Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Review

The Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress (sold as ‘Spa Sensations by Zinus’) forms the flagship model in Kmart’s mattress range that also includes the entry level Kmart Mattress, and the mid range Kmart Pocket Spring Mattress.

It’s worth noting that a true hybrid mattress contains a combination of foam and springs, in one cohesive unit (without a distinguishable ‘pillow top’). We would classify the Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress as a true hybrid mattress.

Purchase and delivery

The Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress falls into the ‘mattress in a box’ category and can be ordered online through the Kmart website. It cannot be ordered ‘click and collect’ style so online orders will be delivered to your door (see delivery times and fees in our ‘Delivery’ section further down).

It is worth noting that the Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress is only available for sale in NSW, QLD, VIC, WA, SA, and TAS (as well as the North Island of New Zealand).

This mattress was reasonably easy to remove from its packaging, and took 5-10 minutes to unpack. As usual, we recommend having two people on hand to help unpack a mattress in a box. As per our standard protocol, we allowed the mattress to decompress for 24 hours before we conducted our testing.

Visually, the Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress has a clean and rather modern look. It uses a white and grey colour theme with nice (brand name) embroidery at the head of the mattress.

Comfort and support

The top cover of this mattress is made from a polyester jacquard stretch knit fabric which feels soft and breathable. It doesn’t feel as refined as many of its more expensive competitors, but its quality seems reasonable.

This cover sits over layers of memory foam and high-density foam which offer nice pressure relief. It does feel a little ‘spongy’ and unsophisticated, but considering its price, its level of comfort is quite nice.

This mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, this suitability will vary between individuals.

Our team rated it as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.

Sitting under this comfort layer is a pocket spring system that feels remarkably stable when you consider its price. This spring unit offers good spinal support and it should accommodate people of most sizes.

The Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress doesn’t respond particularly well to normal sleep movements. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses.

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.

The finer details

The overall build quality and craftsmanship of the Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress is fair. Edge support is reasonable thanks to its foam box encasement, and the materials and finishings appear to be of reasonable quality.

Partner disturbance is noticeable but certainly not significant. With that said, motion transfer will depend on the size of the occupants of the bed. You can be sure of one thing though – this is a huge improvement from the original Kmart Mattress.

One wonders if Kmart took on board our brutal review of their first mattress (the Kmart Mattress) to market.

The foams used in the Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress are certified as non-toxic by CertiPUR-US. This is an impressive selling point for this mattress in context of its price. It also has a solid 10 year warranty, a huge step up from the 5 year warranty of the Kmart Mattress.

What bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).

A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

Available sizes

The Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress is only available in 2 sizes (king and queen size) so this may be a limitation for some bed shoppers.

Final verdict

Unlike the original Kmart Mattress, the Kmart Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress is a good buy. Its level of comfort and support is excellent (when you consider its price), and its 10 year warranty offers plenty of peace of mind.
