Purchase and delivery
The Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress can be conveniently ordered online through the Quokka Beds website. Delivery is free to most metro areas with non-metro areas incurring a delivery fee.
Once your mattress is sent, delivery time may take anywhere from 6-15 days (non-Perth orders). If you live in Perth, deliveries are made every Saturday. You can read more about delivery times in our Delivery information section, further down.
The mattress components (outer cover, latex layers, and spring unit) will be delivered to your door, in seperate packages. The outer cover and springs are compressed into boxes, and the latex layers are rolled up in plastic packaging.
The mattress components were easy to remove from its packaging, but you will need some bin space for the plastic wrappings and cardboard. Keep in mind also that latex is noticeably heavy and difficult to carry, so we recommend having two people available to unpack this mattress.
Putting the mattress components together will take a bit of careful positioning and patience, but it should be manageable, even for one person.
We found it best to place the cover on your bed base first, then place the springs accordingly. It’s also worth mentioning that the first layer of latex needs to be placed directly on top of the springs. The second (top) layer of latex is then placed within the top compartment of the cover.
You can get a better idea of the set up process in Quokka Bed’s ‘YouTube video below:
The mattress comes with a neat little product pack that includes assembly instructions and 2 cork drink coasters. A nice touch indeed from Quokka Beds.
Visually, the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress has a simple and plain appearance. It has a height of 33cm which is fairly typical of an innerspring mattress.
This mattress uses a cream, brown, and white colour theme as well as blue and grey (brand name) embroidery at its base.
Mattress construction
The Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress has three main components.
1. Organic Cotton and Wool Cover
The Organic Cotton and Wool Cover is made from 100% GOTS-Certified organic cotton from Sri Lanka. This includes 200 grams per square metre of wool wadding and a breathable bottom canvas.
2. Organic 7-Zone Latex
The latex in this mattress comprises of pure and consistent 7.5cm layers of 100% Certified Organic Dunlop Latex. This latex has been sapped straight from the trees in the sustainable forests of Sri Lanka.
3. Pocket Springs
These 750 plus, high-grade pocket springs are individually-wrapped in 75gsm organic cotton. The springs are compressed for easy delivery and our premium 13.5 gauge springs are made of high manganese carbon steel.
How does the customisation work?
As we alluded to earlier, the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress features an customisable design whereby you can adjust the firmness of the mattress within some of the of the initial firmness selections (e.g. medium).
Adjusting the firmness of the mattress is done by rearranging the layers of latex in the top section of the mattress. Again, positioning the latex layers is not particularly easy, so we would highly recommend having two people on hand to assist with this.
Let’s run through how this works.
1. Soft
This firmness option involves two layers of medium latex placed over the pocket springs, as per the graphic below (taken from the shop page).
The firmness cannot be adjusted if you choose this option.
2. Medium
This firmness option allows you to choose between two firmness configurations – ‘medium’ or ‘medium-firm’.
The ‘medium’ option involves one layer of medium being placed above one layer of firm latex. These layers then sit above the pocket spring system.
The ‘medium-firm’ option requires you to switch the layers around so that the firm layer sits on top and the medium layer.
3. Firm
The firm version involves two layers of firm latex placed over the pocket springs, as shown below.
The firmness cannot be adjusted if you choose this option.
4. Split Soft
This option allows you to choose a different firmness level on each side of the mattress.
One side will always be the ‘soft’ option (medium layer over medium layer). The firmness of this side cannot be adjusted.
The other side can have either a ‘medium’ feel (medium layer over firm layer) or a ‘medium-firm’ (firm layer over medium layer).
5. Split Firm
This option also allows you to choose a different firmness level on each side of the mattress.
One side will always be the ‘firm’ option (firm layer over firm layer). The firmness of this side cannot be adjusted.
The other side can have either a ‘medium’ feel (medium layer over firm layer) or a ‘medium-firm’ (firm layer over medium layer).
As you can see, there are numerous different firmness options with this mattress. This may be a little overwhelming to an average customer, but we hope that the summary above is useful.
One advantage of purchasing the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress is the 100 night comfort guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the firmness of your initial selection (within 100 nights), Quokka Beds can send you a free latex layer so that you can adjust the firmness of your mattress.
Despite the firmness options being a little complicated, one must not forget that this design will increase the chance that you will find a firmness that suits your specific preference.
Comfort and support
The Organic Cotton and Wool Cover feels smooth and soft. Additionally, it also feels durable and breathable.
With several firmness configurations, assessing overall comfort and support is a little tricky as each configuration has its own feel and character.
With that said, the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress is generally comfortable and supportive. The bouncy, rubbery sensation of latex is evident in all options.
As with most other latex mattresses, a distinctive (but not necessarily strong) ‘rubber’ smell is also evident.
It must be said that the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress is more comfortable than some other latex mattresses on the market (such as the Zenna Mattress). It’s fair to say that most versions of the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress offer nice pressure relief.
As part of our standard review process, we have assigned a firmness rating to each configuration. Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a highly rated bed base with rigid slats.
1. Soft
The soft configuration of this mattress (medium layer over medium layer) is very comfortable and has smooth pressure relief. It has a bouncy and responsive feel, but this bounciness is within normal limits.
This soft configuration should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but this suitability will vary between individuals.
Our reviewers settled on a 6 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest), based on a majority vote.
Soft Version
2. Medium
The medium configuration of this mattress (medium layer over firm layer) is also comfortable and absorbs body weight evenly. As you you would expect, it also has a bouncy and responsive feel.
This medium configuration should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but this suitability will vary between individuals.
Our reviewers settled on a 6.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest), based on a majority vote.
Medium Version
3. Medium-Firm
The medium-firm configuration of this mattress (firm layer over medium layer)has smooth pressure relief along with the characteristic latex feel.
This medium-firm configuration should also suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers).
Our reviewers settled on a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest), based on a majority vote.
Medium-Firm Version
4. Firm
We were unable to test the firm configuration of this mattress (firm layer over firm layer) but we would be confident in assuming that it has a firm but comfortable feel, with nice pressure relief.
We would also assume that this firm configuration would suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers).
Based on our testing of the other firmness configurations, our reviewers estimate that this configuration would sit at a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Firm Version
As with many adjustable mattresses, we didn’t notice a huge difference between each firmness option. Nevertheless, its adjustability may be useful for users in terms of a specific comfort level.
In terms of back support, all firmness configurations of the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress held up well. The spring system feels strong and responsive and should accommodate people of all sizes.
As we touched on earlier, latex is generally quite bouncy and responsive to normal sleep movements. All versions of the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress responded strongly to positional changes during sleep, so overall we rated its level of responsiveness in the optimal zone.
In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
Responsiveness
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
In terms of quality and craftsmanship, the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress is admirable. The cotton and wool cover feels durable, and the zip mechanism is smooth and strong.
Positioning the latex layers can be a little tricky. So, some patience is required to ensure that the layers are in place before you zip up the cover.
Edge support is decent, and will be best on the firmer configurations. So, you should be able to use the full surface of the mattress, without the fear of falling off the edge. Similarly, the mattress perimeter should not have any trouble accommodating normal sitting activities.
As with some customisable, innerspring mattresses, partner disturbance was noticeable. We wouldn’t say it was excessive, but all firmness options did involve some motion transfer.
With that said, motion transfer may vary. A larger mattress (e.g. king size) will usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.
We wouldn’t claim to be experts in assessing latex quality, but based on experience, the organic latex used in this mattress appears to be of a high quality. The integrity of the material appears to be of a high standard, and latex is typically very resilient and durable.
If you desire an even softer feel than the configurations noted above, you can purchase the Quokka Beds Latex Mattress Topper separately. This should provide an extra layer of comfort and softness.
The Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress contains handles that are positioned horizontally on each long side. These handles are easy to use but they did seem to stretch the side fabric a little, when pulled on.
In any case, these side handles will make moving or transporting the mattress easier.
The two main components of the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress (Cotton and Wool Cover and the Organic 7-Zone Latex layers) are both highly certified as non-toxic and eco-friendly.
The latex in particular is certified by a number of highly reputable testing groups such as Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and OEKO-TEX®.
What bed base should I use?
The Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress requires a bed base with very specific requirements. The mattress must have a firm, flat, aerated base supporting it (such as the Quokka Beds Original Bed Base).
The bed base must have at least 1 grounded central support beam for Queens (2 for Kings), while any slats must be 5-9cm wide and be spaced 3-5cm apart. Get in touch with Quokka Beds if you are unsure if your bed base is suitable.
We do not recommend the Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this will void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty. Furthermore, mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Comfort guarantee and warranty
The Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress offers a 100 night comfort guarantee. Within this timeframe, you can request a replacement of a latex layer to adjust the firmness of your mattress.
This comfort guarantee also allows you to swap your mattress for another mattress at no charge.
Whilst this mattress does not come with a true ‘trial period’ (where you can return the mattress for a refund), the comfort guarantee still gives some level of reassurance.
This mattress also comes with a 20 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is superior to the more common 10 year warranty among its competitors.
Available sizes
The Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress is available in 2 Australian mattress sizes (queen and king) so it should suit most adult sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2024.
Final verdict
The Quokka Beds Hybrid Latex Mattress presents a unique but impressive package. It offers high levels of comfort and support, along with a number of firmness options.
Its non-toxic and eco-friendly certifications are also noteworthy.

Extra Supportive
Get an impressive 33cm of pure support and comfort with 750+ individually-wrapped carbon steel pocket springs – 2 thick layers of our tried and tested 7-zone organic latex – plus a perimeter of extra firm springs for luxurious sleep-to-the-edge support.
Uniquely Durable
In contrast to most spring mattresses – with a thin layer of quickly-degrading polyfoam, memory foam and/or synthetic latex on top – your mattress includes 2 thick layers of premium, ultra-resilient latex to last for over 20 years + a super-thick, comfortable and durable 500GSM organic cover.
Ultra Cool & Healthy
Benefit from the most breathable (i.e. coolest) mattress materials on the market – a premium pocket sprung base, 100% organic latex comfort layers and a 100% organic fibre cover. Don’t get caught out by mattresses that trap in heat and moisture with a non-breathable layer of foam.
Why Latex & Pocket Springs?
From over 35 years of experience, we’ve always been open and honest that springs are great – if done right.
From over 2 years in the making, our individually-wrapped high-grade 13.5 gauge springs (over 750 of them in each mattress), provides that traditional premium mattress feel and look – without the regrettable drawbacks of thin layers of polyfoam or synthetic latex on top.
Instead, you get a full 15cm of our time-tested 7-Zone Organic Latex – which completely negates the durability concerns that traditional innersprings have.
Support
The bottom layer/s in a mattress are designed to provide support through ‘spinal alignment’, by bouncing back at the heavier parts of your body as they sink in. Latex and Springs are very good at this, as they both provide very good ‘bounceback’ resilience (the more pressure that is applied, the more they want to return to their original position).
Good quality, high-resilience Polyfoams can do this fairly well for a period of time, although it is hard to know or test what quality of polyfoam is in a mattress. Memory Foam has very little resilience (it takes a long time to return to its original position), and so is never used in the support layers.
Comfort
The top layer/s in a mattress are designed to provide comfort through ‘pressure relief’, by forming a ‘cradle’ that shapes to your body profile. Latex and Memory Foam are both very good at relieving pressure by moulding around your body.
Softer Polyfoams can also do this, however, are one of the biggest reasons for mainstream mattresses softening over time and forming body impressions – severely reducing the ability of the mattress to mould and support you. Springs are never used in the comfort layers because as you can imagine, they wouldn’t be very comfortable.
Why Our Mattress?
Now that you know why we have settled on Organic Latex, learn here how we compare to the rest. By importing directly from certified, high-quality suppliers and avoiding excessive markups and overhead costs, you can enjoy the tremendous benefits of a luxurious organic latex mattress for many years, at an affordable cost.
Choosing Your Hybrid Mattress
Our mattresses contain layers of latex in 2 different firmness levels (‘Medium’ and ‘Firm’), which can be rearranged at home to refine your comfort later. Even our 2 layer mattress has more actual latex in it than almost any traditional “latex” mattress you’ll find in a store (as they usually only include a token 2.5cm layer inside them). Further, our new Split mattress allow you to choose and adjust the firmness between you and your sleeping partner! Plus, within 100 nights, you can exchange a layer with us for no charge at all (or even send the whole thing back for a full refund, minus return postage costs).
When choosing your firmness, is important to understand Natural Latex is very different to other materials. Its unique bounce means you can go for a slightly softer, more contouring firmness but still feel fully supported, while its unique durability means you can sleep on it for 20+ years, with full confidence it won’t feel firmer or be less-supportive over time. On top of this, most of our mattresses are able to be made firmer at home (but not softer), which is another reason we suggest tending on the side of too soft, rather than too firm.
Preference
Your personal ‘feel’ preference is usually the most important factor. You might know you’ll like a mattress that feels plush and soft with a little more give to it – or you’ll like sleeping on something firmer. Each layer density will determine the overall feel, so having a Firm layer closer to the top will give you a more lifted, supportive feel – whereas each Medium layer would give a slightly more plush, sinking-in feel.
Sleep style
Side sleepers will need their hips and shoulders to sink into the mattress to contour to their body, whereas back or front sleepers need firmer support to keep their hips from sinking in too much.
Weight
This is not a strict point, but our general recommendation is if you’re under 60kg you’ll most likely prefer a softer mattress, whereas if you’re over 80kg you may suit something firmer.
Issue to fix
Although a mattress is not a magic solution, if you do have some pain, the right firmness is important. A soft mattress can take pressure off your shoulders, a firm mattress can increase support on your back, whereas hip pain could either mean your hips are sinking in too far or not enough – and therefore you’ll likely need a mattress somewhere in the middle.
