its two main parts include an Organic Cotton and Wool Cover, and (2 or 3 layers of) Certified Organic Latex.
1. Organic Cotton and Wool Cover
The Organic Cotton and Wool Cover is made from 100% GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton from Sri Lanka. This includes 200 grams per square metre of wool wadding and a breathable bottom canvas.
2. Organic 7-Zone Latex
The latex layers in this mattress consist of an Organic 7-Zone Latex, with different zones to accommodate each section of the body (e.g. shoulders and pelvis).
This latex comprises of pure and consistent 7.5cm layers of 100% Certified Organic Dunlop Latex, sapped straight from the trees in the sustainable forests of Sri Lanka.
How does the customisation work?
As we mentioned earlier, the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress allows you to select your mattress with a specific height (24cm or 16cm). Each of these height options enables you to rearrange the latex layers to produce different firmness options.
These firmness options can get a little complicated, so let’s take a deep dive into how it all works. Positioning the latex layers is not particularly easy, so we would highly recommend having two people on hand to assist with this.
16cm height (2 layers)
If you decide to purchase the 16cm height option, your mattress will include 2 layers of latex. In this height option you can then choose to purchase 1 of 3 different firmness options:
1. Medium-firm
This simply involves two layers of medium latex as per the graphic below (taken from the shop page):
2. Firm (with Extra Firm Option)
This involves one layer of firm latex and one layer of medium latex. The firm option requires you to place the medium layer on top and the firm layer on the bottom:
To create an extra-firm feel, you simply switch the layers around so that the firm layer sits on top and the medium layer sits on the bottom.
3. Split
This is where things get a little complicated. If you wish to purchase the 16cm height in a split configuration, you can create a medium feel on one side, and a firm feel on the other.
This is done by placing the full medium layer on top, and the medium and firm layers underneath:
The split option also allows you to create a medium feel on one side and an extra-firm feel on the other side. This requires the full layer of medium latex to be placed on the bottom, and the medium and firm layers to be placed on top.
So, if you decide to purchase the 16cm height option of the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress, you have 3 main firmness options to consider before you buy. As you can see above, 2 of these main firmness options (firm and split) have an additional firmness choice.
24cm height (3 layers)
If you thought the 16cm height options were a little complicated, the 24cm height option will require even more concentration.
If you wish to purchase the 24cm height option, your mattress will include 3 layers of latex. Like with the 16cm height, you can choose to purchase one of 3 different firmness options:
1. Medium
The medium feel option in the 24cm height, involves placing the 2 medium layers on top, with the firm layer on the bottom. Quokka Beds indicate that the firm layer can also be placed in the middle with presumably, little change to the firmness:
2. Medium-Firm (with Firm option)
This second firmness option (in the 24cm height) requires the medium layer to be placed on top, with the firm layers placed underneath.
The medium-firm selection also allows you to create a firm feel, by switching the medium and firm layers around so that the medium layer is now positioned in the middle.
3. Split
The split option involves a fair bit of positioning so again, it would be highly advantageous to have two people available to help with this set up.
If you decide to purchase this split option, it has a medium feel on one side, and a medium-firm feel on the other. The configuration of the latex layers can be seen below:
This split option also allows you to change the medium-firm side to a firm feel by placing the full medium layer in the middle, and the half-medium and half-firm layers on top.
As you can see, there are numerous different firmness options with this mattress – by our count, 11 in total. This could be a little overwhelming in terms of an average customer wanting to buy a new mattress.
One advantage of purchasing the Quokka Beds latex Mattress is the 100 night comfort guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the firmness of your initial selection (within 100 nights), Quokka Beds can send you a free latex layer so that you can adjust the firmness of your mattress. We discuss this in the ‘Trial Period and Warranty’ section further down.
Despite the firmness options being somewhat complicated, one must not forget that it offers customers a high level of customisation to greatly increase the chance that you will find a firmness that suits your needs.
Comfort and support
The Organic Cotton and Wool Cover feels rough and rugged, rather than smooth and silky. Nevertheless, it feels strong, durable, and breathable.
With so many different firmness options with this mattress, assessing overall comfort and support is somewhat tricky. In any case, the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress is generally comfortable and supportive with the typical ‘latex bounce’.
As we touched on earlier, latex mattresses feel a little different to the traditional innerspring mattress. Whilst this is difficult to describe in words, latex can feel a little hard and rubbery. Latex mattresses also have the distinctive ‘rubber’ smell.
Interestingly though, the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress is more comfortable than some other latex mattresses on the market (such as the Zenna Mattress). It’s fair to say that most versions of the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress offer nice pressure relief.
As part of our standard review process, we have assigned a firmness rating to each configuration. Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a highly rated bed base with rigid slats.
16cm height
1. Medium-firm
The medium-firm option (in the 16cm height) offers a nice level of back support and responsiveness. It is reasonably comfortable and exhibited a subtle ‘waterbed’ sensation during normal sleep movements.
Our team rated the medium-firm version (16cm height) a 6 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). It should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.
Medium-Firm (16cm height)
2. Firm (with Extra Firm Option)
The firm option (16cm height) has a nice balance of comfort and support. It also responds to nicely to normal sleep movements.
Our team rated the firm (16cm height) a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). It should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.
Firm (16cm height)
Our team rated the extra-firm (16cm height) a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). It would likely suit most back sleepers, but it may also side sleepers and stomach sleepers.
Extra-Firm (16cm height)
3. Split
The split option (16cm height) involves a medium feel on one side, with a firm (or extra-firm feel) on the other. As you can see, these firmness ratings are noted above.
24cm height
1. Medium
The medium version (24cm height) absorbs body well, even though we noticed a very slight sinking sensation. Nevertheless, it still offers good support and pressure relief.
Our team rated the medium (24cm height) a 6 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). It should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.
Medium (24cm height)
2. Medium-Firm (with Firm Option)
The medium-firm option (24cm height) has a nice balance of comfort and support. We noticed a slight ‘puffy’ sensation during sleep movements, but nothing too off-putting.
Our team rated the medium-firm (24cm height) a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). It should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.
Medium-Firm (24cm height)
Our team rated the firm version (24cm height) a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). It would likely suit most back sleepers, but it may also suit side sleepers and stomach sleepers. Of course, this suitability will vary between individuals.
Firm (24cm height)
3. Split
The split option involves a medium feel on one side, with a medium-firm (or firm feel) on the other. You can see these firmness ratings above.
In terms of back support, most versions of the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress held up well. Support will be generally better in the 24cm height option, simply due to the extra mass that is present to support the spine.
To this point, we would recommend that larger sized people choose the 24cm height option. The 16cm height option should accommodate normal or below average sized people.
Partner disturbance was generally in the lower range, but some firmness options (e.g. firm, 24cm) did involve some motion transfer. It’s important to note though that larger mattresses (e.g. king size) usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size (and weight) of the occupants of the bed.
As we alluded to earlier, latex is generally quite bouncy and responsive to normal sleep movements. Most versions of the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress responded well to positional changes during sleep, so overall we rated its level of responsiveness as optimal.
In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
In terms of quality and craftsmanship, the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress is hard to fault. The cotton and wool cover feels durable, and the zip mechanism was smooth and strong.
As expected, it was a little more difficult to zip up the 24cm height, but it should be easy enough for most.
Edge support is not outstanding, but we wouldn’t expect a full latex (or full foam) mattress to excel in this area. If edge support is important to you, we would definitely recommend the 24cm height option, as the edge support on the 16cm height option is a little soft.
We wouldn’t claim to be experts in assessing latex quality, but based on experience, the organic latex used in this mattress is of high quality. The integrity of the material appears to be of a high standard, and latex is typically very resilient and durable.
Positioning and rearranging the latex layers does involve a bit of work. Lining up the layers perfectly to allow the cover to be placed around it, will require some careful manoeuvring. Latex has a ‘dead and heavy’ feel, so carrying and positioning these layers can be hard work.
The lack of side handles is also disappointing, particularly when you consider the difficulty of carrying and transporting a latex mattress. This would be an easy product enhancement that Quokka Beds could add in the future.
The two main components of the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress (Cotton & Wool Cover and the Organic 7-Zone Latex layers) are all highly certified as non-toxic and eco-friendly. The latex in particular is certified by a number of highly reputable testing groups such as Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and OEKO-TEX®.
What bed base should I use?
The Quokka Beds Latex Mattress requires a bed base to very specific requirements. The mattress must have a firm, flat, aerated base supporting it (such as the Quokka Beds Original Bed Base).
The bed base must have at least 1 grounded central support beam for Queens (2 for Kings), while any slats must be 5-9cm wide and be spaced 3-5cm apart (get in touch if you have something else).
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress to be used with a bed base with rigid slats (not flexible/posture slats) with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart.
A base that we would recommend to be used with the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress is the Quokka Beds Original Bed Base.
We do not recommend the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this will void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty. Furthermore, mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
The Quokka Beds Latex Mattress offers a 100 night trial period. Within this timeframe, you can request a replacement of a latex layer to adjust the firmness of your mattress.
If, after this, you are still not satisfied, you do have the option to return your mattress for a refund. The return postage fees are $200 (16cm height) and $250 (24cm height).
You can also upgrade from a 16cm height (2-layer) to a 24cm height (3-layer) within the 100 night trial. You can just pay the difference and receive a new mattress cover for free.
This mattress also comes with a 20 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is superior to the more common 10 year warranty among its competitors.
Available sizes
The Quokka Beds Latex Mattress is available in 6 Australian mattress sizes (single, long single, king single, double, queen and king) so it should suit most sleeping arrangements. It is also available in a ‘long double’ size.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2023.
Final verdict
The Quokka Beds Latex Mattress is a unique product with a myriad of different firmness options. Once you decide on your product height and firmness though, this product offers high levels of quality, comfort, and support. Its non-toxic certifications are also noteworthy.

The Simple, Supportive, 100% Organic Latex Mattress
Organic latex is simply the world’s #1 eco-conscious, high-performance mattress material – far superior to springs or foams.
Supportive
With its unique bounce and resiliency, our organic latex gives you consistent and comfortable support across your whole body, to help alleviate any aches and pains for a restful sleep.
Durable
Compared to synthetic latex and foams which lose their bounce in just a few months or years, our natural latex scores 100/100 for durability, meaning no sags for at least 20 years (guaranteed) and it will feel new and fresh for years to come.
Organic & Healthy
Latex is naturally derived from the milky sap of rubber trees. It is naturally resistant to moisture, mould and dust-mites to give a healthy and allergy-free sleep. It is also fully biodegradable, so you no longer need to dispose a mattress made from metals and plastics every 3-7 years.
Temperature-Balancing
Contrary to what some believe, the open-cell structure of each layer promotes great air-ventilation, ensuring our latex mattress does not retain heat from your body while you sleep.
Why Organic Latex?
From over 30 years of selling all different types of mattresses, here’s our honest overview of the most popular mattress materials (and why we have settled on 100% natural latex).
Almost all mattresses on the market contain Polyfoams (plastic foams), sometimes a layer of Memory Foam or Latex, and sometimes these materials are on top of Springs too. However, it is important to note that each material comes in a range of qualities, but it is usually very hard to determine what quality of material is in a particular mattress (without the proper certifications and transparency).
Why Our Mattress?
Now that you know why we have settled on only Organic Latex, learn here how we compare to the rest. By importing directly from certified, high-quality suppliers and avoiding excessive markups and overhead costs, you can enjoy the tremendous benefits of a luxurious organic latex mattress for many years, at an affordable cost.
Choosing your Latex Mattress?
Go for a 2 layer (16cm) if you generally sleep without pain, mainly sleep on your back/front, or prefer a firm mattress.
Go for a 3 layer (24cm) if you sometimes sleep with pain, sleep on your side, or prefer a ‘luxury’ mattress at a more standard height.
Our mattresses contain layers of latex in 2 different firmness levels (‘Medium’ and ‘Firm’), which can be rearranged at home to refine your comfort later. Even our 2 layer mattress has more actual latex in it than almost any traditional “latex” mattress you’ll find in a store (as they usually only include a token 2.5cm layer inside them). Further, our new Split mattress allow you to choose and adjust the firmness between you and your sleeping partner! Plus, within 100 nights, you can exchange a layer with us for no charge at all (or even send the whole thing back for a full refund, minus return postage costs).
When choosing your firmness, is important to understand Natural Latex is very different to other materials. Its unique bounce means you can go for a slightly softer, more contouring firmness but still feel fully supported, while its unique durability means you can sleep on it for 20+ years, with full confidence it won’t feel firmer or be less-supportive over time. On top of this, most of our mattresses are able to be made firmer at home (but not softer), which is why we suggest tending on the side of slightly too soft, rather than too firm.
