Hokkasen Review
The Hokkasen uses a combination of latex, and pocket springs in its construction. Despite this, it doesn’t offer the same levels of comfort and support as other mattresses in this price.
Purchase and delivery
This mattress can be ordered online, and delivery is available Australia-wide (see full delivery information in our ‘Delivery’ section below). It can also be purchased through any of IKEA’s stores across Australia.
Aesthetically, the Hokkasen presents with a simple, basic appearance. It uses a white and beige colour theme along with a brand name label at its base.
Comfort and support
This mattress has a comfort layer that includes latex, mini springs, and soft fillings. This does provide some pressure relief, but it doesn’t absorb body weight evenly.
We rated the Hokkasen as an ‘medium-firm’ feel and a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale. Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
The support structure used in the Hokkasen is a steel pocket spring system. This feels cheap and unstable, and may spinal support is very average. It may also struggle under the weight of heavier people.
The finer details
In terms of build quality and craftsmanship, the Hokkasen is fair. It does come with side handles, and its quality and finishings appear to be of reasonable standard.
It’s worth noting though that partner disturbance is noticeable. Edge support is reasonable, but certainly not as firm as similarly priced mattresses that we have tested.
Please note that we do not recommend the Hokkasen to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
Available sizes
The Hokkasen is available in 2 sizes (queen and double) so it should suit a number of different sleeping arrangements. Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2021.
Final verdict
The Hokkasen seems to be a popular mattress at IKEA, but its levels of comfort and support are still well below top products in this price category.

Sometimes the mattress has a noticeable smell when you open the packaging. The smell isn’t harmful or toxic and disappears over time. Airing and vacuuming the mattress helps to eliminate the smell faster.
