The Crown PostureCare Firm is Australian made and forms the firmest version in the Crown Posture Bedding ‘PostureCare’ range.

Purchase and delivery

This mattress can be ordered online through the Forty Winks website. It can also be purchased through any of Forty Winks’ stores across Australia.

Visually, the Crown PostureCare Firm presents with a classic but rather dated style. It uses grey and white colour theme and a brand name label at its base.

Comfort and support

The top comfort layer of this mattress includes a range of different fabrics and foams. These include a Bekaert Deslee Stretch Knit Cover, gel infused memory foam, a high density foam layer, a 3D Aerated Pillow top Spacer, and a wool blend quilt layer.

This comfort layer offers modest pressure relief, and does feel a little hard. The mattress should suit most back sleepers but it may also suit some side sleepers and stomach sleepers. Understandable though, this suitability will vary between individuals. 

We rated the Crown PostureCare Firm as a ‘firm’ feel and an 8 / 10 on the firmness scale. Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.

The support structure used in the Crown PostureCare Firm is a PosturePractic™ 5 Zone Micro Pocketed Coil. This spring system feels sturdy and offers good spinal support. It should also accommodate people of all sizes.

The Crown PostureCare Firm responds well to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness in the optimal zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.

The finer details

In terms of build quality and craftsmanship, the Crown PostureCare Firm is sound. Edge support is good thanks to a strengthened perimeter edge, and side handles should make it easy to transport and rotate the mattress.

Partner disturbance shouldn’t be a problem, but this will depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.

The high density foam layer is certified as non-toxic by GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia). GECA’s testing process is based around human health and environmental impacts.

It’s worth noting here that this mattress is Australian made and has a 10 year warranty.

What bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Crown PostureCare Firm to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Chiropedic Bed Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).

A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.

Furthermore, we do not recommend the Crown PostureCare Firm to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this will also void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.

Final verdict

The Crown PostureCare Firm is well made but its level of comfort may be an issue for some customers. Nevertheless, it is a decent mattress with a reliable spring system.
