Hyllestad Review

The Hyllestad is a rather unsophisticated mattress that doesn’t come with high levels of comfort or quality. It uses a combination of memory foam, soft fillings, and pocket springs in its construction.

Purchase and delivery

This mattress can be ordered online, and delivery is available Australia-wide (see full delivery information in our ‘Delivery’ section below). It can also be purchased through any of IKEA’s stores across Australia.

Aesthetically, the Hyllestad presents with a simple, clean appearance. It uses a white and beige colour theme with a brand name label at its base.

Comfort and support

This mattress has a comfort layer that includes a stretch knit fabric, memory foam, and soft fillings. These comfort materials do offer some pressure relief, but it does feel a little hard and dense.

We rated the Hyllestad as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale. Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.

The support structure used in the Hyllestad is a simple pocket spring system. This spring unit feels reasonably stable and should offer adequate spinal support for most people. With that said, it does feel a little flimsy and certainly doesn’t offer the same level of support as other mattresses that we have tested.

The finer details

In terms of build quality and craftsmanship, the Hyllestad is ordinary. It does come with side handles, but its quality and finishings aren’t exactly first class. Partner disturbance will also be noticeable, but will naturally depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.

Edge support is reasonable thanks to a firm felt pad around the edge of the mattress, and it’s worth noting that the mattress comes with an impressive 25 year warranty.

Final verdict

The Hyllestad has an attractive low price but its levels of comfort and quality are lacking. Its spring system feels a little cheap but it could be adequate for a guest room or temporary sleep arrangements.

Sometimes the Hyllestad has a noticeable smell when you open the packaging. The smell isn’t harmful or toxic and disappears over time. Airing and vacuuming the mattress helps to eliminate the smell faster.

All of our mattresses can be used immediately, but keep in mind that a packaged mattress only regains its full shape and comfort after approximately 72 hours. Your body also needs a couple of weeks to adapt to the new mattress.
