Hugo Mattress Review
The Hugo Mattress is a nice mattress that uses latex and memory foam in its construction. It comes with a handy 3 month trial period and a 10 year warranty.
Purchase and delivery
As with other mattress in a box products, the Hugo Mattress can be ordered online (through the Hugo website) and it will arrive at your door in a compact box. Hugo offers free delivery Australia-wide, with same day delivery available for Melbourne metro customers (see delivery times below in ‘Delivery’ section).
The box arrived in good condition and features a practical ‘dual box’ package (pictured below). This made for an easy unpacking process, and as usual, we allowed it to decompress for 24 hours before we started our testing.
Aesthetically, the Hugo Mattress has a simple yet modern look. It uses a grey and white colour theme with a distinctive turquoise coloured brand label.
Comfort and support
The top cover of the Hugo Mattress consists of a soft and breathable fabric. This cover sits over a comfort layer that includes a 15 mm layer of natural latex, a 30 mm layer of memory foam, and a 50 mm layer of transition foam. The ‘latex feel’ is very evident in this comfort layer, and it has a dense, rubbery sensation. Nevertheless, it is still fairly comfortable and offers ample pressure relief.
We would classify the Hugo Mattress as a ‘medium’ feel and a 6 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
These comfort layers sit over a 150 mm deep support foam. This support structure feels sturdy and supports the spine quite well. Partner disturbance is minimal, and it should accommodate people of most sizes.
The finer details
The Hugo Mattress has a reasonable level of craftsmanship and quality. At 24.5 cm high, it sits a little lower than many of its competitors which is practical in terms of transport and changing the sheets. Many other bed in a box options sit over 30 cm high.
Hugo omitted any side handles from its design, but otherwise the mattress appears to be nicely finished. Edge support is within normal limits for a foam mattress, and the mattress expanded fully into its correct shape.
As mentioned earlier, the Hugo Mattress has a 3 month free trial period and a 10 year warranty. It is one of only a few bed in a box products that is Australian made, which is worth considering when buying in this category.
As with most mattress in a box options, we don’t recommend the Hugo Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base. We aren’t aware of any ‘non-toxic’ certifications that the Hugo Mattress holds.

The Hugo Mattress is available in 5 sizes (king, queen, double, king single, and single size) so it should accommodate most sleeping situations.

Final verdict
The Hugo Mattress is a good option in the online mattress market. It is locally made and offers a nice balance of comfort and support. It isn’t as sophisticated as some of its competitors, but it does offer a handy 3 month trial period.
