The Premium Mattress Review
The Premium Mattress forms part of the Mattress Crafters’ collection that also includes the Boutique Mattress and the Excellence Mattress.
Purchase and delivery
The Premium Mattress can be conveniently ordered online (through the Mattress Crafters’ website) and will be delivered to your door in a compact box.
Delivery is free to most metro areas, and delivery times will vary. ‘Same day’ delivery is available for Melbourne metropolitan customers if orders are placed before midday (weekdays only). For more details, see our ‘Delivery’ section further down.
The box arrived in good condition and the mattress was easy to remove from its box and packaging. As usual, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box.
As per our standard testing procedure, we allowed the product to decompress for 24 hours before testing.
Visually, the Premium Mattress is a little lacking in aesthetic appeal, but as with most mattresses, this won’t matter once you place your linen over it.
The mattress sits 30cm high (which is about average height for an innerspring mattress) and uses a black, grey, and white colour theme. The brand and model embroidery at the base of the mattress does give it a nice touch.
Comfort and support
The top comfort layer of the Premium Mattress includes a stretch knit fabric, a 5mm layer of visco elastic memory foam, a 40mm layer of convoluted foam, and a 50mm layer of premium foam.
These comfort layers offer a spongy yet supportive feel. The foam layers do show their price in some respects – visually there is some unevenness of the top layer, and its level of comfort isn’t at the level of some other bed in a box products that we have tested.
Nevertheless, the Premium Mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but of course, this suitability will vary between individuals.
Based on our testing, our team rated it as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and a 6.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
Sitting below the comfort layer is a 7 zone pocket spring system. This feels reasonably responsive, and should offer decent spinal support for most people.
This spring system also isolates sleep movements well, so partner disturbance shouldn’t be a big problem.
The Premium Mattress responds fairly well to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness in the optimal zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be too much trouble.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The Premium Mattress has a respectable level of edge support, so you should be able to use the full mattress surface without the fear of falling off the edge. The lack of side handles is always disappointing, so this will make it a little harder to manoeuvre through doors and passageways.
The Premium Mattress comes with a 100 night comfort guarantee.
The Premium Mattress comes with a 100 night ‘comfort guarantee’. Keep in mind that you must try the mattress for at least 30 nights before the option to return the mattress (for a refund) comes into play.
Once you have tried the mattress for 30 nights, you then have the option to return the mattress within the following 70 day period.
It’s worth noting that the foam components in this mattress have been certified as non-toxic by SGS Australia, one of the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company. The fabrics in this product have also been certified as non-toxic (OEKO-TEX®).
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Premium Mattress to be used with a sturdy bed frame with solid slats (such as the Chiropedic Bed Base). We also recommend that these slats are no longer than 8 cm apart.
A bed frame with ‘flexible’ (posture) slats may still be adequate, but please note that any unsupportive mattress foundation will void the warranty for this mattress.
According to Mattress Crafters, the Premium Mattress can be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
This mattress is available in 5 sizes (king, queen, double, king single, and single size) so it should accommodate most sleeping situations.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2022.
Final verdict
The Premium Mattress is a decent mattress but not quite as refined as some of the products in the Mattress Crafter’s range. Nevertheless, it offers good value and its 15 year warranty is noteworthy.
