The LLAMA Amethyst is a basic innerspring mattress that offers a cheap option in the mattress in a box category. It has a 3 year warranty and may only be suitable for temporary sleep arrangements.

Purchase and delivery

This mattress is part of Amart Furniture’s ‘Online Exclusive Range’. It can be ordered online through the Amart website and will arrive at your door in a compact box. Delivery is available Australia-wide and shipping costs (and times) will vary – see details in our ‘Delivery’ section below. This mattress is not available to buy in-store.

Aesthetically, the LLAMA Amethyst presents with a basic but clean design. It uses a white and turquoise colour theme along with a brand name label.

Comfort and support

This mattress starts with a soft fabric quilting that sits over a number of comfort foams. These foams include memory foam and high density foam layers. This comfort section provides a reasonable level of comfort, even though it does show its price here.

We rated the LLAMA Amethyst as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale. Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.

This mattress uses heavy-duty steel innersprings as its main support system. This spring unit feels unstable and flimsy, and its level of spinal support is questionable. A restless partner will likely be a problem too, as the springs don’t isolate motion well at all.

The LLAMA Amethyst responds excessively to normal sleep movements. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) will feel overly bouncy.

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.

The finer details

In terms of build quality and craftsmanship, the LLAMA Amethyst is very basic. It lacks side handles, and edge support is soft, meaning that you may not be able to use the entire surface of the mattress.

You can feel the springs through the side of the mattress (an indicator of poor quality) and its quality and finishings appear unsophisticated.

The LLAMA Amethyst comes with a 3 year warranty, but unfortunately does not have a trial period.

What bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the LLAMA Amethyst to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).

A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.
