The Deep Dream Essential Mattress forms part of Lifely (previously E-living) Deep Dream mattress range, that also includes the flagship Deep Dream Green Tea and the popular Deep Dream Premium.
Purchase and delivery
As with other ‘mattress in a box’ products, you can simply order this mattress online (through the Lifely website) and it will arrive at your door in a compact box. Delivery is fast and E-living do free shipping to most metro areas Australia-wide (to check delivery fees, see below in our ‘Delivery’ section).
The Deep Dream Essential Mattress was easy to remove from its packaging. As usual, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box, even though it is usually manageable with one person.
Comfort and support
The Deep Dream Essential Mattress has a comfort layer that is made up of an organic knitted fabric and a high density foam. This top comfort layer is soft and comfortable, and absorbs body smoothly.
This mattress should suit most side sleepers well, but it may also suit back sleepers and stomach sleepers. Understandably though, this suitability will vary between individuals.
Our team rated this mattress as a ‘medium / soft’ feel and a 4 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
This mattress has a 5 zone pocket spring system, which should offer adequate back support for most people.
The Deep Dream Essential Mattress responds well to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness as ‘optimal’. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The mattress does show its price in some ways (no foam encasement over the sides) but it presents a good value option for those who like a softer feel mattress.
Partner disturbance is present, but certainly not significant. Edge support is somewhat lacking but within normal limits and certainly fair for the price. It is worth noting that this mattress is well certified as non-toxic which is an important consideration for many bed shoppers.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Deep Dream Essential Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).
A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

Final verdict
Overall, the Deep Dream Essential Mattress is a very good value, softer feel mattress in a box option. It does show its price in many ways, but its 20 year warranty is noteworthy.
